2nd ASG in Staples before Portland even gets one. Lame.

Stern said he didn't hesitate in awarding the event just seven years after it was held in the same city.

"We're likely to shorten the rotation a bit because it's getting more difficult to find cities with the kinds of amenities, close hotel accommodations, the convention center and the like, and LA has been a popular destination," he said.

The commissioner said Orlando and its yet unfinished new arena is a candidate to again host All-Star weekend "in the very near future."

Which is why I'm all for that new hotel in the Rose Quarter that Sam Adams got so much crap from the county for looking into. Obviously it doesn't make sense just to build a hotel to attract an All-Star game, but it would help our case for getting the game.

LA is a world class city. It's hard to begrudge the NBA for putting the all-star game there IMO.

Chicago hasn't had the Allstar game since Michael Jordan stole the show at Chicago Stadium. And Stern can't really shovel that amenities crap.

So they go to LA twice in 7 years, and have a city that doesn't even have an NBA team host the damn thing, and we still don't get to sniff it.

I understand market size, and all that crap, but this is ridiculous. I could understand maybe returning to LA 10 years after they hosted it, but 7 years? Before they even have ever come to a team that has been in the god damn league for (at that point) over 40 years?

LA is not a world class city. totally overrated!

You're right. It's only the 47th largest city proper population in the world and 13th largest urban area population and metro area population in the world.

Hollywood. Disneyland.

Overrated, indeed.

Disneyland is especially overrated because Disney World is ten times better, and in a much better city (Orlando), which also has the NBA Restaurant on City Walk.

Weather has a lot to do with it, too. The NBA wants AS weekend to be a big money maker, and Portland in the middle of February isn't a very attractive destination for people no matter what is going on there.

in 2004. they set up a tent in a fucking parking lot and that was about it. i went to the All Star Saturday night activities and leaving the place it was a ghetto-fest downtown.

Orlando is not a much better city. It has a ton of theme parks, but it has little in the way of other things, like world-class restaurants, stores, theaters, etc. And the weather is better in LA. LA has dry warmth/heat, while Orlando is humid.

As for Disneyworld versus Disneyland, Disneyworld has Epcot Center, which is great for some, boring for others. But in terms of the actual amusement parks, Disneyworld actually has LESS rides, as it's missing the Matterhorn.

So it's overrated because there's another, better place? That doesn't follow. It's like saying that Sears Tower is overrated because it's not the tallest building in the world.

Visitors from across the country and around the world flock to both Disneyland and Disney World.

Disneyland is just one element of a massively rich tapestry that makes LA so relevant internationally.

The ASG will never be hosted in Portland for exactly the same reason that Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, et al. will never host the game -- they are all small markets with terrible weather in the middle of February.

I would have used "portland is a shit hole", but your post works just fine.

I wish Toronto would get one, but the weather is such a killer.

If they'd at least say that, I wouldn't be that upset.

Cept for one minor detail.

Utah, Minnesota and Milwaukee have all hosted the ASG.

As has Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle (twice) and Indianapolis. Sure, some of those were a while ago, but the main point here is...were.

and number one in titty bars and porn shops per capita too ... don't worry, if I get depressed I'll just go get some boobs in my face.

oh fuck off, Stern. Cut the crap and just host it in LA every year, it's obvious that the ASG is only about money and not the fans.

LA, Orlando, San Antonio, Phoenix, and New Orleans should rotate.

Yes, I am pissed off that the All-Star Game has never been held in Portland, and have ranted on that fact many times. However, the All-Star Game used to be a fan-friendly event that was meant to award franchises and their fans for their loyalty and business to the NBA. It ceased to be that about 15 years ago, now it's just a corporate showcase for the NBA to kiss the ass of their sponsors. The Vegas ASG was really the nail in the coffin of a once-fun weekend. Now I don't give two shits if the NBA brings the ASG to the Rose Garden, it's not like you or I could get tickets (face value, anyway) to the damn thing.

Agreed on all fronts except Dallas instead of San Antonio. And I'm not quite as angry as all of this as you seem to be. hehe

The NFL has held the Pro Bowl in Hawaii every year, and I don't think that fans have any sort of issue with that in football. (Although maybe now that they're experimenting with it, holding it in Miami in 2010 before the Super Bowl, people will start to have different expectations...)

The NBA has seemingly changed the rules of the game in terms of AS location selection, so it's probably wise to just accept (as you are, in an angry way :) ) it and not worry abou tit.

People still watch the all star game?

Not really, this year I only watched Rudy. Still, if it were in Portland, I'm sure there would be events to go to, people to meet, things to do, even if the actual game was too expensive for most people. It's one of those things that I pretend I don't really care about, but I'll secretly admit that it'd be pretty cool to see in Portland.

you include San Antonio and New Orleans but not New York and Miami?
