I'm sure you've all heard by now that the Rocket's offer to Asik was back-loaded with a 15 million dollar season in year 3 to mess with the Bulls.

This got me thinking:

1.) Is there anything we can do to include a poison pill in Hibbert's offer sheet? Or is a max contract simply a max contract, and there's no wiggle room? Is there at least some kind of signing bonus we could include?

2.) The Blazers should be prepared for Minnesota or whoever signs Batum to an offer sheet to include a poison pill. I wonder what it would be?

I think best we can do is a signing bonus payable on offer being official(matched or declined) along with whole first year salary that would require Simon to come up with about 17 million in cash within 3 days, which could be awfully tough for him. Awfully tough for a lot of owners. I believe most of his money is in real estate. Don't know how quickly he comes up with somehting like that.

Anyhow, as I understand it, Hibbert's deal can be frontloaded for ~$18 million the first year with a cash 'poison pill' that must be paid this summer.

If that's the case, then I'd expect Paul Allen to authorize that type of deal.

Why are you becoming a troll?

No shit. There's nothing about nicknames in this thread.

Sly's post came moments after mine. In this short thread. Makes me somewhat understand your rant a little bit more. Whatever gets post counts up, I suppose.

What I don't get is how is the $18M determined?

How do we arrive at that max figure?

I tried to communicate this with you via PM, but apparently we need to take up open threads and hijack them.

Sorry my iPhone is retarded and I lefty computer at my office, so my messages a are bitch on here (my settings are an issue on this phone).

The post count was fantastic today prior to your trolling, and I didn't notice any One v. One crap until BG entered the Hibbert thread. Yet here comes along you to escalate the petty bullshit.

For the record, I wasn't trolling. Just thought the nicknames were weak. So was Cooney. It ain't personal. Sorry for being honest.

Guys I was just kidding around. I didn't mean to offend, insult or hijack a thread. I think it's great that you two are trying to work out things via PM.

I don't feel that I escalated anything. It was just one post. Hardly trolling. But if you feel that I insulted you I apologize.

Im insulted and humiliated.

That's what Mrs. HCP says every time I leave her (so I thought I'd see if the guilt-trip worked here).

no no no

asik is an early bird free agent, so the most he can be offered in the first two years of a deal is the MLE. the 3rd and 4th years can be up to the max. its a way to ensure that a team will not lose a surprisingly productive player after two years, in case they are over the cap, they can still use their mle to retain them

i would bet the farm the hibbert offer was very frontloaded and or large cash payment upfront

as far as i know, minny hasnt shown a proclivity for throwing their money around so i dont anticipate anything of that sort, i guess i could be wrong though

I'd poison pill the Hornets for Eric Gordon.

It's worth a shot!

to the point, Hibbert (as someone coming off a rookie contract who did not have multiple all-star and is going to a different team, even in a S&T) is entitled per the CBA to $9,000,000 or 25% of the total salary cap, whichever is greater. (It's the 25%, which would be ~12.9M) He can also get up to 4.5% raises each year, and can have a 4-year contract. However, a player coming off his rookie scale contract is eligible to sign for 30% of the cap if he appeared in two All-Star Games, was named to an All-NBA Team twice, or was named MVP. This was dubbed the "Derrick Rose Rule" after the 2011 MVP.

Therefore, assuming the cap is 58.044M like it was last year, Hibbert's starting salary can be $12,922,194, with 4.5% raises ($581,498.73) each year. So his cap number (and salary without any signing bonuses) would be $12,922,194, $13,442,034, $13,961,874 and $14,481,714 for a total of 4/$53,807,816. CBA states that 10% of the total contract value can be a signing bonus for a RFA (15% for other contracts) while still maintaining the non-bonus cap numbers. Therefore, $5,480,782 of his total can be applied to first-year salary, making the cash Roy gets in 2012-13 $17,402,976. New CBA states that 50% of salary can be paid upfront (prior to Oct. 1--it used to be 80%). So the most "toxic" offer we can make is for Roy to get a max contract, max signing bonus, and max upfront money, meaning that IND's owner would have to shell out $8,701,488 cash to Roy on July 15.

EDIT: Checked with Storyteller...the bonus can't factor in the 4.5% raises. I changed the numbers accordingly.

the 25% thing is off, only eligible for roughly 12.9.

Where does that come from? You're saying 12.9, Hollinger's saying 13.7...afaik, it's 25% of salary cap .

EDIT: Just found the new CBA faq. They use 42.14% of BRI vice the 44.74%. So your 12.9M is right if the cap stays the same. Hollingers 13.7 must assume a 61.6M salary cap if the proportions are the same, which doesn't sound right.

Are there any other early bird free agents we can make an "Asik" offer too? Jeremy Lin is one I can think of.

The great thing about these offers is they appear as $5 million in year 1 $5 million in year 2 then $15 million in year 3 to the matching team. That is a horrific luxury tax bill when the escalating taxes hit, for a team like NY that is already in luxury tax territory it could cost them $50 million in year 3 to keep Lin!

But the offer only counts as $8 million per year for all three seasons to the team signing the contract. So if we make an offer to one of these free agents the contract would be far more costly for the matching team then the signing team. But it still has to be an early bird free agent, usually a second round pick, that is worth having for $8 million per season. I can't think of any others and even the amazing Jeremy Lin might not be worth that much.

He made a joke.. And it was funny. Why so defensive? Being overly defensive is what starts all that type of stuff.

You missed another thread that SPD was referencing. I know, I should be used to being a target at this point. We hashed it out via PM.

Anyhow, poison the pill, because PA will pay for it this year.
