How many here are looking forward to Portland Timbers FC being promoted to the MLS?

I am curious since it would be our 2nd pro team and since on the 8th I watched Liverpool FC destroy West Brom Albion 3-0 and that Portland is Called Soccer City USA!

plus what would you name our future (yeah i know i know) NFL, MLB and NHL teams?

Oregon Orcas (MLB)
Portland Pioneers (NHL)
Oregon Loggers (NFL)

i am not so sure about the loggers maybe Oregon Ocras would be better for the NFL team...i dont know.

I would LOVE to have my Timbers in the MSL!

I like soccer. I watched more soccer during the olympics than anything else. I'd go.

I am old enough to remember when the Timbers were in the NASL. The days of the Timbers/Sounders/Whitecaps rivalry were awesome.

they lived in the USL as well HERE IS TO THE TIMBER GETTING PROMOTED!!!!!

HCP? your TIMBERS? hmmmm :P your dad work in washington? :P

as for the other part of the question you did guys didnt answer!

I hope they get promoted and i also hope there is never a mens sports team called the Orcas, I understand its a killer whale but i still think of little girls clutching a keiko doll.

I don't live in Oregon, but I would love it if Oregon's team got moved up to MLS.

The first professional soccer match i ever saw was the Timbers years ago. Someone scored a hat-trick and the lumberjack guy kept cutting off slices of a big tree on the side of the pitch.

It wasn't until much later that I properly got into the sport and now I'm a season ticket holder for New York but I would be very happy for Portland to be a part of the league, someday when I end up in Portland again it would be nice to have a team to follow.

BTW, I don't think "promoted" is the right phrase to use in this case. MLS would have to award Portland a franchise. We could name it anything we want, but I think the prevailing sentiment would be for "Timbers." The current Portland Timbers team would cease to exist.

yeah Portland is one of the 6 iirc group looking to buy a franchise of MLS expansion for 2011. m l s n e t .com the message boards talk about the other cities that put bids in and we are waiting till dec or early jan/feb to find out who gets the two teams.
off the top of my head:

Portland Timbers FC
Montreal Impact
Vancouver White Caps
St Loius
Atlanta
Miami
Ottawa

there is one more us group but i cant think of it right now. PGE Park will look sweet when done being converted,

it'd be fun. i'd goto a few games but it would be hard to keep up with since they'd never be on tv

I would love to see the Timbers in the MLS and think this city could support an MLS team.

But when it comes to soccer events, I have found a litle gem. I can drink, watch good soccer and flirt with college girls all in one venue . . . UoP women's soccer. Laugh it up . . . but scoring occurs on all levels at those games.

This would be one of those "it's about time" things for me. Not that MLS is really that popular in the US, but I know Portland would be all over it.

I went there for a semester, and was part of the "Adidas Spirit Club". $5 an hour to cheer like a maniac at the women's games (Tiffany Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan...mmmm), sing along with the drums, run up and down the field with flags after goals...the whole nine yards.

Never scored myself, though. Them's the breaks.

I would imagine it got a little tougher since Seattle just got the Sounders FC. Would they put a NW team in 2 expansions in a row?

I'd love to see it. Rooting for Portland teams is much more fun than Seattle teams.

it wouldnt be in a row its seattle 2009 phila in 2010

with seattle having utah being the closest team Portland is a rival and close

the two front runners are montrel and portland imo.

They need to build a new baseball stadium for a team to come here...PGE park needs to be a soccer only venue to get MLS. I think they're still discussing a new stadium that would be built out in Lents for the Beavs. Portland is soccer town USA and we need to be in the top league in the country!

Update:
Portland Parks board to discuss Lents baseball proposal
by Tim Curran @ 4:15 pm. Filed under City news, Land Use
The Portland Parks & Recreation board will meet Wednesday, November 19, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 S.W. Capitol Hwy.

The public is invited and encouraged to join the Portland Parks Board and Portland Parks & Recreation staff in the discussion of several important agenda items, including the management of Ross Island, Lents Park and the baseball stadium proposal, the Rose Festival’s request for a festival extension, and the upcoming 2009/2010 budget process.
The Portland Parks Board has designated two to three meetings each year to be held in the evenings and at different locations around Portland to encourage more participation by the public.
For more information contact Karen Loper, Assistant to the Director, at 503-823-5123 or Beth Sorensen, Public Information Officer at 503-823-5300.

So is Portland considered a front-runner?

As far as anyone can tell yes they are. We have a good base of fans a good stadium plan, financing depends on a few political battles but we are looking pretty good.

Um, "promoted" is not correct. In England, teams are "promoted" due to their finish in what is basically the same federation.

In the U.S., MLS is not the same as whatever the league the Timbers find themselves in now is called. Plus, the Timbers lost to a bunch of literal amateurs from Hollywood United this season in the U.S. Cup.

plus the owners dad is the US treasurer!

Wow. Really? Did not know that.

Henry Paulson is a borderline criminal IMO after botching the "bailout" boondoggle while begging for the cash to pay out his pals.

well promoted to the EPL from the Champions League is big money playing with the big boys.....Portland Timbers going from the USL1 to MLS is big bucks and playing the big boys of NA soccer.

as for the loss look up the FA Cup the oldest Tournement in the world!!! This year they a lot of small tiny teams beating championship and division two teams...it happens.

what would you name your oregon/portland

NFL NHL and MLB teams?

Dude, that's women's soccer played at the highest level. It's nothing to laugh about. We should all be proud of the Lady Pilots and their achievements on the pitch.

too bad the men's team of oregon school stink but hey

Hillsboro is a hot bed for soccer (always has been) Hilhi won it 2 years ago and Glencoe almost won it this year!
