[Pick #11] A case for Meyers Leonard

and you think that is going to IMPROVE in the NBA?

I don't like Meyers Leonard at all...He is you typical, looks the part but can't act\play for shit...

He has got all the measureables that I am sure Chad Buchanan just loves....but when you watch him play, he seems incapable of capitalizing on them.....

Maybe? But that's the fun of the draft, we don't know really how 90% of these guys are going to turn out (actually not true, because we know 75% of them are going to suck).

not to butt in but jeez how many times did you watch him at illinois?

Several.

The problem I have is when guys around here admit that they don't watch college hoops, don't put any kind of discussion into college hoops when its brought up on this board. But then, as soon as the draft roll's around they act like experts and try and dispute and refute prospects like they know anything about the prospect outside of the month long hype brigade that draft websites give them.

Moral of the story:

Don't get bossy on prospect prognosticating when you just found out about a guy a month ago.

i can get behind this

but watching a guy play 2 games doesnt exactly make you a scout either...you can find out nearly all there is to know just reading most draft sites and getting their experienced take on a prospect, and then watching a few highlite videos on youtube

I watch more college than pro outside of Blazer games.

Every player in the draft is going to have strengths and weaknesses on those sites. So why bash guys if you haven't seen them play in live action and are just going by scouts take. Obviously every guy in the draft is going to have pro's and con's.

I think I used to fall prey to this trap a lot in past years, where I would be 'certain' about guys (good or bad) and at most only watched them play maybe 3 or 4 times (when I was much more into college hoops). At best I can say I get a gut feeling about some guys when I watch them play and the hit rate is about 30% on them actually turning into serviceable NBA players or busting. There are far more guys that I never notice who turn into good players.

There are too many variables in player development, motivation, systems and trying to translate what you see at one level to the next. It's still fun to talk about and offer opinions and impressions, but there's nothing to go to the mat over.

Exactly. Which is why I don't understand why some get irate in here if someone thinks Leonard will be a good pick.

i like the way leonard runs through cones, and lifts heavy things, seems like a good pick

Give me a break, you are no effing expert either....So you watched a couple of games and that makes your OPINION carry more than others? Bullshit.

I have seen him play, I know people who have played against him and they don't think much of him either....and from what I have seen of him and from what other scouts whose opinions probably matter more than everyone on this message board combined his future as an NBA player is not very promising...

...the guy has got a good NBA body, he is tall and he is athletic, they all say that...but after that, if you read more than just the headlines and then you watch him play you start to see all the typical big man red flags...mechanical movements, no real post game (except for an inconsistent hook shot), can get pushed around on defense...players with those sorts of traits usually end up as journeyman centers like Chris Mihm, they don't become all stars, let alone top 1/2 of the NBA starters...and even if he could by some miracle become that player it won't be for several years and most likely on another team...like Spencer Hawes.....

POR can do better....much better at #11....

b\c he is fucking Nolan Smith ver2.0

I expect this kind of bullshit bad pick from Buchanan but not from Olshey....

He's been climbing into the top 10 on most boards. Not sure what that has to do with Nolan Smith who wasn't even predicted to go in the 1st round.

hopefully he participates in some group workouts, hes the kinda guy who is going to look better than he is doing individuals...if he brings it against the rest of the best, that will prove something

cone running is not what we need from a center

He was already here...and several people who saw part of the workout stated that Zeller looked better....

Is he? I didn't realize the draft was today or that the players were already "locked in" to certain picks? And frankly I don't really care if some other team reaches (Thabeet) for him, it just means a better player drops to POR....

He's just not a white stiff

[video=youtube;QK7K2aYpoKI]

Chris Mihm played like he had ankle weights on.

He looks like a more athletic/agile Robin Lopez (whom NBAdraft.net compares him to)...

Who are the several people. Enlighten me.

he is def not a stiff, not sure anyone said that though

He does remind me of somebody ... a more athletic Roy Hibbert? (when he was at Gerogetown)

His case (not his game) kind of reminds me of that Vucevic kid that went to Philly in the middle of the first last year after quickly rising up the board as the process went on. I thought that guy was going to be a colossal bust, but it just goes to prove you never know.

totally forgot about that guy, he wasnt that bad actually

Vucevic has a soft jumper. He shot 38% from 3 land.

Right, that's why I made the disclaimer that I wasn't comparing their games, just their situations and maybe the perception of each coming into the league -- a tendency to bias against white centers.

Very true. What seperates Leonard from say Cole Aldrich in my opinion is that he's skilled and athletic. Aldrich looked so methodical at Kansas.

i never trust a person with a backwards name, he should be leonard meyers
