People should be rewarded for NOT procreating. Its bad for the environment.

San Francisco has become the first US municipality to mandate employers offer fully paid parental leave, and activists hope the progressive new law will pave the way for policies across the country.

The US is the only developed country that doesn’t guarantee paid maternity or parental leave to workers. San Francisco’s legislation, adopted on Tuesday, is an important step forward in a long campaign to bring the country up to speed with all other industrialized nations that have paid leave laws, which experts say carry tremendous health benefits for parents and children.

California is one of only five states that have some form of a paid family leave program on the books, though San Francisco’s bill – passed unanimously after supporters rallied on the steps of City Hall – is more advanced than existing US laws by mandating that businesses pay mothers and fathers their full wages during a six-week leave period.

“Everytime San Francisco adopts a local pro-worker ordinance, we’re told that it’s going to be the end of the world for businesses,” said Scott Wiener, San Francisco supervisor who sponsored the proposal. “What ends up happening is the state and sometimes even the federal government follows our lead ... I’m confident other cities and states will take notice.”

Under California’s paid leave program, which was the first US law of its kind when it passed in 2002, employees are entitled to six weeks of partial pay – 55% of their salary – to take time off to care for newborns, including adopted and foster children. The paid time off is funded by employee payroll contributions.

Starting in 2017, San Francisco’s law will complement state law, mandating that employers with 50 or more workers provide the remaining 45% of employees’ wages for a six-week leave. The law will in phases extend to businesses with 20 or more employees.

City of portland already offers six weeks paid leave for the dad or mom

Yeah, that sounds so dumb, just a year off to fuck around if you want.

You're always so hard core about this shit Pres.

I think to be fair we should tax the aliens so that we can give 18 years of 100% paid parental leave, free college with room, board and training table privileges, 48 weeks of paid vacation every year, a guaranteed return on on everyone's 401k, and free cryogenic freezing of everyone's head when they die.

Do you have kids? If you don't then you probably shouldn't comment on this. If you do I'd like to know your valid point as to why paternity leave is not necessary. I had the luxury of being able to work from home when my son was born. There is no better thing than to be able to raise your own kids. My son is 9 now and has never spent a day in daycare. I am very proud of that.

And for the record, six week of paternity leave ain't shit. When you think about these Progressive benefits people need to stop thinking about it as "too much" and start thinking of it as "more than you're used to".

I worked in public accounting when my first was born. She was born during tax season. I was at work the next day.

Needless to say, I no longer work in public accounting. I resigned my position just before the second child was born, and started the new (and current) job a month after she was born.

Needless to say, I'm a King in the eyes of the first-born, a second-rate citizen in the eyes of the second-born.

Go fucking figure.

I wouldn't take it so hard, the 2nd born probably looks at her real dad as a king.

No doubting either as mine.

I know it's a joke, even if you play it like it's not, but ain't no doubting unless someone else has my exact DNA.

Having kids is a choice.

Employers shouldn't be forced to accommodate this choice while at the same time penalizing those who did not choose to have kids. Its irrelevant that I don't have kids.

You choose voluntarily to have a child. Therefore, you are rewarded with extra paid time off. To me, that's bullshit. Work is a zero sum game, the less you're there, the more I have to work.

Women want equality but always need something extra. How about you stay home with the kid, and have dinner ready when I come home with the check like god intended? Or here's an idea, if you cant afford a kid on one income dont fucking have one.

I'm not sure the government should be regulating this, but cheers to any private company that offers it as one of their benefits.

And really, San Francisco is a progressive city politically, if you are a staunch conservative and just can't be bothered with pussy liberal hippie ideals, you probably should live somewhere else if you hate it so much.

Agreed 100% I have no kids and turning 30 this year because I cant afford kids. Now I have to work harder so irresponsible people can pop out hoodlums.

Agreed, I moved 2800 miles away from that madness

Same argument for family medical leave act. Some people take 2 months paid vacation to watch a family member die while I carry their work load. When my grandpa died I took 2 days off. 1 to drive to the funeral, attend, and sleep, 1 to drive back.

People die. Part of life. Sack the fuck up and carry on.

You won't understand what I'm going to say but it's time for a little real talk.

Paternity leave is the best thing that has happened to (middle class and upper middle class) white people in years.

You see white people in this country are scared. No seriously they are. Everywhere they look there are more and more people who aren't white. Almost monthly there is some new article out there showing that white people will eventually be the minority in the USA.

But when you look at the statistics, (middle class and upper middle class) white people are breeding less and less. Crazy huh? I mean the easiest way to solve this slipping into minority status is for (middle class and upper middle class) white people to start making more babies.

So why aren't Mr and Mrs White person having more kids?

Money.

And we're not talking about the added expense of having kids. We're talking about career setbacks.

You see when it's time for (middle class and upper middle class) white mommy to have baby they leave the workforce. When looking at the cost of daycare of an infant, trying to find a place close enough to breast feed the little bugger during lunch time, and all sorts of other mother/baby/family bonding it often makes sense for multiple reasons that you don't really care about for one parent to leave their job for a while.

But...

When it's time to reenter the workforce you're coming back at a lower paying position than when you left.

(This contributes to why women make less than men do in the same profession. Men don't leave to have babies (as often). )

You graduate from college, get a job as an assistant manager at the Acme Cog factory, work your ass off, get promoted to manager, husband says, "hey hun, lets have a baby!" You leave, have your cute little white baby, spend a year raising/bonding/changing diapers. And it's time to reenter the job market. So... you end up getting a job at Zzz Cog factory as an assistant manager.

Fuck!

You have the expense of an extra mouth to feed but you're making less money than when it was just you and your husband.

Oh well, hard work will get you that raise and promotion but the next time hubby says lets make a baby you tell him to fuck the hell off.

This is why Family Leave is good for whitey. It reduces the financial setback that occurs when they decide to have more future (middle class and upper middle class) white people. Mama takes a pause in her career to have her babies instead of having to restart her career. That means much higher career earnings, more minivans bought, private school enrollment, bigger houses, etc. It's a boost to the economy and it slows white people's slide into minority status.

Save white people! Make it easier for them to breed!

If you are gonna have kids, have girls. Only have to give them 73% of the allowance boys get.
