...good luck with that one!

Freshly retired NBA star Jason Kidd is pursuing the Brooklyn Nets' head coaching job and his candidacy has been discussed within the highest levels of the organization, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

I've heard enough interviews and stories to conclude that Kidd is an on-court basketball genius but generally a moron. Maybe he gets an Assistant Coaching job, but I'll be surprised if any management decides he's a guy they trust close to the reigns

Is he trying his best Mark Jackson impersonation.

I've been hearing about this all day, but no one has brought up his role with the Knicks these past two seasons.

Remember Avery Johnson before he became a head coach? He followed Nelson around as a "player coach" for a year or two being groomed for the role. Did Woodson take Kidd under his wing in a similar role? Even if he did, Johnson also had to do a year of assistant coaching before being handed the reigns of the Mavericks.

I'm torn on this one, because it's a ballsy, unorthodox move on Kidd's part, but he's also one of the best floor generals in league history (if not the best). If it comes out that he's had some experience as a "player coach" in New York, that'd probably sway my opinion more towards hiring the guy. I mean, who better to handle a PG-driven team than one of the league's all-time great PG's, and well, the last time he came to the Nets, they went from the 24th best team in the league to the 4th (aka the year they robbed Jason Kidd of his MVP trophy).

I cut my hair for a job interview. Now I look like everyone else.

I think he only played for the Knicks for one year.

Yeah, just realized that a minute ago... some fan I am...

More importantly though, I still wonder if in his one year, did he have a coach-like role, like Avery Johnson did?

Man, I didn't watch the Knicks at all (except for the two times they played Portland), so I'm not really sure if Kidd was in that role. I can't stand Melo, and I've always hated the Knicks, so there's really no reason for me to watch them.

Re: OT: Kidd formidable candidate to coach Nets (has this ever happened before??)

I don't think that it's happened in the post-player/coach era.

Lenny Wilkens was player/coach for like four years in the late-60's/early-70's and Dave Cowens did it in 1979... presumably players walked into post-playing head coaching gigs back then occasionally.

Bill Russell did the same at the end of his career. The new CBA prevents player-coaches, though.

Avery Johnson went from playing in San Antonio, to an assistant coach in Dallas, to head coaching in roughly a 5 month span.

Scott Skiles too, yeah? Maybe I'm misremembering...

Scott Skiles too, yeah? Maybe I'm misremembering...

I'm old enough to remember Skiles at Michigan State. He got busted for weed, cocaine, and a DUI, and Bobby Knight blasted him in the media, but then paid him a big compliment. It's amazing to me that he turned it around enough to get NBA head coaching gigs. I saw him as the original White Chocolate, vices included.

43. Scott Skiles (Michigan State, 1982-1986): "You know, there is no way I would have Scott Skiles on this team," Bob Knight told his Hoosier roster in 1986. "But Scott Skiles is tougher than every single one of you." Scotty was arrested three times during college (once for weed, once for cocaine possession, and once for a DUI). He was a problem, but mostly for people who tried to guard him and inevitably failed. It almost seemed like he vandalized opponents. His pro career was statistically relevant (he had 30 assists in one night for the Magic, which is still a record), but it's his hard-partying college days that matter more.

This entire article is worth reading, though. Alfredick "The Great" Hughes!

Holy shiet, didn't know that about Skiles.

I think its awesome that they hired Kidd so soon after his retirement. I think he'll be a good coach. He was pretty much a player/coach his entire career.
It'd be crazy if the Nets have injury issues at the PG position and he has to suit up and play. Can a coach do that?

...but does DeRon want to play for him?! Will DeRon approve of his offensive schemes?! That's all that matters, right DeRon?!

Ummmmmm .... what?!?!

Kidd mentions Gerald Wallace as being a point-forward. Continues to emphasize fast-break and pushing the pace. The one specific he's given.

Edit:

Chris Haynes ‏@ChrisBHaynes 35m
So far Jason Kidd is not starting this whole coaching thing on a good note if he thinks Gerald Wallace is going to be his point-forward

Hahahahahahaha - Nets are going to IMPLODE next season. I'm now going on record as having a higher basketball IQ than Kidd.

I really hope for Kidd's sake that quote was taken out of context.

Even if it wasn't, I'd assume he'll realize that's not possible as soon as the team has their first practice.

BTW - Has anyone talked about who he'll bring on to the Nets staff? Is he retaining Mario Elie and Popeye Jones, or is he going in a different direction? I know that he's really good friend with Tracy Murray, who's been trying to break into NBA coaching for a while. Since retiring, Murray's been both a NBDL and WNBA assistant and is currently doing radio for UCLA games while coaching "Ball Up." I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a seat on the Nets' bench next season.

Yeah, but those guys were player-coaches in their 30s. How could you old vets forget Dave DeBusschere, for almost 3 seasons from age 24-26, was player-coach for the Pistons?

Later winning a championship with the Knicks, he was bitter that Pistons management had put him into a position of inevitable failure.

Edit: Actually, he became Head Coach at age 23. The 1st game of the regular season was on his 24th birthday.

I still maintain Tim Duncan deserved MVP that season. The Spurs had a better record in a better conference. Yes, the team improved when he joined but Kittles, Van Horn, and Martin had been injured the year before. All three players rejoined the team that season and they drafted Richard Jefferson and Jason Collins. Kidd wasnt the sole reason they improved. Obviously, the voters agreed with me.

Re: OT: Kidd formidable candidate to coach Nets (has this ever happened before??)

I expected Kidd to retire a couple of years after Payton. For the last few years, Kidd has been a fish out of water. He hung on too long.

Re: OT: Kidd formidable candidate to coach Nets (has this ever happened before??)

Bill Simmons wrote a long Tim Duncan biography. In it, he wrote that Kidd was to be traded to San Antonio, but his wife wouldn't let him because in New Jersey, she was working on her Manhattan acting career, funded by him. Later, he divorced her.

Imagine Kidd and Parker together.
