The Kings acquired at least one player Thursday who is definitely a point guard. While Tyreke Evans will have to prove to the coaching staff, the fans, his teammates and himself that he can be an NBA point guard, Sergio Rodriguez is there. He earned the moniker "Spanish Chocolate" in his pre-NBA days due to his stylistic relationship with old King Jason Williams. He is a passing point guard, racking up a great number of assists in limited minutes through three seasons in Portland.

Of course, there are problems with Sergio. He's an awful shooter -- 43.5% from two, 30% from three. He commits a bunch of turnovers (more than three per 36 minutes), his defense has always seemed suspect, he might be a lead guard who can only be successful in an up-tempo style, and no one has ever called him a leader.

And those are the on-court problems. Sergio apparently has issues in the locker room, too..................

I don't think Sergio was a cancer or locker-room problem. Sure, he felt he should've gotten more minutes but I think he was able to openly express his concerns to Nate/KP on several occasions but in no way did he divide the locker room.
Oh well... it'll be interesting to view Sergio objectively now as an opponent, and I guess Westphal is one of the few coaches that will allow him a longer leash.
 
Is the next thread on how Jarrett Jack can make it work in Indiana? Or how Zach Randolph can make it work in Clipperville?

He comes into an almost ideal situation. Their incumbent is a crappy PG, their draft pick PG is a combo guard freshman. If he can not make it happen there... well... there will be no-one else to blame.

Good luck to Sergio. Can't wait to see Bayless driving to the rim at will against the Kings.

Please tell me we have a pregame against the kings this upcoming year!? I liked Sergio but god damn he drove me insane sometimes

Jarret Jack works for Indiana just fine - as their backup PG. It was a .400 team that won .480 when he was on the court and sounds like he is more likely to be there instead of TJ Ford for next year (they only won .370 with TJ on the court)...

Jack is what he is - an NBA level backup PG/Combo-guard.

Sergio will be lucky to be that good.
 
Ben, on BlazersEdge has a pretty clear vendetta against Sergio. Did anyone else read his unsubstantiated diatribe about Sergio being a locker room cancer? That's news to me, and was never mentioned in any of J Quick's Behind the Beat articles.

While I agree that I dont think Sergio was a cancer.. I just dont think that if he was, it wouldnt be mentioned in Quicks Behind the Locker room Door articles. Every single player would shut him out, if he said things liek that in the article.

The team's motto last fall was 15=16: a team dynamic of self-sacrifice for the greater good. If there was one player that didn't fully buy into that motto and really embrace it, it was Sergio Rodriguez. He had a fundamental disagreement with the coaching staff about his role and value to a team that ended up being unresolvable. Sergio, in my opinion, has serious concerns about his future in the NBA and acts in whatever way is necessary to give himself the best chance of sticking in the league. And, again in my opinion, he did so, at times, at the expense of team chemistry: his moodiness over playing time got in the way of his quality of play and his meltdown at practice last fall was the team's biggest off-court distraction, minus Darius Miles.

You can tell the toxic nature of the team's relationship with Sergio over the last year not only by his repeated trade demands that were floated through the Spanish media but also by the shockingly miniscule value the team received when trading him away. Sergio is a legit backup point guard making less than 2 million dollars next season. Despite his faults his combination of skills and salary makes him a commodity to some degree. Yet the Blazers were willing to pay a cash-strapped team (who are short at the one, by the way) to take Sergio off their hands for the luxury of moving up just seven spots in the second round in one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. Granted, that move up was a valuable commodity to the Blazers, as it allowed them to draft one of their top targets: Arizona State Power Forward Jeff Pendergraph. But make no mistake: this was a firesale. Almost reminds me of last week's Charter Cable deal.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people who didn't want to read the previous paragraphs and who will nitpick them word by word to mount a defense of Sergio's honor. Fine. I understand that.

Before you do that, know that I truly wish Sergio the best in his future NBA career.

And also know that the Blazers' locker room is a better place without Sergio in it. Period. And read between the lines when KP says "it was time" because it wasn't just time for Sergio, it was time for the team as well.

This is what Ben said in his post draft article. Reads like complete and utter bullshit to me.
 
Ben is pretty subjective when it comes to Sergio because he is so pro-Bayless so until someone like Brian Hendrickson or even Quick can confirm this I would take this with a grain of salt.

Yeah, could be as simple as Sergio refusing to give him an interview. Reporters hold grudges just like anyone else.
