He
The only thing that really concerns me is how he is late to react on the defensive end. He really needs to work on staying with his man. I guess I'm a bit spoiled from the Iron Man. Seeing that shit sticks out like a sore thumb.
He just seems to be over committing or over aggressive and gets beat the way he isn't leaning. Probably correctable.

It's the instincts that he needs to develop. Like muscle memory on how he reacts when players drive after a fake. I agree about "over committing"

Yeah, I agree. Pat has a good opportunity to be a starter in a couple years if he can work on that part of his game. I this the offense will come naturally in Stotts's system.

Now that's hilarious!

Many laughed at Matthews being a starter in his third year. If Pat works hard, he has a great chance to get there. He's definitely got what it takes behind the ears and his got the natural talent to expand his game. Why would this be laughable if he works hard?

There really is a lot of similarities between the two as both rookies. i.e their size, mid range game, handles, 3 pt shot, BBIQ, hustle.

Pat is more athletic in the open court and Wes was more advanced on the defensive end. But you are right, if he works hard enough he can get better. I am a little down on his mid range game as I was with Wes, Sergio and countless other Blazer guards. I just think they all need that in-between game. CJ and Crabbe excel at that.

I'm just not seeing it, but I guess we will wait and see.

PC is a rookie! The game hasn't slowed down for any of these rooks yet. Might turn out to be a young Sasha Pavlovic

If you were looking for the sentence that is the very definition of the term "damning with faint praise"...you've found it.

With second round picks I think it is kind of simple...these guys do not have well-rounded games, that is why they aren't first round picks. Does he have a translatable skill? Yes. He can shoot the ball and he's aggressive attacking the basket.

Thinking Pat is going to come in and even be average at everything is extremely overrating the impact of a second rounder. The guy has a skill that can potentially translate to the NBA level. Let's let him develop the rest of his game before we go demanding too much. He's going to get spot minutes this year--if he is lucky and hopefully in the mean time he can spend time improving the rest of his game so in a year or two he is well-rounded enough to play minutes at the NBA level.

2nd rounders that have immediate impacts are usually players with first-round talent that had off-court issues or concerns that dropped them to the second round. Pat was not one of those guys.

Young Sasha had exactly one season with a PER above 9. I'm hoping for better than that from Project Pat.
Let young Pat play with Lebron and see how much he even touches the ball. Sasha had a good motor. Consumate role player with the Cavs. I see a similarity. Effort on defense, decent jump shot. Get you a rebound when you need one. Overselling PC is going to happen, but he's a 2nd round project so far.

Pavlovic's best season was with Lebron--the finals season of 2007. It's not as though Pavlovic's usage rate was his issue; it was his ability to contribute in any way other than shooting, and he didn't really do that all that well either (TS% over .45 only once--in 2007).

I'm not saying that Project Pat is going to be an all-star, but it's OK to admit that Sasha one-nearly-average-season Pavlovic was a really low standard to set for him.

Before he ever came to the Blazers Matthews was a starter for Jerry Sloan.... Nobody laughed here because we lost Roy...

Disagree... I bet if we back up to the archives, you will see major complaints about his contract and why didn't we get a decent starter

There were some saying we need to replace Matthews for years. Though I don't recall anyone laughing or making fun. We always knew he was a WAY better defensively than Roy. We also knew that you had to be a HARD worker to go undrafted and become a starter for Sloan. Please don't EVER compare Pat "No D" Conaghwhatever to The Iron Man.

BLASPHEMER!!! :smiley-195517897341

Don't make me have to look this up and put you in yer place son!

Pat's gonna have to become a dead eye 3 point shooter to stick in the NBA. His athleticism is overrated.

I'm pretty sure I was on O-Live at the time so you may be right. Bottom line "Project" Pat should never be compared to Wesley. Wesley Matthews was always a defensive player first and a shooter second. Pat is the opposite.

Well, I never said project pat was compared defensively to Matthews. I am comparing how he was a very "underdog" player. That is very similar

Pat is one of those guy that used to practice his vertical leap. He isn't quick of foot enough to not get abused on defense even if he does block a shot or sky for a rebound.
No one would be talking about Pat if he were simply an invintee and not a draft pick. Are there any threads about Malcolm Thomas? He's looked much better than Pat.

Malcolm Thomas has looked great!

You would be correct. Before the Jazz declined to match there were only a few of us in Wes' corner and that was as a back up to Roy. But it was still worth the money.

And it did not help that Wes started out slow with the Blazers. He never did play well off the bench, or as a starter playing with the 2nd unit. He excelled as a starter, playing with other starters. He never had the handles or the passing ability to be the guy with the 2nd unit. Maybe Pat will turn out that way too.

Btw, I believe I took the longest to warm up to Matthews. I thought the deal was stupid! Hahaha

I think Sasha's claim to fame is that he started some games in the playoffs next to Lebron. He always looked like a russian you couldn't trust.

This guy sucks. All he is a spot shooter. Crabbe is ten times better then this guy

Looks like my "Project Pat" nickname is sticking!

After coining "Nards" I'm thinking I might have a knack for this...

For diez I'm thinking "hairy spainish dude"
