Every thread seems to turn into an Outlaw bash, so I thought I'd start a thread.

So...pile on Travis! Let it all out!

I'll start. He almost had a turnover on a pass that ended up an assist, and he took two tough shots that went in the basket!!!

when all the scapegoats are outlawed, only outlaws will have scapegoats.

There is no scapegoat in a game like last nights. Everybody played bad. The only way last nights game could have been worse is if the Blazers suffered more injuries. The way I can tell? If you read the post game interviews, every player and coach on the team was trying to take the blame for the loss. It was a complete breakdown, and the team was not ready for that intense of a game.

Hey, that's great, but perhaps you could clue in some posters here to this fact. Plus I read how "great" Rudy and Batum played in a bad loss.

If the entire season on this site is going to be BBF/ Jarrett Jack redux, but this time starring Outlaw, I am going to take things to the extreme. He is asked to score. That is Travis' role on the team. Why doesn't anybody bitch about Joel not scoring? It's like Travis needs to be the one player who has all the tools. I don't get it.

I disagree. History has shown that I am one of the biggest Outlaw bashers there are. He played find last night. I still think Batum should have played more but Outlaw played fine.

I like Outlaw. He just should not have been in the starting lineup.

You know it's interesting you bring that up about Joel. The dude can not score. But they ran at least 10 plays for him last night. I can not help but think that had to been a mistake.

OK, I'll bite: I've asked multiple times, and I'll consolidate them here. No one has answered me yet. And just so I'm sure, what should my takeaway be? That Travis is a great player who wants to be a Carmelo Anthony All-Star and shoot from wherever he wants, whenever he wants (paraphrasing his words, not mine). And when it goes in, I should be ecstatic and effusive in my praise that he is the starting SF for the next 10 years? And when it doesn't (57% of the time--or if you prefer, w/a TS% of 49), I should just shrug it off as a "bad game from a streak shooter?"

yes, they all played worse than Travis. But what NO ONE is mentioning is that Travis was at about his absolute peak today. Most of those off-balance, contested 20-foot jumpers outside the flow of the offense were going in tonight. That's well and good, but you saw what that kind of player (not just Travis) does to our offense. He didn't crash the boards, other than the one putback at the end of the second.

And it's not "just one game". It's 5 full years and one game of his being here, 3 full years and a game of him "having a chance", 1 full year and a game since he was competing for the starting 3, and 1 full game since he was given the start over an "overmatch and scared" rookie.

I'm a biased troll, but I think it's justified. Move without the ball, or something!

A sampling of the reasons we lost (by no means a comprehensive list)...tell me if any of these sound familiar:
1. A standstill, jump-shooting offense with little motion (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/shotch...meId=281028013 -- Shot Chart)
2. Little defensive intensity (look at # of dunks/layups/wide-open 3s that the L*kers had)
3. Poor execution on our own fastbreaks (Blake fumbling it around, Travis taking contested 18-footers on a 3-on-2, Bayless taking it himself and not having runners with him)
4. Erratic rotations/minutes
5. Little low-post offense. Greg was standing at the FT line and setting pick-and-pops for LMA from 18 feet? To his credit, at least he shot it from inside the paint, though none went down.
6. This is a new one: little cohesion among the starting unit. Forget that Batum started for the last 2 weeks in practice and games...let's switch it up right beforehand. And who's the one who generally doesn't do well remembering offensive spacing or defensive sets? Let's put him in the starting lineup with no practice time!

I'm usually not Negative Nancy, but can someone tell me what they saw that showed this team in "getting better" or "growing together" or any other of the happy feel-good stuff people are saying?

With the exception of the last one, we were making all of these mistakes last year. What have we shown that we're "growing together", or "going through growing pains", or "learning"?

Since I guess I'm a "bashing Travis troll now", I'll say this again, and hope for a response. Yes, Travis made 8 of 15 shots. Yes, he was one of the only Blazers that were putting the ball in the hole. Someone please explain to me how what you saw last night from him showed any improvement in his game. He's still shooting contested long jumpers. (To his credit, he made about half of them last night) He did have 2 layup attempts in 15 shots. He did grab 2 offensive boards. But much of the 35 minutes he was standing around, going into isolations, playing C or C- defense, taking contested jumpers, not looking for the open man until he was doubled. Fine if he's on the White Squad with Sergio and Frye...not so much as a starter.

On to Blake. His 3pt shooting was ok, but he wasn't "facilitating"...he wasn't running a crisp break when we DID have opportunities, he also was playing C- defense.

Channing's shot chart looked like one of Travis's from last year: one missed layup, 6 jumpers from the 16-24 foot range, 0for7. I'm not tosing him under the bus just yet, but he needs to get tough on D and work within the flow of the offense. I didn't see Diogu pushing him for minutes, though.

Rudy really needs to be playing more. Not sure what else to say. He moves without the ball, plays aggressive D, hits 3's, finds open men, etc.

I wish we could have started Batum.

I don't think the "White Team" will be a great unit until Webs comes back, but especially if Outlaw's starting. If we're going to play like @$$, I'd at least like to get minutes for guys that may improve with them (Batum, Bayless, Sergio) or guys who know what they are doing (Rudy, Roy, LMA).

