Zombie Palin/Biden Debate Thread (Democrats suck)

I never said its going to turn the polls around.

That's what I meant by a "game-changer." Something that fundamentally changes the situation for the two candidates.

What its going to do is to take Palin off as a huge liability for McCain, which she has been the last 2 weeks after the Couric interview, etc.

I don't think she's been a huge liability. I really don't think she's had a lot of effect. I think the economy has been the huge liability to McCain. In a good economy, I think McCain is in the lead, even if Palin did all the same things.

Have you been reading the threads here about Palin and how she's going to run into a brick wall?

Palin did a very credible job. She was very well coached, and memorizing her closing statement was a killer. She's very good at looking directly at the camera. However, in at least three occassions, she completely ignored the question and just launched into her talking points, which (a) on one hand was a good strategy, and she did it without fumbling around, which made it hard to remember what the actual question was, and (b) annoyed the hell out of me.

She also clearly wasn't listening at all to what Biden was saying (looking happily into the camera while he was breaking down, talking about his family and losing a child); she had the most trouble in her follow-up comments, which often had nothing to do with what Biden had been talking about ("Let me return to taxes").

She has the ability to talk about anything and give the impression that she knows what she is talking about. I'm not belittling that; it is a great skill to have.

I thought Biden did a fine job as well. He did a good job at kind of ignoring her, and talking about McCain and his policies, and trying to differentiate the Democratic ticket. He got out his talking points and didn't show disrespect to his opponent.

score!

I think it is pretty hard for McCain or Palin to win the debate even if they really do win the debate. All the channels have all these democrats talking about how Obama and Biden won the debate when they really didn't. I do think both debates were close and I don't really think they make any difference except for people especially the republican base to have more faith in Palin. I have said for a long time Obama is going to win and now the question is how big of a win for Obama. It could be close or a landslide. I just think with the economy McCain is going to lose points more all the time.

"fairness"

That code word comes from the socialist party of the early 1900s and other similar movements prior.

Actually the idea originated at least as far back as the Gladiators of Rome.

You seem a little paranoid.

I don't get the emphasis on "winning" and "losing." They aren't competing against each other. Their job is just to present their views to the American people, and allow voters to accurately differentiate among their policies and positions.

I dunno I agree with Biden winning this one. The McCain/Obama won was closer, but I also found that one more frustrating to watch. I think I would give a slight edge to McCain.

Frank Luntz with his group of undecideds, Palin won the debate almost unanimous. (These are undecideds, split their votes between Kerry/Bush last time, were 50-50 for/against Palin ahead of the debate).

Frank Luntz's focus group got shown as a farce during the primaries.

She didn't get killed, so she won.

Next Tuesday, Town hall with Tom Brokaw. McCain's specialty.

all this "she won because she didnt sound like as much of an idiot as she did in her interview" shit is fucking hilarious. she is completely full of shit, and waaaay over her head. how anyone could vote for a 72 year old mccain with her a heartbeat away from being president is beyond my comprehension.

again, it was a narrow win for Biden if you're just barely go on the content (or flip it the other way depending on who you talk to). If a guy with his experience in washington and politics can't totally destroy someone who is "full of shit and waaay over her head", then she must be doing something right.

Biden won the CBS poll 46-21. (and also won the CNN poll I'm told).

I guess Biden actually managed to win the debate, even with Sarah Palin not sounding like a complete idiot like in the Couric interview.

Game over.

Yeah, and a guy with essentially two full years in the Senate and no track record whatsoever is that much better. Si se puede!

if you lose 100-0 or 1-0 its still a loss.

She didn't lose

Internet polls are useless as various message boards flood the results with bot attacks.

I don't think you understand me. I'm not saying she wasn't looked down upon and that expectations for her weren't low. I'm saying that I don't think she's had much effect on the race.

I think she has been having a negative effect on the race due to previous interviews. People saw her and questioned McCain's decision. This debate, while it doesn't answer all questions, shows that she is not a complete idiot at least in the frame of reference of this debate.

There were even reports about how people in the GOP were questioning how well she could hold. Many undecided voters who were GOP leaning were probably more assured that she didn't fall on her face.

The polls during the democratic primary seemed to reflect the Obama shift. I disagree that they are worthless when taking a large amount of them (from decent sources) into account.

Real, how can you say Palin won? She won, based on the metric I thought she would be measured by going into the debate. But based on the post-debate polls, it's clear she lost, and in a big way.

In a big way? How so?

Are you talking about online polls? Like I said, they are skewed by special action groups on both sides of the political spectrum.

Its like an ESPN poll on "who is the MVP of the league" or something. Naturally a bunch of Kobe fans go there and vote over and over again (or whomever).

Xericx is right.

Palin got her ass kicked so badly, Biden was still able to beat out those damn cheating republicans. Proxying bastards!

Yes. that's it.

face it, most democrats were just waiting for a repeat of the Couric "interview". No such guffaws on Palin's part. Its ok to cry.

Chris Matthews had a good analogy. Biden won, but Palin beat the spread.

Biden won the SCIENTIFIC CBS poll 46-21. Don't try to discount a SCIENTIFIC poll, by calling it something it's not. Unless you want to start calling a telephone survey online.
