New York Knicks president and general manager Steve Mills met with Phil Jackson recently regarding the possibility of Jackson becoming the team's next coach, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

The sources said Jackson, 68, told the Knicks he was not interested in the position.

The New York Daily News, meanwhile, reported Friday the Knicks have offered Jackson a front office position and that he is expected to deliver his decision sometime next week.

The report, citing a league source, said Knicks owner James Dolan met with Jackson about potentially returning to the team he helped win two championships as a player.

The Knicks, who snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota on Wednesday, continue to struggle under coach Mike Woodson. They are 18 games under .500 and 5½ games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jackson, who has a career record of 1,155-485 in 20 seasons with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, has won 11 NBA championships.

"I really don't have an opinion on it," Woodson said before the team's game Friday against the Utah Jazz. "I really don't. Again, as I sit here today, I am the coach of the New York Knicks. I am not going to entertain anything about Phil.

"I have a great deal of respect for Phil, but I am not going to entertain anything about Phil Jackson. My job is to try to get this team to play at a high level and we got a big game tonight against Utah and we got to get ready to play."

He won 11 championships in 20 seasons and he did rebuild with the Lakers. Shaq/Kobe three peat and then later the Kobe/Gasol lineup.

How many championships did Doug Collins win? He coached Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

He will become the Knicks coach. The Knicks will get the #1 pick and they will draft Joel Embiid. Meanwhile the Blazers don't even have a draft pick in what will be the strongest draft since the 1984 draft.

I kind of think he lands in Seattle in a similar role Larry has in Indy when they get another team
 
James Dolan has reportedly solicited the help of Bill Bradley in negotiations with Phil Jackson and the two sides could sign a deal that earns Jackson in excess of $15 million per year, according to a source.

Jackson also has had preliminary discussions with the Knicks about owning a minority stake in the team.

Bradley won a championship with Jackson on the 1973 Knicks and is a former U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate.

If Jackson joins the Knicks, Steve Mills will remain in the front office.

Jackson has been seeking a deal similar to the one Jerry West has with the Golden State Warriors in which he is an advisor. West takes approximately two trips from his home in the Los Angeles area to Oakland.

Jackson has little interest in relocating to New York on a full time basis and running the day-to-day operations of the club. Jackson's plan could include him hiring a general manager while serving as final decision maker along with Dolan.

Steve Kerr has been mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate under Jackson.

Dolan believes Jackson is worth making the face of the Knicks' franchise.

Doug Collins should stick with being a color commentator. He is the best at it.
 
Had to chime in on this.

I keep on hearing that the Dolan, Jackson marriage is doomed to fail. I can not believe Phil would have accepted the position if he was doomed fail. Phil is a very smart man. I know a lot people don't give him the credit for winning the championships he won. Bottom line, I think he deserves the credit for those titles. And I don't believe for one moment he would have accepted the position if he wasn't given the autonomy.

I think this was a great hire for New York if Jackson is willing to put the work needed to fix the problems this franchise has.

It's free money. Nothing that happens will tarnish his legacy. Phil can stay in Montana and cash paychecks, make the occasional phone call to a free agent and he's done his job.

I think he'll be more active than that. He has an ego to serve.

To the comment above about Felton. He won't be there very long.

Phil doesn't strike me as a person caring too much about his legacy.

Taking the job with the Knicks is all about the $$$. That franchise is screwed for the next few seasons.

Well the only I can say to that is if he wasn't worried about his legacy, why didn't take on lesser talented rosters? He knew what he was doing and walking into when he took over the rosters he took over.

He may not be worried about it now as Pres. But I think he did think about it when he was coaching.
 
Phil is probably a double agent for the Lakers, his girlfriend IS working in their front office!

I don't think he's worried about his legacy now. He's a hall of famer coach with several rings. His legacy is cemented next to Red Auerbach!
 
The Knicks are due. The NBA has too big of a vested interest for them not to get over soon. And when they finally win, Phil will get credit for it.
 
Wouldn't that be wild if Lebron, Carmello and Kobe all ended up on the Knicks? That would really draw some conspiracy theories.
