Rumor is that a few people within the Nugget organization told Jackson that Karl was instructing players to try and injure Steph Curry by targeting his ankle.

DENVER -- For Thursday night's Game 6 between the Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets, both the scene and the tone will shift.

Following Denver's series-saving Game 5 win, Warriors coach Mark Jackson accused the Nuggets of dirty play and attempting to take cheap shots at Golden State star Stephen Curry.

They tried to send hit men at Steph [Curry].

-- Mark Jackson, Warriors coach
"They tried to send hit men at Steph," Jackson said in his postgame news conference following the Warriors' 107-100 loss Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center.

"There were some dirty plays early," Jackson said. "It's playoff basketball. It's all right. Make no mistake, we were up 3-1 [in the series] playing hard, clean physical basketball, not trying to hurt anybody."

Curry concurred with his coach.

"There were a couple of plays I was cutting down the lane and I'm not really involved in the play, and somehow I get an elbow to my chest," Curry said.

Jackson took umbrage with one particular play involving Curry.

"[The Nuggets took] a shot at his ankle, clearly," Jackson said. "That can't be debated."

Curry has a history of ankle injuries and is playing through a sprained left ankle suffered in Game 2 of the first-round series.

The focus of Jackson's ire seemed to be directed at Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried.

Jackson noted that Faried set some "great screens and some great illegal ones, too."

"He did his job. Hey, I played with guys like that. They get paid to do that. Dale Davis, Anthony Davis, Charles Oakley. You get paid to do it. So give them credit," Jackson said. "As an opposing coach, I see it, and I'm trying to protect my guys."

When told that Jackson thought the Nuggets were trying to hurt Curry, Faried had a stunned look on his face.

"That's intriguing because I think they were purposefully trying to hurt me every play I went for a rebound -- the hits, the grab to the throat, just the negative stuff you usually don't see in the regular season that's not getting called in the playoffs," Faried said.

While Jackson lobbed accusations at the Nuggets, he also said that he knew some Denver players were not on board with the team's tactics.

I think [the Warriors] kind of brought the physicality to the series. And we stopped being the receivers and we're starting to hit back a little bit. But as far as anybody trying to cheap shot, I don't condone that myself. It's not my game.

-- Andre Iguodala, Nuggets guard
"I got inside information that some people don't like that brand of basketball and they clearly didn't co-sign it," Jackson said. "They wanted to let me know they have no parts in what was taking place. Let the best team win. And let everybody, with the exception of going down with a freak injury, let everybody leave out of here healthy. That's not good basketball."

Denver's Andre Iguodala stood up for his team.

"I think I've taken the hardest hit in the series, Game 1 or 2, when [Andrew] Bogut leaned in to me on a screen. And I didn't remember what happened the rest of the game," Iguodala said. "I think they kind of brought the physicality to the series. And we stopped being the receivers and we're starting to hit back a little bit. But as far as anybody trying to cheap shot, I don't condone that myself. It's not my game."

The physical play was not all one-sided however. Warriors big men Bogut and Draymond Green were both assessed flagrant fouls in the game while Curry and Nuggets center Kosta Koufos received technicals.

Denver coach George Karl spoke to the media ahead of Jackson but took a shot at Golden State's version of bully ball by asking, "Did Draymond Green play football or basketball at Michigan State?"

The Warriors lead the suddenly contentious series 3-2 with Game 6 back at home at Oracle Arena on Thursday night.

I haven't watched any Playoff games, if anyone can find video I'd be curious to see. The highlights don't show anything.

Maybe Jackson forgot the series vs the bulls when the pacers cheap shot Pippen and Jordan. Man the league are filled with softies now!

How is elbowing a dude in the chest "targeting his ankle?"

46 seconds in, a clear and deliberate trip by Faried on Curry. It's a cheap shot, but the refs did catch it.

I don't see it at all except where Curry appears to deliberately kick Faried's toe which is planted.

Man.... this is just old school dirty playoff basketball. This used to be common.

You know who used to bitch like this back in the early 90's? Yep the Phoenix Suns. I remember them being all butt hurt when Utah were physical with them. Bitching and whining that Utah played all dirty and shit. I laughed and said "Play fucking softball then bitches!!!!"

