The nets signed Jason Collins and went 9-3 in their next 12 games. Attendance is up and jersey sales through the roof. The media circus lasted a few games and was not a distraction. None of the horrible awful things that would supposedly happen if a gay male played pro sports happened (just like no horrible things happened when gays and lesbians served in the military, or got married).

In the end, teams want to 1) win 2) make money. The two often, but not always, go together. The Nets came out ahead on both counts.

End of controversy.

There were horrible awful things that were supposed to happen? I did not know that.

See why even bring this up? It's not an issue.

Is it bad that I snickered when I saw bottom and Jason Collins in the same post?

Its kind of like when the Eagles signed Michael Vick. All in the name of winning and making money.

He's been pretty well behaved and did decently for a while on that team. People thought the world would end or something would collapse when the dog killer was let back to regain his former glory. The media circus didn't last long and people embraced him again.

Signing Michael Vick was not a bad move for Philadelphia. It will probably a net positive move for the Jets. Its a story of redemption and perseverance.

What controversy?

For goodness sake, if this thread isn't the biggest example of collinearity I've seen in a while, I don't know what is.

Is this where we white homosexually challenged men are supposed to apologize? Apparently we need to for most everything, so I want to be sure I don't miss it.

Homosexual males have been playing sports since the ball was invented, so what did you expect? Fireworks and Rockets maybe?

That was my point in the beginning. The Nets were going to use Collins as much as Collins used them. Each got great publicity, which was obvious from the beginning.

Collins is probably the worst player in the NBA at this point on a playoff team who gets minutes, and the stats will show it. The NBA was able to beat the NFL for the "first gay athlete" jersey sales, though. Sam will still get a bunch of merchandise sold in the NFL, simply because the NFL is so much more popular than the NBA, but the novelty has already worn off, and the NBA/Collins exploited the situation for mutual advantage.

I think it's fantastic, because that is how money and great products are made. Jason Collins is actually a textbook example of capitalism. Find a market niche, get some venture money, and both sides win when the product explodes.

Crandc’s wishful thinking is premature. There is plenty of time for Jason Collins to cause the end of the world as we know it and return Satan to his throne.

Prokharov ran against Putin 2 years ago and got 8% of the vote. Let’s say that next election, he’s a bigger threat. So Putin makes Jason Collins the leading issue. Putin has to look tough to the voters. So he starts wars he knows he can win, like against Monaco, Andorra, the Vatican, and Liechtenstein. So all of Europe goes to war against Russia and China under the Pope’s leadership. Pretty soon the nuclear countries destroy each other except North Korea, which rules the world because no one wants to go fight in the snow.

They went 9-3 because they thought the coach would ease up and let them have a practice or two off. That means less getting eye groped by their worst player.

It was all a trick to motivate them.

Or maybe it was WHO GIVES A SHIT?

Or maybe this^^^^^^

I knew this thread was going to have something to do with gay people.

What do I win?

0.6 PPG
0.3 RPG
33 fg%
0.3 PER

Gay or not it doesn't matter -- it's truly insulting that he's in the NBA.

Yep, why is this guy getting any publicity? He's awful and should be in some D league team.

The NBA cares only about money.

Collins sells jerseys.

Jersey sales = money

NBA fucking LOVES Jason Collins.

Oh joy!!! Well he's one of the worst money making nba players to ever play the game.

The "bottom line" is that he is an extremely good return on the investment. They pay him very little and they make boatloads of cash off him. He should have asked for more money.

It's really no different than the Hornets giving this guy a contract.

I'm glad he's in the league, and set the 1st-gay-player record. I doubt he'll be in the league next year. But then I was wrong when I said Royce White will never appear in a regular season game.
