OT Pat Summitt, legendary Lady Vols coach, dies at 64

Really sad. She was a great basketball mind and an even better person, from what I've read. Altzheimers is a nasty killer.

Back in 2001 when the Blazers were spinning out of control and it was clear Dunleavy was losing the team, I wanted them to hire Pat Summitt. I could just see her turning her glare on Rasheed Wallace and Sheed meekly saying "yes, ma'am". Probably would have!

Who knows how many more wins she could have logged had she lived a more expected lifetime.

I won't say rest in peace as resting was anathema to Summitt. Rather:

Kersey! Move the ball! Luke, you call that playing defense? Come on Duck, set a pick already!

If ever there was a famous person who excelled simply by her own way of thinking it was Pat Summitt. To get cut down with this disease sucks for anyone but it is especially bad for a person like her.

I don't doubt for a second that she would have been a great NBA coach, would have been cool if Portland had hired her.

Every player she coached at Tennessee earned her degree. Not one dropout. Amazing.

Not sure offhand, MM, but pretty high. Consider: the WNBA has a requirement of 4 years college or age 22; the men need only one year college. The (few) men who make it in NBA are financially set for life so less incentive for degrees; for women, far fewer opportunities and much less money so even those who play professionally know they will need other jobs later on. There is a lot more incentive for women to graduate.

Just stunned that Pat Summitt is gone so soon. Her Tennessee teams were amazing and I can't think of a better role model. 38 years a head coach and a 100 per cent gradation rate is her greatest achievement. My mom put it best, "she helped changed sports forever."

Do you think she might have known how to effectively used Sabonis? Would have been worth a try.

RIP Pat, one of the most influential female coaches in the game