If Jackson's bitching gets the favorable whistles at home in game 6 . . . it was well played bitching.

Yeah, I highly doubt that was a deliberate trip.

This news single-handedly makes me not a fan of this Warriors team. When the coach and best player are pussies, no thanks.

The soft teams will always bitch about the physical teams.

That's why I was such a big fan of Gerald Wallace in Portland. That dude would be bumped all over the place. He sacrificed his body for his team. He was a man! I wish we had more of the Pryzbilla and Wallace types on our team.

Wallace joined the team a couple years too late. If we'd had Wallace in 08-09, I think we would have beaten the Rockets. They were playing a tough brand of basketball, and Wallace would have eaten that up.

Yeah, so much for living up to the "warrior" name. More like wussies.

You don't sprain your ankle by getting tripped. Mark Jackson needs to stop being a pussy.

Jackson is protecting his star player, just like every other coach worth a shit would do.

What you do is make Draymond Green or Bogut put Lawson on his ass when he takes it in the paint. It will send a clear message. You don't whine that they're dirty to the media, it just makes the Warriors look even more soft. Future teams will continue to do the same thing. Its playoff basketball. Mark Jackson played for the Pat Riley Knick's, he should know this.

The Pacers weren't saints either. The Davis boys were thuggish ruggish as well.

Bogut and Green both got flagrants fouls on Faried, who seems to be the main perpetrator. They're attacking Steph, we're retaliating by letting our enforcers go after their enforcer. And IMO the one flagrant on Draymond was bullshit. The trouble with fouling Lawson is that if hes going 100 mph to the basket and you lay his ass out then you're really risking getting tossed or suspended. Everyone knows you're retaliating and were intentionally malicious. Its easier to take shots at Curry when hes weaving through traffic on screen plays constantly and hes got the gimpy ankle as a target.

This series hasn't been over the top physicality-wise. I do think the Nuggets have set a few really suspect screens where they'll stick their legs out really fucking far and not even try to body Steph because they're going after the ankle. One in particular by McGee on the near baseline stands out. The refs called a foul because Curry tripped on his leg, but I think they really do want to fuck his ankle up. In the context of winning a playoff series its a big time grey area but you're also talking about Curry's entire career here. His ankles are vulnerable enough as is and these guys are going out of their way to further damage them? Is it ok to go after Rose's knee when he comes back?

Jackson is protecting his star player, just like every other coach worth a shit would do.

This. Hes just politicking. Karl has been bitching and moaning plenty, he just does it less dramatically. Coaches will go out of their way to bring shit like this up to protect their guys and make sure the refs will be on the lookout for certain violations. Its protecting your players, its giving your team an edge and taking away something the other team is trying to do. To not do this would be fucking moronic.

But yeah, hes being extremely dramatic, and hes completely full of shit with his "Nuggets sources".

And FWIW I actually respect Curry for showing some balls when the Nuggets take their shots. He went right up to Faried after their tangle up and who knows what he said, but he definitely wasn't backing down. Same with Koufos later on. Obviously no ones going to get into a fight in that situation but neither Faried or Koufos even squared up to him and said anything back.

I really just don't see any reason to think they are targeting his ankle.

Valiant effort to defend Jackson's comments, though.

Read the original post. He admitted Dale and Antonio Davis did that stuff. Jackson's saying the right things. As a coach, he's protecting his player.

I agree. The whining about Jackson working the refs and the media is worse than Jackson working the refs and the media. All good coaches do it when the playoffs are on the line. Wish Nate had.

How is bringing it up to the media, "protecting" the player, exactly?

Refs hear about it, players hear about it, coach hears about it, and especially Stern hears about it. Stern definitely doesn't want another star player hurt. He'll tell the refs to look for it.

Because it makes people talk about it, and since the Warriors next game is at home, I'm sure their fans now know about it.

I assume you were just asking a rhetorical question, though, because every coach worth a shit does this in the playoffs. Especially since Faried clearly tripped Curry intentionally on at least one play, and was called for the foul.

Phil Jackson was notorious for bitching to the media to get favorable calls from the refs.
