IMO the Blazers are a team in search of an identity right now. Roy with his various skills have been center to the Blazers identity the past several years.

The Roy we have this year is a far cry from who he's been in the past. He cannot create and explode as in the past which means defenders can play him tighter for a jump shot because the respect for his others skills is gone. Also without those other skills, defenses can focus on the other players on the team more as Roy demands less attention.

We've seem others step up to a degree, Batum playing a bigger role, LMA seeming to have stepped up, Miller is playing a bigger role, etc. It is all part of the team searching for their new identity. It is one thing for Roy to get hurt during the season and have to take time off, etc. but to have had the summer of and to come back a shadow of his former self, it shakes up the team.

The players aren't dumb. They knew long before we did that things weren't right. If the leader can't lead, it means that everyone has to adjust, i.e., the team has to search for a new identity.

As part of that search/adjustment, there will be pains (as we have witnessed) but that doesn't necessarily mean the team will be worse in the end. I occasionally see hopes that we'll become more of a running team. With Roy playing a smaller part of the overall offense, that may be allowed to happen.

The biggest impediment to change in my opinion is Nate. He's had decent success the past few years with a "Roy" team. He will take time to adjust hoping that this player, in whom he has great trust, will still be able to lead the team.

It may not be fun, but it will be interesting to see how the team (players and coaches) change and adjust.

Gramps...

Sorry, Gramps, but it's already past the point where the Blazers should play the song "Patience" before every broadcast. Every year we are asked to be patient.

I don't dislike Nate as much as, well, a certain poster above, but he is very slow to adjust to new realities. Very slow.

Denny, I took the liberty of putting your name on a purchase agreement I signed as your agent to buy a local cliff. It was perfect because of the burial plots at the bottom and I had to close the deal fast.

So do you want to make the announcement or should I? I figure charging each board member $100 would cover one cliff use and one burial plot.

I thought you retired...

Perhaps. While I'm disappointed in what I've seen so far this year, I also see things that make me hopeful that all is not lost. I think the time is now to de-couple the Blazers from Brandon Roy, or probably better stated, de-couple their offensive mindset from him. The thing about the Brandon offense was that it was efficient and relieved Nate of some of the pressure of developing a team-based offense. With Brandon suffering, this is where Nate has to earn his keep and step up and develop a more team-based (less ISO) offense. I think such an offense can be both efficient and much more enjoyable to watch. Not only that, I think such an offense will also help others get more into the game and develop their skills as well.

Agree completely... I just worry that it will be Feb or March before Nate gets around to thinking about that.

Turns out I misspelled Murkowski in half the posts so the recount shows 1500.

I will be surprised if this team makes the playoffs at this point. Past the first round is a joke, and Nate won't be resigned after this year.

It is not this year I am worried about, it is pretty much already hosed. It is the next 5 years of the team's future, with no star players left on the team and an already maxed out payroll.

It sucks because Roy probably wouldn't walk away from his contract, even though he won't deserve it if he's damaged goods. I could see him pulling a Darius Miles and trying to eek out another contract after this one, probably with another team.

So has Paul Allen pretty much wrapped up his assets in Roy, LA, and W.Matthews at this point?

I think you are wrong about Nate. Rich Cho "grew up" in basketball with Nate in Seattle, and I don't think he will want to let him go. PA and the Klingons love and adore Nate because of the Seattle connection as well. I thinkif anything, Nate will have to walk away on his own

If this team continues the march toward missing the playoffs, he'll be fired. The luster finally came off Nate last season, culminating in management forcing to change up his assistants. We'll have to be solidly out of the hunt though around the AS break.

I'd be surprised if was actually fired as he's on a one year contract. Besides, his assistants were let go due to who their agent was. All coaching and management personnel with that same agent were fired.
