The NBA dunk contest has become one of the most over-hyped events in all of professional sports. Blake Griffin jumped over the hood of a KIA Optima to dunk. The Optima is a whole 72 inches wide, that is an AMAZING 6' feet. Really amazing considering that the foul line is 13 feet from the basket. Now add in the fact that the Optima is a whole 57 inches off the ground at the peak of the roof. His knees are about even with the rooftop of the car. Overall it was the BEST live KIA commercial in the history of the world, but as a dunk?

i seriously cannot stand griffin. i just dont see the hype with him. nice player sure.... but the nba, tnt, espn act like hes the savior. it really is vomit level. its right up there with okc love fest. my god half of espn was crying about serge ibaka not getting a better score on twitter. no joke. the night before it was a harden love fest. its amazing OKCs luck. of course someone pulls out of rookie/sophmore game and of course harden is the immediate choice. even last night hollinger is pimping westbrook on twitter to win some silly contest.

its at the point where if you can watch an nab broadcast for 5 minutes without hearing OKC or Griffin... then it must be very big news day in the NBA. I cant take it anymore.

I loved the dunk contest this year. Some of the dunks were pretty awesome (McGee's double dunk was beastly but I loved ibaka's take off from behind the FT line the best) but I think the players really got that most of the dunks that can be done have been done so you have to make it a complete entertainment experience not just a cool dunk. Griffins dunk of jumping over the car was cool but it was the hood which a lot of players can jump over, if it had been the top of the roof it would deserved the hype. As it was it was a real cool dunk to watch but it was the build up to it which made the dunk fun to watch.

Loved the double hoop dunk. Griffin's only impressive dunk was the elbow dunk. I find it funny that Griffin got no grief for his multiple attempts at the lob off the side of the backboard, yet they gave Rudy Fernandez a ton of hate when he had the same issues. Blake's dunk gets a 46, Rudy's dunk that was better got a 42 and was bashed the whole time he was making his attempts. Why do they even have 4 people in the dunk contest when it is a predtermined final?

I liked DeRozan's dunk the best. Seriously underrated.

I did not want to watch it because it's usually boring, but I had nothing else to do.

Best of the night:

1. McGee 2 basket, 2 ball.
2. Derozan's reverse.
3. Griffin's first attempt (a miss that he changed for his actual make. It was a sort of reverse. stop. 360 windmill, that he changed into a regular 360 that half the people in the NBA can do).
4. Ibaka's FT line.
5. Griffin Elbow.

The gimmicks were getting tiresome, especially the car thing. It could have been decent if he jumped over the middle of it. And Kenny Smith needs to go.

This really is sick.

...entertaining, as it was meant to be. I enjoyed it. I thought it was one of the better contests over the past few years. I don't mind the props, although the Kia dunk wasn't that spectacular. He should've jumped over the roof. I think McGee could hang by his armpit. If he would've done that for his last dunk, he would've "shocked the world" with the victory. I also think there are some dunks left which have not been seen and can be done. I've got some ideas...

Ibaka should have strapped that kid to his back and let him get the toy while he dunked.

KIA is a huge NBA sponsor. I think Griffin's dunk with the car was totally set up and the contest was fixed so he'd be in the finals and give KIA some major exposure. As Sug said, the dunk wasnt even that impressive at all. I think most guys on the Trail Blazers roster could do that.

My list:
1. McGee 2 basket, 2 ball.
2. Ibaka's FT line.
3. Derozan's reverse
4. Griffin's first attempt
5. McGee 3 balls

I love the dunk contest, I just wish it wasn't rigged. I thought DeRozan was the best of the night. He should have made the Finals. Every year it seems like the best one doesn't make the finals. Then, in the Finals, its just a popularity contest. Griffin could have failed on both his dunks and he still would have won.

Seriously... the only thing missing from the dunk contest is someone hitting someone else with a chair... they go down.... and then magically as if they have eaten a can of spinach, they get back up and do a spectacular dunk. Hell, maybe someone should incorporate the WWE into this. The Rock could come out, beat the hell out of the dunker, they get up, punch him in the face and dunk the ball. Someone call Stern's marketing team.

The NBA Dunk Contest has become....Rigged. After the the over the car dunk....or should i say over the "official car of the NBA" car dunk, McGee knew that he never had a chance to win and that Blake Griffin was supposed to win before the contest even started. So he just threw down a basic dunk and walked away. I thought there was alot of creativity this year, but in the end Griffin's staged finale was always meant to be the photo-finish that the NBA was looking for.

At least we didn't have Magic proclaiming that "the dunk contest is back!" for the umpteenth year in a row.

Frankly the NBA should condense the entire weekend into the 3p contest, the dunk contest, and the game, all within a four hour block on Sunday night. Everything else is exhausting and superfluous. The rookie/sophomore game is arguably worse than the Pro Bowl.

i enjoyed most of the dunks that seemed to get no love.
the thing that kills it for me is the repeat attempts, it does get kinda sad....
the 2 ball one, if that had gone in first time - or the teddy bear one, would have brought the house down.

the car was weak as hell, over the bonnet of a small car that happens to be a key sponsor - gee, how classy.

The dunk contest became garbage once they put a clock on it and said they had 100X to get a dunk right! Back in the day you had 1 miss allowed per round. When it takes 20 times to finish a dunk, it's lame!

predetermined, rigged, a joke... all work well

McGee could have dunked behind the half court line and Griffin would have still won. The car dunk with the fucking gospel choir made me feel like I'd eaten way too many cheetos

STOMP

It's gotten to the point where the actual spectacular dunks get no crowd reaction and thus, make it seem lame, when they don't have any theatrics or props.

staged.

They had too many do-overs, and the lack of penalties for using the do-overs. I guess you'd call it the Rudy Fernandez/Chris Andersen

Agreed. It was obvious Blake was going to win (his dunks were impressive, but they acted like he did stuff never seen before. It wasn't that impressive. Take out the car, and it's a routine dunk, barely a 40), and imho, you could tell McGee knew it for his last dunk. like inside he was thinking "fuck this. just get it over and done with"

I seen a street player named Demetrius "hooks" Mitchell dunk over a car before, and he was 5'8". So not really impressed by Griffin's car dunk.

I thought DeRozan had the best dunks. His first one got a low score but it had a lot of difficulty to pull off. Don't know why they gave such a low score.

Yeah, instead of Magic it was Kenny Smith and Dwight Howard. That's a phrase the NBA might look into what the meaning is. It was "back" like 2 years after they got rid of it.

in agreement as well. Griffins first attempt was more impressive than the make. Derozen's Windmill crap was nasty.. the Live angle didnt make it look that impressive, but the side angles did. And Ibaka's was great and given Sh*t results.

Someone needs to do this.

while that is impressive.. I still feel compelled to say F AND 1 and the crap they have put into young kids' minds about what the game is about.

I started thinking the dunk contest was stupid when they started using a bunch of big men for it. Outside of Derozan, every dunker this year was a PF/C. Thats not exciting to me. I miss the days when it was guard and wings. I don't give a shit about seeing guys like Dwight Howard dunk.

did you see the show that Brent Barry hosted, where he ripped on Dwight Howards "dunk" where he just threw it in?

I think there is a growing backlash against the NBA for how things are being done.

It might be seen through rose colored glasses, but you have the ASG being played at a city that doesn't even have an NBA team, it's being hosted in LA for the second time AND it's turning into a big MTV/Entertainment Tonight/Hollywood Gossip show.

How about you make it for NBA fans, not the shit they do it for?
