According to Dallas police, officers responded to a call about a shooting at an apartment at about 3:20 a.m. Saturday morning. The resident of the apartment said an individual had kicked open his front door and entered his apartment. The resident, who had been asleep, retrieved a handgun when he heard the individual. After calling out and not receiving an answer, the resident fired his gun at the individual, who left the apartment and collapsed in the breezeway. The individual was transported to the hospital, where he died.

Dallas police told ESPN it does not appear that DeJean-Jones and the resident of the apartment knew each other previously.

NBA player Bryce Dejean-Jones was shot and killed early Saturday after he broke into a Dallas apartment he believed was his girlfriend’s and instead startled a man he didn’t know, according to police and his agent.

Management at Camden Belmont sent an email to residents that said Dejean-Jones had been trying to get into the apartment of an “estranged acquaintance” and “inadvertently broke into the wrong apartment.”

ESPN reported that the acquaintance was the mother of Dejean-Jones’ child.


Nichols, the agent, told CNN in a statement that the NBA player was in Dallas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter’s first birthday. He said Dejean-Jones was visiting her new apartment for the first time and, when he came back to the apartment later that night, he went to the unit directly below hers.

Dejean-Jones, his agent said, was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

It's tragic, what's more tragic is that just getting signed in the NBA he kicked in somebody's door in the middle of the night...no matter the reason, that's a high risk choice and he paid the ultimate price for it.

He was probably on shrooms. I had a buddy from high school that did the same, but he didnt kick down doors. He just creeped on an apartment with a woman on shrooms. In a non threatening way. Cops were called and shot him. Dude was 5 ft 10, 135 lbs. Not a physical threat and they still shot him and killed him.

To me, this situation screams that he was on something and not right in the mind.