OT: I just heard Dana Jacobsen tease the Oden highlight as a "huge injury". Guh.

Someone who's blowing smoke right now could help me out by telling me how I should be encouraged about the team's progress. Not "it was a nervous night in LA" or "they're just getting better". Tell me how they showed any improvement, please.

Outlaw isnt a bad player, he is actually better than Webster who was drafted in the lottery. I guess people were expecting the next Gerald Wallace in him.

I think he would fit in with the Heat really well with Wright at the 3, send Outlaw,Frye and LaFrentz for Marion,Joel Anthony and a conditional first

That's a fundamental difference between us. I disagree. If you want to say "better scorer", fine. It'll be hard to substantiate any claims further than that, like "better shooter", "better passer", "better rebounder", or "better defender".

people were saying Webster was the next Glen Rice because of his offensive ability but he just hasnt shown it. Outlaw has pretty much been what the scouts said he would except not being able to be dominate consistently on offence.

Outlaw played very well last night. Unfortunately he didn't play this well during the preseason. Batum should have started.

One: Webster has consistently beaten out Travis for the starting spot over the last 2 1/2 years.
Two: When given the opportunity to be in Travis' "me-first gunner" role, he scored 24 points in a quarter.
Three: Nate's said that Martell's a better fit for the starting role.
Four: When Travis is given the chance to start, he keeps the same game he has in his 'other role' as a me-first gunner.

I don't know what all those mean. I just wanted to say them. Sorry.

One: Webster has consistently beaten out Travis for the starting spot over the last 2 1/2 years.

Your more likely to give minutes to someone you invested more into which is why Webster has gotten more minutes. Webster isnt alot better Outlaw and Outlaw isnt alot better than Webster so give the one who you have more to lose on start.

We need our SF to be the energy guy who scraps on defense, rebounds, and gets us extra possesions. That's not Travis's game, that's Batums. I understand Nate switching the lineup last night but I hope he goes back to Batum starting. Travis is one dimensional and coggs down the 1st team offense when hes in there. There is absolutely no movement because they know 99% of the time he's going to shoot. That's fine for a great scorer or a gunner off the bench but not for the 1st team unit.

There will always be an argument between the two. The difference I believe is that if Martell is out there and not getting shots, he still gets something done, and defends. What does Outlaw do if he is not making shots? Nothing.

Huh? According to scouts Outlaw was going to be able to dominate consistently on offense?

What are you talking about?

The premise of this thread is a bit silly... hyperbole with a side of martyrdom.

Outlaw was fine last night. He's about the only Blazer that played at the level we expect him to.

I'm more of a Webster fan, myself, but I'm not going to ignore that Outlaw was pretty good last night and/or blame HIM for the loss when Roy and Aldridge and Oden all were so weak.

Complaining about Outlaw is like whining about how you don't like your refrigerator while your house is burning down. Sure, it may be a crappy refrigerator. But it's kind of hard to evaluate it when beams are falling on your head.

Similarly, it's pointless to say we should start Bayless or Batum or whomever.

There are only two lessons to be learned from this experience:
1. We have a really young team, and they look to be a lot more fragile than we hoped (at least on opening night against the champion favorite while playing on the road and on TNT and during Oden's much-hyped first NBA game.)
2. Oden is injured again.

Actually, even #1 doesn't sound so bad the way I put it. In retrospect it's surprising somebody didn't throw up at tipoff.

He led us in scoring last night shooting better then 50%.

Outlaw played well in a loss. How often have we heard people claim that a similar scenario just proved that Zach or Sheed were a detriment to the team? :dunno:

This thread is depressing me. Heck, even my cup of coffee is depressing me today. I think I'm going to go try not to think of basketball anymore...

at least not until tonight's game!

Would it be more or less depressing to you if I tell you there is not another game until Friday night?

Hmmm. Long wait. Highly anticipated matchup. National TV. Championship contender.

Nope, I can't see how this could go wrong.

Sad thing from Outlaw's standpoint . . . imagine how fans are going to react when he has a bad game . . .

There is no scapegoat in a game like last nights. Everybody played bad. .

That is simply not true. Both Outlaw and Rudy played pretty well last night. I'm starting to wonder if Rudy will become the best player on our team.

Sad for Travis, but great for me. I can't wait for the anger that we'll see from some posters here. If 18 pts (8-15)/4 rebs/2 assists is worthy of criticism, I imagine we'll see a full-fledged meltdown from posters here who literally could not get a decent shot off against Outlaw in real life.

You think a 19 year old who has never played in the NBA before should've been thrown out there to play against the Western Conference champs?? It was the right move to put Outlaw out there. Outlaw is a veteran who knew how to handle the hostile crowd and he handled it great.

I like Outlaw. He just should not have been in the starting lineup.

Why? He was in our closing lineup (Jack, Roy, Jones, Outlaw, LMA) all last season. He can obviously play well with the starters. Why do you have a problem with him starting? We have to figure out who will be our point in the closing minutes. Steve Blake hardly ever played down the stretch. I'm hoping Bayless starts and finishes. And soon.
