OT Police Shooting in ATL

I understand your bigger point, but what about the times when people aren't fighting cops and get killed?

or when a white person is basically doing this X 10, rams their car into the police car, and runs off and doesn't get shot?
I'm not talking about that at all. All that stuff is horrible. I'm talking about this case where this guy starts resisting to a legitimate arrest. Guy blew hot on a DUI and knew it and tried to get away and started fighting with the cops......in todays day and age after everything we have seen, you just can't do that. It will not end up good.

I completely agree, don't fight with the cops.

But there are laws on books for fighting with the cops.

If the police and/or the public are not in danger, the penalty for fighting with the cops should not be death.

I think that the guy stealing the cop’s taser and then pointing it at him as he was running away is what differentiates this incident from some of the others. Pointing a weapon, any weapon or facsimile thereof, at a cop is a good way to end up dead. The cop has to decide in an instant if his life is in danger and react accordingly. First question, is it the taser or did the guy maybe have a gun on him? Can you be certain before the guy fires? Second question, if it is the taser, if he shoots it at you and incapacitates you, what’s to prevent the guy or someone else from taking your gun and using it on you? Too many decisions in too short of a time span where a negative outcome could result in the officer’s death equals a high probability of the officer choosing to neutralize the threat.

All of that said, it was some pretty crappy police work that resulted in the cops losing control of the situation.

Good points, things happen fast. But you'd think cops was have it drilled into them to not shoot someone in the back. Seems if they were chasing someone and they felt they need to stop the guy hit him in leg or ass.

Cops deal with people who are drunk and belligerent every day. They should know non-lethal ways to cope.

It's not as easy as you think.

This!...cops are not human, and some are flawed and some more than others.

And the problem I have with some of the demonstrations and outcries and yadda yadda yadda, is the narrative from some that this is a good time to retaliate to cops...it's a bad move.

I know I'll catch some flack for saying this but here's a tip, don't try to fight a cop.

Yes, not all cops shoot.

And training does not always prepare people for real life situations whether you're a cop or not.

You can go to school that will teach how to back up a semi in a deserted parking lot but it does not prepare you how to drive on an interstate. You can buy a book on how to make mixed drinks but it does not prepare you for actually being a bartender in a high volume bar. Someone may change the oil in their wife's car but that doesn't make them a mechanic.

For the umpteenth time, pay cops/teachers/military for what their worth and you will attract a MUCH better product, and the results will likely improve exponentially.

Who makes the decision what they're worth...and, specifically, how much?

Who makes the decision what they're worth...and, specifically, how much?

Considerably more than the current standard, and nearly anyone could make that distinction/decision...well, unless of course, they are you.

America... is in over its head....

the only thing left is the fall of rome..

Crap, no pun intended, meant shot. Boo-boo.

actually....you may have come up with a less violent solution to riot control

hear me out....what if, instead of shooting bean-bag rounds and rubber pellets, the cops shot horse turds and rabbit pellets? I mean, if you were in a crowd and there were rounds of shit from mortars dropping on you....wouldn't you clear out right away? And imagine clouds of drone overhead dropping seagull poop. It might even be smart poop. I mean, Basset Hound shit is about the nadir of gross, a Gatling gun that could fire 1000 dog turds a minute would stop a riot in it's tracks. And Sly could finally be productive

I’ll bet he’s downing prune juice and looking for an agent to market his product.

“Drunk drivers are always arrested.”

Maybe that’s something that could change. In this age of camera phones and mobile internet access, why does someone who’s only moderately drunk have to be handcuffed and hauled off to jail? If there isn’t a record that shows up with a license search, take the person‘a photo and other information and do a mobile booking, impound the car and call for a cab to take them home.
Right or wrong it's what they do nationwide.
I had a friend at Tektronix who had a wonderful young son about 9. One early Sunday morning he got picked up by a soccer mom driving a van who, along with several other boys, was taken to early morning soccer practice. A drunk driver who was drinking all night Saturday night ran a light and broadsided the van killing my friend's wonderful and very bright young son. They don't fool around with drunk drivers for a reason.

I know that’s the standard practice, Lanny. I think most people are of the belief that some of the standard police practices need to be revisited. I am certainly not minimizing drunk driving as a problem, but I think there could be a set of standards that would allow for a mobile booking process in some cases. No prior DUII convictions, no outstanding arrest warrants, alcohol level below a set standard, no history of domestic abuse, and other appropriate limitations could be employed. Obviously, you take the car and you arrange to get the person sent home. All I know from watching the video is that everything was cool until they tried to put the cuffs on the guy. Some policies like I outlined above and the guy is at home with his family today trying to find a good attorney for his court date.

I am all for busting drunk drivers, but don’t make it a revenue game. One night years ago (on a Friday the 13th wouldn’t you know) I was driving home from a friend’s house in Oregon City. I had a a couple beers MUCH earlier in the evening and then switched to water. On the way home a car came hauling ass up behind me and then rode my ass aggressively until I was about a mile from home. Turns out it was a cop who then pulled me over for “touching the line” with my tire on a curve on Stafford Rd(!!??). He asked me if I had been drinking and I told him the truth. He then put me through the (truly inane) “sobriety tests” and then arbitrarily decided I was drunk (I most certainly was not. And why no portable breathalyzer???). The guy was a cheesedick from start to finish. He had to call a buddy for “back up”(????) and then couldn’t get the cuffs on (because he wasn’t doing it correctly) and had to ask his (clearly disgusted) buddy to do it (after claiming I was “struggling against” him). He then threw me in the back of the cruiser and (literally) hauled ass all the way back to Oregon City. The guy was driving WAY over the speed limit, all the while playing on his dash mounted computer. The moron was ALL over the road and when I commented on the irony of me being popped for DUI while he was acting in a far more unsafe manner (and that I was not buckled in) he got very pissy with me. When we got to the jail he couldn’t get the breathalyzer to work (despite the large sign next to the machine stating that their 2 way radios MUST be turned OFF before using the machine). The idiot was freaking out and asked another cop what was wrong. He too was clearly disgusted as he pointed out that the guy had his radio on. So we had to let the machine stabilize for another 20 minutes. In the end I blew 0.02. So they told me they’d finish processing me and turn me loose. They threw me in a very (VERY) crowded drunk tank (again, it was revenue night). They let me call my wife, who made the long drive at 3 am only to be told that I still needed to “sober up” before they’d release me. She then had to turn around, go home and come back 2 hours later. It was one on the most infuriating nights of my life and made it very clear that cops can do whatever the f**k they want with impunity. AND it cost me $400 in car retrieval fees. Had that cop been equipped with a mobile breathalyzer (and far, far better all around training than he apparently had) I’d have been on my way home quickly, $400 to the good and with a much better opinion of cops in general. And the dumbshit might have actually used his time to catch a driver or two who was actually impaired. And let’s face it.....if society was truly serious about cracking down on drunk driving of any kind, there’s be a fleet of patrol cars outside of every bar in America.....

That's the kind of crap that needs to get cleaned up. Now, just imagine that you were black and had been stopped in a poor part of town.

Seems like the decision to arrest him led to a needless escalation of this situation. Give him his ticket, tow his car so he can’t drive drunk, and call an Uber. So fricking stupid and tragic this guy is dead.
Common Sense 101

That cop qualifies as pure dick.

I have a friend of mine who was USMC and he got a facial injury from his artillery battery. A cop stopped him and he lowered all windows and put his hands on the top of the steering wheel. The cop was stunned. He said to the cop "I'm making this easy and helping you feel there is no threat." Then the cop realized he was worth a thank you for service and situation.
