Totally stupid move. Selling Thunder gear in a 1 1/2 major sport town where the main draws division rival is the Thunder is insanely stupid.
Literally the dumbest marketing move I have witnessed in a while
As long as they left Steel Heads alone. I want that for the NHL team that will eventually come to Portland
You guys do know there's at least some history, here, right?
Portland had a franchise known as the Portland Thunder (they were the Portland Storm first) in the World Football League in the 1970's.
I don't love the name, but it's not terrible, especially when factoring in historical consideration.
wikipedia said:The Portland Thunder took the Storm's place in 1975 and lasted until the entire WFL folded halfway through their second season. The Thunder's office in downtown closed in October 1975.[1]
Was Rain just too obvious of a name to use lol
Oh yes the rich history of a minor league team that only played ONE year in 1975
The "Growlers" name was great, it means something to Portland specifically and has a dual meaning.

I think they left off the last part of the name.
Joking aside, horrible name. I am guessing this gets fixed quick or AFL will be again short lived in Portland.
Yeah, I thought of that Portland team when the Thunder became the Thunder. They should have just gone with the Portland Storm instead. You guys do know there's at least some history, here, right?

Just as Oklahoma Thunder are more appropriately named than Portland Thunder, Portland Timberwolves makes more since than Minnesota Timberwolves. (Let's not start the Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, etc talk -- been there.)At least they aren't the Portland Timberwolves . . . which could be more appropriate than Thunder for the NW area.
LOL. Portland SuperSonics. I love it.Growlers would have been a great name. I don't hate Thunder, but Sonics would have been more amusing.
barfo
I remember when the Timbers MGMT caved to demand to alter the new logo, maybe the Portland AFL MGMT will take a tip from that playbook and change the name.
