Sorry if this was posted somewhere else. I didn't notice it till now, and it was quite interesting.

http://trailblazerscentercourt.blogspot.com/2009/01/talking-with-travis-outlaw-hated.html
"My cousin told me about (what people write online)," said Outlaw. "He’s like ‘Travis, they hate you in Portland.’ And I’m like ‘You for real?’ And he’s like ‘Yeah.’ I was like, oh well, I don’t know everybody hated me. He said ‘Yeah, they hate you here.’"

I spend some time around Travis and have discussed this topic with him enough to know that he's not entirely serious (Outlaw tends to speak out of the corner of his mouth in a lower tone when he wants you to know he's joking around), but the twinge of doubt is there. A part of Travis, a guy who consistently asks and is legitimately interested in the opinions of others, really feels as though he's Portland's least wanted.

Even after hitting the game-winner against the Pistons, Outlaw still joked that he's not feeling the love.

"They most definitely still hate me," says Outlaw post-game. "They probably still be like ‘That’s still a bad shot; he just made it.’"

Hate is a strong word. Maddening, yes. I think Travis is a pretty good guy, and comes through with some great games/moments from time to time. But his lack of consistency can drive a fan nuts. It's not like much of the the whole team isn't that way though, if you actually think about it. There are only 2 consistent players on the whole team.

Sergio and Channing?

I hate his step back fade away jumper, even when he hits it. I don't hate Outlaw though. Outlaw's cousin, if you're reading this, make sure you get that straight. Oh and tell him I've enjoyed the stop on a dime, crossover between the legs while watching the defender go by move he's done a few times recently. Thanks.

Trout just can't win so I feel bad for him. He has the desire and balls to take those last-second, game-winning shots when it seems like many others on the team are hesitant to. And clearly, he can't make them all. Even when he does make them, he's right b/c many people seem to think that it was a bad shot, that he shouldn't have taken it but thank God he made it! Then it's back him having to prove himself again the next game.

Yeah, he is somewhat of a chucker and, yes, he does some things that make you shake your head . . . but which player(s) have been anywhere near perfect this year?

Travis' cousin is a fucking moron.

What he is saying is not the truth.

Why he distorts reality, even after Travis called him on the unbelievable statement, is beyond me.

But then, Travis isn't the sharpest tool in the Blazer shed. Maybe that kind of thinking, talking, whatever, runs in the family.

Yeah, that's right Travis - I don't hate you - but I sure as hell did just dis your family.

Time to start hanging out with the SMART cousin.

Travis is a hell of a player and a nice guy. He'll do well on another NBA team suited for his talents.

Sad but I think you're right. It'll be awfully painful if/when he hits those buzzer-beaters against us down the line.

If his cousin has read the same things I have, I can easily see how his cousin would make that statement. There's a lot of hate on here sometimes. I think most of the hate is directed at his game and not at him as a person, but if I'm related to Travis and read this shit I'm not making that distinction either.

By that time, whatever team Travis will be on will be down 30 in the 4th quarter to the Blazers, so I'd say that we're safe.

Maybe his cousin could take some pointers from his brother. Instead of telling Travis "Portland hates you", he could say (as John did):
John, his brother, agrees with McMillan's theory, that Outlaw could drive more and get more dunks or free throw attempts instead of settling for the jumper. But Outlaw doesn't want to hear any of it.

"Now, Carmelo, he's doing 360 (degree) fades, and George Karl is over there (he claps his hands) 'That's all right,'" Outlaw says. "Let me get a light like that. I be trying some stuff."

He has, in essence, fallen in love with his jumper, and is not shy about admitting it. He calls his jumpers "wet" because they splash through the net.

"I shoot jumpers like layups," Outlaw says. "Sometimes I get on a fast break and I want to pull up."

I read stuff like that and it makes me sick. There were a few games last year where it appeared that Travis was figuring out that when he went to the rim, he got fouled a lot. Whats easier, 2 free throws or a pull up jumper?

In Travis' case that might be a push.

That would make you as stupid as his cousin.

Show me one thread where the majority of posters - not posts - "hates" Travis.

The quote doesn't say "some people", a "vocal minority", the "usual band of haters". He implies all Portland hates him.

Nor does the quote say his cousin said, "they hate you and a bunch of other players too. Man they bitch about everyone except Roy - and then even him once in a while."

Nope, cousin says something apart from reality, removed from the truth, a lie. A stupid lie.

"They" - Implying most Portland fans.

"Hate" - Intense dislike

"You" - Travis and no one else.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

You may very well be right on that, now that I look at his stats. I had not realized his shooting percentage had dropped so much either. He is fortunate that his 3 point percentage is actually near what is over all FG% is. That helps his scoring average a lot. Every since he started shooting 3 pointers in volume, his shooting percentage has plummeted. At the same time, he is not the only member of the team that seems to have fallen in love with the 3.

We complain a lot more than we attaboy on here but we don't represent the average fan at all either. After every game someone has to use the board as their therapist and we have targeted just about every player... and even the ones we don't complain about we throw into all kinds of trade fantasies.

That being said... anyone who thinks any board on the Internet is an accurate sampling... is a little misinformed.

Silly me, trying to reason with you.

I just don't understand how a jump shooter can't hit free-throws, his average this year is terrible...

And people don't hate Outlaw, they hate his inconsistent play for a 6th year man.

Silly me, trying to reason with you.

You argued for why you understand how someone could react on an emotional level, such that they become stupid; ie; close their eyes to the entire picture so they can gather a more complete truth beyond the schoolyard stupidity of "they" called me a name = everyone hates me.

You didn't present a reasoned argument with truths about the incident. Whether you "understand" how the cousin could have reacted that way or not, does not change the fact that he misled Travis to the true state of affairs. Travis would be best served not paying attention to this cousin. He is pretty clueless about this aspect of the world.

Speaking of schoolyard, this is how you silence the "haters" Travis;

"Scoreboard bitches".

I'll like Travis more if he'd take fans for rides in his fly whips!

He must know the coaches hate him too then, since I'm sure the fans and the coaches get on Outlaw about the same things.

Yeah, i remember being sad a few weeks back. I don't think anyone hates him, we just critique his game, which is what you do on message boards. He does get a lot of unneeded hate in my opinion, but he also has some qualities that are tough on fans.

oh well, i like Travis. Rebound and take good shots and work hard on D and i'm extremely happy w/ him.

Yeah, you aren't reacting emotionally at all when you call his cousin a "fucking moron" and then say I'm as stupid as his cousin (meaning a fucking moron) because I can understand where he's coming from...

It's funny this means so much to you that you're actually breaking down the sentence word by word. Let's forget the fact that Travis was simple summarizing their conversations and the quotes shouldn't be taken literally. For all we know, the actually words the cousin used were different.

People generalize, that's a fact of life. His cousin's not going to say, "Look man, 6% of Blazer fans think you don't rebound enough and critique your game, as well as others, on an emotional and sometimes unfair level, bro." That's not going to happen.

I'm not going to go look for it because I could care less, but Travis has been insulted every bit as bad as you just insulted his cousin, so his cousin knows more than you on the subject apparently. I wonder what that makes you?
