I agree. Varejao is a fairly average player. I consider both Millsap and Lee significantly above average (and place Millsap ahead of Lee due to Millsap's very good defense).

The Cavs played terrible without AV. Never got off the ground because he wasn't on the floor and only ended up winning 45 games. AV is getting what he deserves. He's a very important part of their machine. Without him, they're not very good.

I'd rank them Varejao, Millsap, Lee. AV can effectively guard most 4s and 5s, while the other two are smaller and liabilities guarding most 5's. That sort of flexibility rates high with me.

Varejao has little to no offensive game. He gets a lot of his buckets from everyone helping off Lebron and getting easy buckets or putbacks.

I agree he's a great energy guy who can defend both positions, but Millsap and Lee are better than energy guys (to me)

that makes sense... but personally I place premium value on D from the frontcourt. That AV is coordinated and can take advantage when it's there is enough on the other end.

He seems easily the biggest of the 3 and quality size comes at a premium

In a vacuum I would go Lee, Milsap AV, but that's just based on total talent. If you are putting players with specific teams, I would rate them differently. The Cavs need a good defensive big that can play the 5, and that puts AV at the head of the pack. For the Blazers, they need toughness with a mix of offensive and defensive abilities, and playing just PF is OK, so I would go Milsap. For the Spurs, who need more offense and have Duncan who can play either 4 or 5, I would select Lee. All in all, none of the three players are substantially better then the others, just better at certain things, and they all have some huge gaps in their games.

I think Millsap is being underrated defensively. He's just as productive as Lee, but a significantly better defender. Not quite as good a defender as Varejao, but still very good. And he's much better on offense than Varejao. They're equivalent rebounders.

They did overpay, but they could hardly make offers for Millsap or Lee (RFAs) and hope it worked out. AV would have headed for the hills and most likely they would have ended up with none of the three.

They are not crazy for wanting it at all. However, whether they get it or not is pot luck in this economy. Guards like Miller and Nate Rob. are in a similar position - they MAY get paid, but they may not as well.

It's not actually 6 years - $ 50 million.

Varejao's contract is worth $42.5 million over the six years, and the final year is only partially guaranteed. Incentives could push the total amount to $50 million.
