They are also the worst team in the NBA when it comes to turnovers, thus they are 25th in the NBA at FGA by the other team. So they avg 83 FGA against per game vs Portland that only gives the opponent an avg of 74 shots a game. That is a lot of extra boards. Now in addition to that they also send the most players to the line in the NBA at 29.7 per game, but you cut that number in half basically do to the double bonus. Still that is around an extra 15 rebound chances per game right there. So overall Minny gets about 25 more rebound opportunities on the defensive side of the ball alone, and probably a few more on the offensive side because they also average more shots per game than Portland.
The facts point to K Love getting a lot of chances to get boards, a lot more than LMA anyway.
There are stats that take all of that into account: ORB%, DRB% and TRB%
Right now, Marcus Camby and Kevin Love are battling it out to see who will have the highest TRB% of anyone not named Dennis Rodman in the 40 seasons since they started tracking this stat. Love had been leading all season and was over 25% until very recently. His TRB% has dipped a bit over the least two weeks down to 23.57% and Camby's has risen to a new season (and career) high of 24.11%. At the rate Camby is going, due to his limited minutes and occasional missed game due to nagging injuries, he will barely have enough total rebounds (800) to qualify for the league lead. If he misses a few more games, he won't have enough total rebounds to qualify.
Camby is an interesting case. He led the league in TRB% last season at 22.2% - his previous career high. This is now his 15th season in the NBA, and while he's always had a pretty high TRB% (topped 20% on multiple occasions), he's only had enough total rebounds to qualify for the league lead three times (at the age of 32, 33 and 35).
I hate to pick at this scab, but at the time Greg Oden fractured his patella, he was leading the league in ORB% (15.6%) and TRB% (21.9%). He was also leading the league in FG% (0.605), TS% (0.647) and BLK% (7.7%). Not too shabby for a foul prone, out of shape, inexperienced 22-year old. God, it's almost sickening how good that guy could be if he could ever get, and stay, healthy.
In any case, right now, both are beasting it on the boards, regardless of the pace and style their teams play. When there are 10 players on the court and you get almost 25% of all available rebounds, you're doing a great job on the boards. As I mentioned, the only player to ever top TRB% = 25 in the last 40 years was Dennis Rodman - and he did it six times.
Considering all the great rebounders the league has seen over the last 40 years, being among the top ever in TRB%, for both Camby and Love, is very impressive.
