mazon has decided to take down New York subway advertisements for its streaming series "The Man in the High Castle" amid complaints about the use of symbols similar to those used by Germany and Japan during World War II.

Metropolitan Transit Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz said Tuesday that Amazon had decided to end the promotion, which includes seat wraps on one train and 260 subway station posters.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The ads promote a new series that depicts an alternate reality in which Germany and Japan won World War II and occupy parts of the United States.

Good grief people are becoming so overly sensitive about EVERYTHING. This reminds me of the story about the judge in Oregon who had a historical picture of Adolf Hitler among other WWII memorabilia on the wall in the courthouse. People flipped.

Are we so sensitive now that we can't even see these images without losing our shit? They're not promoting the ideals. It's an ad campaign for an alternate reality TV show. I really hate what this country is becoming.

I'm sorry but I'm not okay with this at all, and apparently they knew it wasn't okay too otherwise they wouldn't have changed the Swastika.

If you are a fan of posting Nazi imagery in public view then may I suggest putting some Nazi symbols on your car. When people get pissed at you just go ahead and tell them they are being overly sensitive. To hell with them if their mother/brother/sister/father/wife/husband died in a concentration camp, right?

Society may be getting overly sensitive, but it's also becoming overly stupid. The fact that someone thought this was a good idea is testament to that fact.

How is that the same thing? It's an ad for a TV show about Nazis....

It's not like some random person put a swastika on their car and now they're upset because it caused an adverse reaction. It's a show where the central theme is based on Germany winning the war and successfully invading the US. How else are they supposed to convey that image without using WWII era German imagery?

You're right it's not like you putting a Swastika on your car, its like the city put a Swastika on your car regardless of if you wanted them to or not.

I also think its hilarious that they wouldn't allow an advertisement for Womens underwear, but this is okay.

Just another example of how this country is fucked up in the sense that Violence is good, but our bodies are BAD BAD BAD!

No you're right, its like the city put a Swastika on your car regardless of if you wanted them to or not.

So you're saying the show shouldn't advertise at all? No television? No internet? No posters? The mere thought of the existence of the Nazi Reich is so upsetting that we must white wash it away from existence. We can't allow people to be bothered by the sight of German imagery from that era because it might upset them.

Are you part of that generation that wants the government to regulate speech?

I'm not even going to sit and get into an "Indiana is gonna trade Paul George" style argument over this with you.

I like to make my voice heard on subjects such as this. But I refuse to get into pissing matches that many opt to participate in on these OT threads.

But to answer your question - There are plenty of other ways to advertise the show that don't involve using Nazi symbols.

I'm not even going to sit and get into an "Indiana is gonna trade Paul George" style argument over this with you. Again if you have no problem with posting Nazi symbols in public then please go put some on your car, or stop being a hypocrite.

Gotcha. You're the type of person that wants to white wash history. Cool.

We aren't talking about a bunch of Neo Nazis waving a flag. We're talking about a period piece program that is attempting to show what America would look like if Germany had won the war. It is meant to be thought provoking and emotionally charged. If you are so sensitive that you can't even see these images without becoming upset, then you are part of the problem. They aren't promoting the ideology or glorifying the imagery, they are attempting to give a glimpse into an alternate reality.

THEY ARE PUTTING NAZI SYMBOLS ON THE AMERICAN FLAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ZOMG! Not the American flag!1!!!!1!!!11

They didn't use a swastika. They used the Eagle and the Iron Cross. Germany STILL uses the Iron Cross to this day, so that's not exactly a "Nazi Symbol."

I deleted the post for a reason.... You can stop now, thanks.

I was watching a piece on Hitler and the Nazis on The History Channel recently.

My wife walked in and made me turn it off because it was offensive.

Does the word context mean anything to you?

Also what's wrong with you? You are being antagonistic just because you can be.

This is literally a thread created to debate this topic.... and you're getting upset and emotional about debating the topic. If you don't want to discuss whether the imagery should be used, then feel free to not participate.

And you were the one who decided to bring up the Paul George thing for no reason. :dunno:

You are posting images which have nothing to do with the Nazis in an attempt to make a mockery of my opinion, and looking like an utter jackass in the process. The Paul George mention was because that situation went just like this one did. You seem to have trouble accepting when someone does not share your opinion. Let me help you out, you can't change the minds of others, you can only control your own opinions. If my beliefs are what is so wrong with society then take solace in the fact that my way of thinking is my responsibility and mine alone.

