Rachel Richardson is a 19 year old star volleyball player at Duke. Her team played a road game at BYU. She is the only Black starter on either team. Throughout the game she was taunted with racial slurs, n word, and threats. Game officials, BYU coaches, bystanders did nothing.
One person was later banned from BYU sports although many more than one person participated in abuse. Afterwards athletic director read a written statement that BYU has zero tolerance for what they had just tolerated and said visitors should be treated with love and respect. Unless they are Black or gay.
Richardson said she was helped by her team having gone through A Long Talk, an educational series on roots of racism and how to help prevent and end racism. Unfortunately, this series is being banned in schools in Texas, Florida and elsewhere since it can make whit people uncomfortable and besides, racism is no longer a problem, right?
unless this written statement actually said “except Blacks and Gays”, this reads very confusingly and makes it sound like they wrote this as a statement.
Just sayin.
