The Detroit Pistons have just announced the release of Josh Smith. Stunning

Man, the Pistons are a mess, but I did not see that coming.

Would love to tell you I have a list handy of NBA players waived w/$26M (or more) left on their contracts. But you'll have to give us a sec

Safest bet in professional sports right now: Josh Smith will clear waivers in 48 hours and have the right to go elsewhere as a free agent

Countdown to the first post about how the Blazers acquire him.

That's very surprising. I winder what this means for Monroe now.

I don't want okc or dal to grab him. Would make a run at him just to keep him away from other western teams

OKC would implode with him there. I don't see Dallas doing it either, since Dirk is playing so well. Smith is the anti-Dirk

would he work with our team both on the court and in our plans? i don't think so.

Yeah I think the Pistons are courting Monroe. They will use their space to get a real SF this summer

Unless they get some team to pick him up before he clears waivers, Smith's $13.5 M will still be on the books for the next two years. I don't think they'd have enough cap space to sign Monroe and a SF other than a MLE, rookie or Vet's minimum player.

I guess they could stretch Smith's salary out to 2019-20, which would give them some room, but not enough for a major player.

wow.

Coon CBA #65 said:
A team can claim a player on waivers only if one of the following is true:
•The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
•The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 25), and the player is on the last season of his contract.
•The team has a trade exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 85).
•The player has a minimum salary contract.
I don't know that any team has a 13.5M DPE, and Smith isn't on a min deal, so only a TPE (or straight cap space) can claim him. No team has a TPE that high (BOS just got one for Rondo, and HOU has an 8.4M one), and TPEs can't be combined with other exceptions or salaries. So which teams have cap room? PHI is the only one with 13.5M, so they could claim him in the next 48 hours. Then, Smith is a free agent.

Edit: No DPEs that big, either.

Houston has a 14 mil TE

Smith actually can make more cash by signing a veteran's minimum contract.

I think that the Sixers are the only team that has enough cap room to absorb Smith's contract, and I can't see them using it on him.

Damn, I bet he signs with a contender in the west on the cheap and makes them that much better... :sigh:

Isn't Josh Smith and D12 best friends? I think they make a big push to get him

They are tanking! :). I think they have first crack at him since they have one of the worst records

The guys love the city of Houston.... And I think he played AAU ball with Howard. He'll end up a Rocket!

Well, if applying the one-chucklehead rule, is Smith not better than Claver? Or Leonard? Or Robinson? Or Crabbe?

Rockets weighing their options:

Rockets, I'm told, are in fact-finding mode and weighing whether to make a Josh Smith run. Too early to say if they're in or out
