i love/hate this because it is brilliant/stupid

Enough LBJ news already? So he got richer, big surprise?

Opt out after next season for James. A one year contract, if he wants to bolt.

mildly surprising but i think it is designed for him to either

a: opt out to provide flexibility in free agency

b: opt out to up his max if the cap goes up significantly

I didn't read anywhere that James was only taking what is basically a one-year deal. I guess it sets him up for a 5-year max next summer. They need to make a move on a Kevin Love ASAP, don't they?

LBJ isn't leaving Cleveland again so this is so he can get a max 5 year contract or so he can structure his next contract to allow them to go get someone else or pay the players they already have.

actually what just popped into my head is that the new TV deal is set to be done not next year but the year after correct? If thats the case everyone is assuming the cap will go up significantly and that means max contracts will also go up. This would give lebron a chance to get a MASSIVE payday, which he deserves.

Teams can't negotiate/bid based on salary for top-tier players like James since there's a max salary, so these are the types of things that can enter into negotiations or competing bids from teams: player-controlled outs from the contract.

If he can opt out next year that means he's coming to the Blazers!

obviously, signing bonuses, no trade clauses (when applicable), trade kickers, etc

like i said before though, this seems calculated in order to maximize the team, and/ or his salary

Most likely. Using it to switch teams would definitely look bad, especially after his SI essay.

barring gilbert making some donald sterling type comments

He knows we will have cap room

On a serious note, I like that he is basically telling the Cavs to show him they can put people around hi..

Most expensive letter Gilbert ever posted on his team site. 42 mil buys a lot of guilt forgiveness. Fuck LeBron and fuck Cleveland

You're implying that Gilbert had to pay more because of that letter. I'm fairly sure James would have wanted the max either way. Any team in the NBA would be thrilled to pay it to him.

Not at all, I'm being sarcastic and actually dissing every LeBron thread on the Blazer forum. Sort of like seeing Kobe threads here. Not a fan of Cleveland or LeBron. Sure, great player, so's Kobe, so's Melo....but they are all players I'm really am sick of reading about in every sports forum. I think that whole decision and the sequel have been milked dry. The guy dumped his teammates twice. I don't like his style.

Only in the NBA and only with superstars do fans give two shits if a player goes to another team. Its something I don't get, if your a Miami fan then yea you can be upset but for everyone else its just weird how personally people take players that aren't on their team switching teams.
