Heard the news this morning... damn.

I know a few of the posters on here will hate 'Sheed till the day he dies, but personally, I always thought he was cool in my book.

We'll miss you, 'Sheed. Here's to the next 50 years of smoking blunts in your black Bronco.

Quitter!

j/k. The guy was more polarizing than most politicians. Like the man said, "Fifty percent of the fans love me, 50 percent hate me."

I was in the former group, at least until the last few seasons.

If not for that lousy fourth quarter in 2000, we'd probably be retiring his jersey next year.

Alas. Kind of like when Rodman or Barkley retired, the NBA just got a little less interesting.

I loved Sheed. Wish him well.. glad he won a championship!

Sheed always played on his own terms. I thought he showed a lack of respect for the talent he was given, but there's no question that he was among the most remarkable players this game has ever seen, regardless of his statistics. He had the court vision and passing ability of a point guard, the low post footwork of a center, he could face you up, back you down, go under you, go by you or go over the top of you. And when he wanted to do so, he could shut down any big man in the league.

Sheed didn't care for the NBA, and the NBA didn't care for Sheed. Can't say I'll miss seeing him much, although I am dissapointed I didn't get one last chance to boo him this year....

+1

Wasn't he playing these playoffs injured? If so, what was the nature of the injury?

If you're going to mention the "Both Teams Played Hard", then don't forget "CTC"

In that infamous 4th quarter, Sheed was the only one who hit anything...

I agree he played and lived on his terms. Sometimes I loved him, sometimes I was ready to wring his neck. He could have been a hall of famer if he had wished to maximize his talent but I truly don't think honors are what he ever sought. He wanted a title and won one.

I like his attitude towards his wife and family, and that he never got in serious off court trouble (smoking pot does not qualify IMHO). His teammates generally had positive things to say about him and they are the ones who would know him best, outside of family.

Go with God, Sheed.

Sheed was one of my all-time favorite Blazers, though I could see how some people would hate him. He had the skills to guard KG, Duncan and even Shaq, and he could shoot the 3 ball and post up with the best of them. His skillset was unbelieveable.. could've been one of the all-time greats if he had that desire to but I don't think he cared about that stuff.

This of course is the major rub against Sheed for most of us. I could care less about his desire to lead a team, if it would have been a different team. The Blazers surrounded him with so much talent and he had the ability to lead our guys to a championship or two, but he just chose not to show that will. As much as I loathe him, he was a tremendous "team" player, I just wish he could have cared enough to show us the total package"

I imagine that he has enough money put away so that he won't have to worry about who's going to CTC.

One of the problems with Sheed was the same problem we had with Stoudamire, but to a much lesser degree. Both guys were paid like they were franchise players. If they'd each been signed to contracts that were equal to their production, we'd have had the flexibility to trade them for more useful assets, or reconfigure the team better around them.

Fuck Sheed. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out douche bag. Hopefully you have saved well because you offer nothing to humanity other than an underachieving basketball game.

Got a link?

Nothing on ESPN.

This was posted today:
Will Spurs Target Wallace?
Rasheed Wallace | Pistons

San Antonio will not have cap space until 2010 (when Manu Ginobili's contract expires), but there will be plenty of talented free agents who may accept the mid-level exception this summer.

Expect the Spurs to make a run at Rasheed Wallace, the longtime starting power forward for the Pistons. -- The New York Times

Sources say Pistons forward/center Rasheed Wallace asked for a buyout this year, but management declined.
Some observers think the possible buyout would have been to join the Cavs. He's an unrestricted free agent this summer and could be someone the Cavs covet -- at the right price. -- The News-Herald

I thought Wallace retired a long time ago. He sure played like it.

I don't think you'll get any argument against that. We all wished he could've led us to a title, but he just did not have that killer mentality to be a No. 1 guy. It's a shame we didn't get to see what he could have become, but that, however, doesn't make me hate the guy.
But I could see how he turned off a lot of fans.

Man, there is so much vitriol for him here. I always liked him and rooted for him in Detroit.

I liked Sheed and defended him. I guess you can't ask a guy to be something he is not. He never had the scorer's mentality. He had a great career and a championship to show for it. I'm sure he'll enjoy his retirement.

One of my favorite NBA players. He cracks me up. It was hilarious when he got in the 76ers huddle in the playoffs last year.

I hope he goes into boadcasting

My only problem with Sheed was how much money he made versus how he produced. If Portland was paying him "The Man" money, then I kind of expected him to actually try and be The Man. Unfortunately that wasn't in his nature much to my frustration. Otherwise he was fine.

Hopefully he is able to find something in life he cares about more then he did his NBA career.

I wonder how many people who have complained about Sheed not living up to his potential have themselves lived up to their own personal potential.

I know I could be a far better artist, writer, designer and database developer if I just gave a damn. Like Sheed, I'm better than 80% of the professionals out there at some of the things I do, but in my heart I know I could probably be in the top 5% if I just tried.

There's a lot of "pretty good, but not earth-shattering" out there in the world. Me and Sheed are just doing our little parts to contribute to it. It's not about potential, but about what makes us happy.

Sheed just figured out how to make a lot more money doing it (while also winning an NBA championship).

Shame. Wallace was a really good player and an interesting character. I really liked him as both a Blazer and Piston, and I'm glad he was a key part of a championship team.

I don't buy the "He could have been a Tim Duncan/Kevin Garnett if he wanted to, but he didn't try." Those are two of the greatest big men in the history of the game, Wallace simply wasn't as talented as they were. It's like saying Roy could be Michael Jordan if he really wanted to, he just doesn't try hard enough. We have two variables that none of us know: a player's "true talent level" and a player's desire. Depending on how you want to portray a player, you can set those variables appropriately to make them seem like an overachiever, underachiever or just right.

Wallace was truly gifted defensively and showed it. His offensive talent level was not amazing. It was good...he had shooting ability, but not like Nowitzki. He had some inside game, but not like Duncan. He didn't do everything at a high level like Garnett. He had several good tools on offense, no great ones, and it added up to a dangerous but not all-time great offensive player. Combined with his defensive greatness, I'd say he's just under Hall of Fame caliber, and that's not a disappointment for his talent level.

I hope Wallace ends up as a sports media personality or coach at some point.

I continue to be amazed by people who claim to be both Blazers and Rasheed Wallace fans. That man more than anyone symbolizes the underachievement of the 2000 and 2001 squads, and had a large hand in the downfall of our franchise and the alienation of the fan base.

Screw you Rasheed - both teams might have played hard, but you rarely did - nice disappearing act in the playoffs AGAIN this year. At least Uncle Cliffy tried.

Well said. Props to you.

The exact reason why I was praying that the C's wouldn't sign him this summer.