You are free to think the way you want to, and I am well within my right to hold a different opinion.

You said they put Nazi images on the American flag and I was posting images to show that you were wrong. The Iron Cross is not a Nazi image. They still use it today.

The Paul George argument, as you call it, was another example of you getting upset because I disagree with you and rather then continue to argue the point, you complain about me. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

So what's the point of posting on the forum if you have your opinion, I have my opinion, and nobody is going to change anyone's mind? The issue isn't whether those images affect you. They're SUPPOSED to affect you. The issue is whether they should be allowed to use those images to promote a show about that subject.

This isn't about holding a different opinion.... you're free to think what you want, but Amazon had to take these images down because they were being publicly ridiculed. At that point it's no longer about opinion, and it's about how political correctness is affecting our society. That's not an issue that can be left alone.

First: Context
Second: I come here to talk hoops with other fans.

Fonz, do you feel the issue is marketing, that they shouldn't have used the symbols in the commercials but it would be OK to use during the program? Should they have given up some realism and not used them at all, instead create some fictional logo? Or is it the show itself and nothing to do with imagery that you find offensive. Don't worry, I'm going to be debating you, just curious about your opinion.

Realistically, how could you have this show about a Nazi occupation of America without those images?

I feel they are well within their right to use whatever symbols they want to on their show, as it is someone's personal choice as to whether or not they watch it. People shouldn't have to choose whether or not to take the subway because they post Nazi symbols on the trains.

I can't tell if you have a serious flaw in your thought process or if you are just trying to be antagonistic.

On one hand you say there is nothing offensive about the images because they don't have to do with the Nazis and are still used today, on the other hand you say they couldn't have a show about Nazi occupation in America without those images. You sit and talk about how the iron cross is not a nazi image, and completely ignore the parteiadler.

What if I were to tell you some Native Americans think the American Flag can be offensive because it was flown by soldiers that murdered their ancestors, including women and children. Should the American Flag be censored like the Iron Cross because it's offensive to some people?

And you never answered my question. How are they supposed to advertise for the show? Billboards and poster boards are a huge part of advertising for films and TV shows. So without using any symbols at all that are somewhat tied to WWII Germany, how do you convey the idea of the story?

I would like to point out that they didn't use a Swastika, which is the paramount image of the Nazi party, and the Iron Cross, as I pointed out, predates Hitler and is still used by the German military today.

I didn't say they have nothing to do with Nazis. The Iron Cross is an old symbol of the German military. The Red Baron had an Iron Cross on his plane from WWI. Some people choose to affiliate any and all German imagery with the Nazi party, and with the atrocities that were committed during that war. The sad thing is that the swastika predates the Nazi party by a few thousand years or so. That symbol is essentially dead because of one man.

The German government and the people of Germany are the most hypersensitive group when it comes to anything related to Nazis, and yet they still use the Iron Cross. Like Santeesioux said, many bad things have been done while under the American flag, and yet we still proudly fly it.

Honest question, does the symbol bother you so much that you change the channel if it's on TV or turn the page if you see it in a book?

I don't want to add to a pissing match, but after watching the show, I'm kinda glad this topic came up. The show wasn't bad, but I I have admit that I was surprisingly uncomfortable with the use of Nazi AND Japanese symbols and uniforms. I realize it's fiction and the war ended 70 years ago, but the evil perpetrated by those two powers cost tens of millions of lives and scarred at least as many more. All these years later, it is still so visceral. Literally one of my first thoughts was to wonder how those actors could bring themselves to even put those costumes on. Yeah, it's a well paying job to them, and Hollywood has been cranking out WWII movies forever. But this time around, "Americans" were wearing those uniforms and acting as the Nazis did. Maybe that's what stuck in my craw. Because we actually have American citizens (admittedly a very small majority) who would love to see this country go that way. Whatever the reason, I didn't like the feeling and I'm certainly not going to apologize for it. I am a huge, well read WWII buff and it still discomfited me. And for what it's worth, I do NOT want to see Nazi symbolism displayed in public either. If it gives even one individual in a million the twisted idea that Nazism is acceptable, that's one too many.....

Seems like an overreaction to me, it's fiction. When the new wolfenstein came out a big portion of their marketing had nazi symbols and the such because it is, wait for it, the plot...

If it were up to me, Amazon wouldn't have to take down the ads, but could if they wanted to.

Amazon took down the ads for good reason. Free speech in action. They spoke, the people spoke.
