Patty IS turning into a legit NBA player

His defense is pretty bad, he lacks strength and lateral quickness, but at least he’s smart. He makes a ton of smart plays that don’t show up on a box score and I haven’t really appreciated them until now.

One example was last night he got a pass in the corner and looked open but a defender was closing on him and kicked the ball to CJ who was even more open for the better shot. I guess that play does show up as an assist but it was just a smart play.

In college he played PF as a senior against much bigger guys so even though he’s overmatched, he still finds a way to affect shots. He did that with Beal a few times. He’d get beat but still found a way to get in the way just enough. And I trust him to make an open shot, so he fits with the starters. He’s the closest replacement we have for Crabbe right now so until we upgrade, or Aminu comes back, I’m ok with him playing heavy minutes.

Wow I just defended Connaughton fuck everything.

I agree, Pat C looks like he has more to his game than just shooting, although its questionable how good is he at doing those things... I need to see him drive in the paint more, so I could form an opinion

but he looks small and unathletic to me, maybe Im wrong, well see

His draft class voted him as most athletic going into his rookie season.

I think he's good enough till we find someone better. But given our few player acquisition options that may not happen. He's proven he belongs. So "It's Pat!"

Since being drafted Patty never played like he belonged in the league.

His rise to an NBA player is very Crabbe-esque.

Yeah. It took him around three years to grow into the league. Man. You would almost think a full minor league/academy system would benefit a small market team like the Blazers. But why should we fuck with the draft when thst has worked so well? Waka waka!

He’s been a pleasant surprise to me. He was horrible in summer league.

I think I'm the only Pat backer here. I don't know why, but I think he'll make the same kind of 3rd year jump that Crabbe saw. I think he becomes a legit bench rotation guy this season.

My quote is from October, before the season started.

Pat Connaughton?

October? Man, so far behind the times. Here's one from me from April:

I think he could potentially develop into a much cheaper Allen Crabbe replacement. Remember, it wasn't until his 3rd year that Crabbe "broke out", which unfortunately led to that ridiculous contract. If anything, Connaughton has shown more in his first two seasons than Crabbe did.

And one from May.

I doubt if the Blazers release Connaughton. I think the coaching staff and his teammates like the way he fits in with the team and the offensive schemes. When he was pressed into duty, he seemed to fit in just fine. At ~$1.5 million, I think they are grooming him as a potential cheap Crabbe replacement. As long as he can knock down the wide open catch and shoot 3, (which he has shown he can do in a limited sample size), I think he's actually better than Crabbe. He's a better rebounder and better passer. He's less one-dimensional than Crabbe. So far, through two seasons, his career trajectory mimics Crabbe's very closely. It was during Crabbe's third season that he started to get significant minutes. If we can move Crabbe, this could be that season for Connaughton.

There are several more going all the way back to before the trade deadline. Back then, I was mocked by the Crabbe fanbois for having the audacity to even suggest that the baseball player could possibly replace "the second best 3-point shooter in the entire league". The mocking continued during summer league and the preseason, but it didn't dissuade me. I'm not the least bit surprised by Pat's success, I saw it coming a mile away.

It’s okay. I will gladly continue to mock you.

Been a Patty C. fan all along. He played PF his senior year in college and did a solid job while being undersized all year. The guy just flat out plays ball. He works hard. He's tough. He doesn't listen to you bitches. He has it between the ears.

And he had his pic taken with UCD. He's been solid since the day this pic was taken.

Pat is this years Nurkic for me... a breakout player to get excited about. I think he sticks as our starting SF. He really opens things up on offense with his shooting and that’s what we need. Harkless and Aminu are way too inconsistent shooting and don’t get respect from other teams

You were definitely on it. I only quoted my old post because it said the exact same thing that these posters are now saying. It seemed pertinent to the conversation. Don't worry, the long term Chili P backers know who the others are.

It’s almost like...the Blazers...know how to develop talent!!!

Wait a minute, so you’re telling me when the Blazers don’t play their younger players and choose to bring them along slowly and acclimate to the league at their own pace it actually works?!

What a mind-blowing concept...

We would take a player development more seriously around here if the Blazers wouldn't constantly blow their own horn about it every five minutes....

He may be the most mentally tough player on the team after Dame. That's saying something.

Mental toughness is how you win.

I've believed in Pat since his SL after his rookie season. I am a little impressed at how nicely he's acclimating to starting and playing major minutes.

I didn't think he had it in him. It would be great if he proves me wrong as these last two games were great.

*The Blazers know how to develop guards.

The progress of Vonleh/Meyers has been underwhelming at best.

It would be good though if for once we get value returned by our draft picks before the 3rd season. I think many teams do that while we haven't figured it out yet.
