Hollinger's take:

Lost in all the hubbub is Rubio's secret strength -- the highlight-reel passes are nice and all, but his elite defense is the true difference-maker for this team. Rubio ranked fourth among point guards in steals per minute and excelled at drawing charges; between his unusual length for a point guard and his quick feet, he was immediately among the best defenders in the league. Thanks to his efforts, the Wolves gave up 7.3 points per 100 possessions less with him on the court.

You can argue whether he is elite, but saying he's close to Sergio on defense is just foolish.

Hollinger also said the Lillard was the most overrated prospect in the last draft.

Rubio is not a great defender. At best, he's average. More surprising is that Sergio has a better Ortg than Rubio (101 to 97). I thought Rubio was supposed to be the next Pistol Pete?

IIRC, Hollinger (if it wasn't him, it was another big-wig prospect analyst at ESPN) had stats/projections showing Batum would also be a huge bust. I'd probably say that was inaccurate. Just maybe.

Hollinger provides some fun analysis at times, but he's like rest rest of us: right as much as he is wrong.

I don't think Hollinger has ever tried to compare Rubio and Rondo, though. That would be a career killer. I mean, career stats are fun to look at, but nothing about Rubio's game says "Rondo" to me. But, that horse is already dead...

Having doubts about James Harden being a franchise player who can lead a team to an NBA title, in a thread about Ricky Rubio being a guy with a 7 PER, is not the same thing at all and is totally disingenuous.

What a hilarious straw man.

It was a stupid comparison, and I have to laugh at those trying to justify it. Rubio in the "Rondo mold" is just a dumb thought. Can Rubio become a decent NBA player? Maybe. Does he have Rajon Rondo's skillset? Not even fucking close.

Just stop.

Was Sergio in the "Rondo mold"?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Oh I never said he did (not that you were saying I said he did). I can't imagine anyone making that comparison.

Wow that is terrible mags. Olshey already has a better drafting record with lillard

When? And who?

lets see...

Sebastian Telfair instead of Al Jefferson..

Martell Webster instead of Chris Paul OR Deron Williams...

Nolan Smith instead of anyone else

When? And who?

Basically the entire John Nash era. But, as bad as Nash was, he was still not as bad as David Kahn. It totally cracks me up that after drafting Rubio and Flynn at 5 and 6, he took Ty Lawson at 18 and traded him to Denver. He had his PG of the Future, at least a decent one, and pissed him away in favor of Flynn and Bricky. I know I posted it earlier in this thread, but it bears repeating. That 2009 draft was perhaps the most PG rich draft in NBA history, certainly within recent memory. Kahn had TWO high lottery picks and used them both on PGs. One of those lottery picks is no longer even in the league and the other is the third best PG on a last place team. Here's the list of PGs Kahn passed on in that draft:

Stephen Curry
Brandon Jennings
Jrue Holiday
Ty Lawson
Jeff Teague
Eic Maynor
Darren Collison

Nash was incompetent. Kahn is insane.

i think the point is that minny had #5, #6, #4, and #2, in 3 years with nothing to show for it, telfair was #13ish? nolan was 21...if anything the oden and roy picks set the blazers back because they were so high

You think with dumb luck alone you'd be able to land at least one franchise player with four to 6 picks.

Roy didn't set us back initially. In fact, he totally turned the franchise around - until the injuries took their toll. Yes, the Oden pick hurts because how good Durant is. But still, back when we were in the high lottery, we did alright. Hell, in 2006 we started the day with the 4th pick and ended up with the to best players in the entire draft. Kahn had 4 top 6 picks in 3 years and didn't even land a single starter on his last place team. Ouch!

Picking on the Rubes is good fun. But I wouldn't mind Bricky coming off our bench with E-Will, Babbitt, Hickson, and Leonard. Next year.

1 of 4 shooting and 2 rebounds in a loss today. He's the next Rondo!

You neglected to mention the 6 assists, 2 steals, and 2 TO's. 25 minutes played. His +/e was -14, second worst on the team (to D. Williams' -16, but Williams did play 12 more minutes, so, considering minutes played, Rubio's +/- was the worst).

Bricky Rubio looks like John Crotty right now, uh, in terms of mobility. His game is identical to Sergio.

Decent game for Rubio tonight: he made two shots, 5 points in a loss

Go back to page 9 or 10 - it's discussed there. It's discussed a few times, really.

Ricky is frustrated and now pissed at Porter. Which can only mean one thing . . . . . . . . Porter is gone.
