This country has lost its damn mind

Gary Dolphin is the play by play guy for Iowa. He has been there for 22 years.

The other night, after a 1 point loss, after the game he said some dude from Maryland, named Bruno Fernando, who is 6'10" 240 lbs......and black, was like King Kong out there.

Fernando had 11 rebounds and helped seal the win with his physical presence on the boards.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE WE DOING? This country is in serious trouble.

Weve lost our minds in that we were an incredibly racist country and are taking an extreme turn against that. While I agree in the sense I dont think he meant it in a racist way. We also dont have a great way to actually judge intent and in order to try to seperate ourselves from the crimes of years past find ourselves having to be very sensitive to things that can be contrued as racist. I get that it can be frustrating when someone says or does something they didnt mean to be racist, and is villified as being racist, it can be alarming and seem like an over reaction. However sometimes when youve been on one extreme of an issue you have to overshoot in order to eventually find a balance.

Who should he have said? The incredible Hulk?

If so, most iterations of The Hulk were pretty non verbal sooooooo....not cool.

I do wonder how Jimmy Kimmel is still on what with the blackface Karl Malone skit still out there.

America is the most inclusive country in the world and there is nobody that's a close second.

The rest of the world's countries are either segregatory or monoracial in structure.

I've never understood the offense taken at being compared to King Kong.

He's the f'ing king of the jungle. The most powerful force in nature.

Clever as a fox, or stubborn as an ass are about the best animal comparisons I ever got.

You never got ugly as a duck?

A big monkey is the sort of thing racists love to use to describe a Black person.

Huh???
Lol. Canada is britains minimi. (With vancouver being a little asia) There is hardly anything of a diverse culture up there compare to here. They arent anything like the melting pot we are.

Wait. I just realized that the most common term you could use is man amongst boys.

Can't say that either

You have the vision of an eagle, the mind of an owl, and the grace of a swan. Clearly, this man is for the birds!

That is porch monkey. Not king kong....

Are we going to generalize everything now???

Its getting dark out tonight.... the night should file a suit for me calling it dark.

What ever happened to stick and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me???

I know some words can cause issues, but name calling will not.

Liable and slanderous statements should garner more attention than racial slang if you ask me.

Wow, this story caught traction here. I live 20 miles from the University of Iowa. This is all the rage the last couple days.

There is a little more to the story. Dolphin is a legend here but he does not get along with Fran, the bball coach. Dolphin was suspended for two games earlier this season for getting caught criticizing a current player and the kind of recruits Iowa bball gets on a hot mic.

Dolphin did apologise after the fact for subconsciously saying it. I've mentioned it before, there is alot of racism in Iowa, not so much in racist acts, but in words and thoughts. I heard all the unkind animal comparisons of black people growing up.

And here we're stuck with two painfully unfunny nitwits yammering on endlessly about sharks.

But he didn't call him a big monkey. Had he, he should be fired. He described a player dominating the paint and grabbing the final rebound in traffic as King Kong
The entirely mythical King Kong was, in fact, a big monkey.
No racists think of White people as some kind of monkey but nearly all White racists love to describe Black people as some kind of monkey.

Even when they play great basketball.

Yep. It was racism.

King Kong is a monster, just as the kid was on the boards

There's a teeny tiny chance that it wasn't meant to be racist but I highly doubt it. Everyone with an IQ over 40 knows you don't refer to Black people as any kind of monkey. So, I agree, it as almost certainly racism.

No, there is a 99 percent chance it wasn't racism. There's a 99.999999 percent chance that people don't always stop and think about the racism rules when winging live broadcasts. There are no scripts don't ya know?

King Kong is racist now? Since when?

What happened to all of those years of people calling Joel Przybilla the Vanilla Gorilla? Selective Racism?

That one is pretty obvious. A lot has been made of it through the years.

This thread reminded me of the King Kong speech by Denzel Washington in Training Day.

It's not that when you call someone who is not a Black any sort of large monkey. It's when you refer to a Black person as any kind of monkey. For many years now racists have compared Black Americans to monkeys. Why, I remember when Michelle Obama was referred to as a monkey.

Lanny, I have to call you out on this. Plenty of guys (of various races) I played basketball used terminology like King Kong, Beast, Monster, etc. to describe themselves or others as being powerful in sports. It happened all the time in high school (Benson Polytechnic) and it was not meant as racist in that context.

I've never heard of it except as a racist comment, in my life. I would never do it myself.

Pretty obvious difference between someone describing a guy dominating a basketball game and someone making an obviously derogatory insult about Michelle Obama.

Well, the guys I went to school with were quite colorful. Some white, asian, and black. It was educational and quite fun being able to laugh and be ourselves with each other. We never thought of calling each other racist names. We just weren't that way.

However, I understand and respect your view being that you lived through those tough times during the 60s and 70s.
