OT: Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan to announce resignation today

DAMN... I guess Sloan couldn't stand for a front office not willing to do what it takes to win, and probably gave KO a piece of his mind. If this is true, what a bad way to go out.
 
Wow- what a day.

Hosni Mubarak, Jon Kyl, Jerry Sloan. Doesn't look like a good day for long time incumbents.

Sloan had 2 Hall of Fame players for 15 years who got paid very well, and he had two U.S. Olympians the past 4 years. In between, he missed the playoffs for three seasons.

Sloan has had more to work with than any NBA coach not named Phil Jackson, and he has zero titles to show for it. Now that he loses some talent, he apparently takes his ball and quits on the team.

That's his legacy now ... quitter.

Mubarak hasn't resigned yet. Who knows what is going on over there. If he does resign, it looks like the military will be filling the void, along with Mubarak's hand-picked VP.
 
End of an era in Salt Lake City. Well, nothing is forever (except Joe Paterno). I'm sure this isn't the way Sloan would have preferred to go out.

Wow you are quite the judge. I'd love to see your resume. It's soo incredibly hard to win a title in the NBA, it really has to be the perfect storm. Sloan deserves the utmost credit for the consistency and stability he's brought to the franchise. On that note, Man I hope Nate get's resigned.

Since the military runs everything from hotels to appliance manufacturing, they have a vested interest in the status quo... but, since they're all citizens serving a mandatory tour of duty, they also have a vested interest in not shooting the people... who are also their main customers...

...so complicated!

Sloan didn't win a title and had two of the Top 20 players in NBA history for 15 years. I hate the Jazz. I'm not sure why I have to applaud the guy for quitting when the going got a little tough. My "resume" has nothing to do with calling him a quitter, because reportedly, he is quitting while his team is in playoff position.

Congrats to Sloan on being a quitter, I guess.

So I guess the question is now, how does this effect Utah, Portland and the playoffs. Does the replacement coach get more energy out of his guys for a while? Or does the team death spiral?
 
Or it could be the GM and coach deciding that he should "resign." I can't imagine the backlash the Jazz would get if they fired such a respected guy after 22 years of employment.

Well look at the other decisions their GM has made over the last couple of years and the players that have been let go. It's not like the guy has been hitting it out of the park as a GM, but he has been working for a franchise that almost has a hard cap for money to keep players with. They don't have a real hard cap, but the owners definitely control the purse strings tightly there.

they are likely entering in a death spiral as a franchise, Deron is gone the summer after next

Yep. The NBA decided the D league wasn't enough, so they decided they will just make teams like Portland, Utah, Cleveland and Milwaukee the official farm teams on the NBA for now. :ohno:

That's what I was thinking. Better for the team PR wise if it looks like Sloan made the choice himself. In return, Sloan gets a nicer severance package.

LOL, their management absolutely hates us. They've openly spoken about how they won't be "bullied" by PA and the Blazers. They will- under no costs- trade US a top 10 player.

That's a major reason why Boozer is gone and the franchise is so cash poor. Even from his grave, the ghost of kpee still haunts the Jazz.

I'm not sure about that. I do think it's possible that they would simply not trade with Portland, but I think they also have to worry about their jobs. If Portland's offer was the best, they really can't afford professionally to make their team worse just to avoid trading with the Blazers. It's not like there's just one monolithic entity known as the Jazz...there's a bunch of people running the Jazz who can be fired. I assume their jobs are more important to them than holding grudges.
