What Should Portland Do If Dame Wants to Stay?

I wonder how many people change their mind on what's actually happened on and off the court.

As for me:
  • I was in favor of trading Dame before this season. I thought we were going to be mediocre again, and struggle to get into the playoffs. I thought that if we made it, we could advance a round (or maybe two!) because Dame and Simons are such good scorers that we could sneak up on teams.
  • I am still in favor of trading Dame. We were mediocre this year and missed the playoffs again. Dame is a year older and closer to his massive extension, but he's also a super-awesome player and should bring good value back in trade.
Some of you all:
  • Some people were opposed to trading Dame before this season. They either thought we could challenge for HCA and/or they thought we'd make a trade that would somehow balance the roster and make us more competitive.
  • Some people are still opposed to trading Dame. We did not challenge for HCA and/or make a trade that somehow balanced the roster and made us more competitive.
Some others:
  • Some people were opposed to trading Dame before this season. They don't care about winning as much as they care about his commitment to the city and the franchise and that he's fun to watch on any given night.
The latter group... that's cool. I get it. I don't have the same values as a fan as those people, but I get it.

The former group... it's insanity to me. It's like this year didn't happen, and the same arguments and sentiments are being expressed that were last offseason. Some of these folks would have traded the pick that became Sharpe, and/or they thought Grant would be a difference-maker. They had faith that Cronin's "work in progress" statements about building a winner with Dame had any substance. It didn't make much sense last summer, and it makes even less sense now that a whole season of real world evidence disproves it.

Yeah, injuries had nothing to do with this season….

lol.

pretty sure it can be done if both parties agree. That would be insane to not allow that.

"Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap (and cannot increase the player's salary beyond the maximum salary). A renegotiation can only be used to provide a salary increase -- players can't take a "pay cut" in order to create more cap room for the team."

Thats lame. Thanks though Wiz. I didnt know.

I don't believe the players unions allows it to happen. They don't want players pressed into giving away money already agreed to. This isn't two independent parties entering into an everyday contract; it specific contract law rules spelled out in the CBA which gives the NBA an antitrust exemption.

What season do injuries NOT play a part? When has Dame stayed healthy? When has Winslow stayed healthy? When has Nurk stayed healthy?

If everything went perfectly for the roster, of COURSE it would have been better. That's true of every roster in the NBA.

umm injuries are not black and white as you seem to indicate.
Put up the amount of games missed by our starters up to the all Star break compared to the top ten best record teams in the nba and get back to me. Until then, little substance to your post without equating injuries into the context.

I've never seen Dame make a shot like this!

Until last season the answer to your second question is always. Dame didn't have one season in his first 9 where he missed more than 9 games. So I guess that's when.

You have to wonder if he’s going to play another game for the Portland Trail Blazers,” Charania said. “I think this offseason is going to be one where Damian Lillard’s name is going to be at the forefront of a lot of trade discussions.”

What a load of shit. Talking without saying a damn thing. The guy is a... sham? Total fraud.

I really think Joe either gets shit done around the draft that makes this team competitive next season or Dame will ask to be traded and we will trade him. I hope that Joe making a trade or two that gets us closer to contention with Dame is the more likely thing but I can't blame Shams for saying speculating about it when a lot of the people who post in this forum don't think it's likely.

I think Dame is going to be willing to wait to see what happens with the draft, but if we're not able to make something happen.... I could see us trading him. We just clearly don't have the juice to contend and I'm not sure I see a path to get there while Dame is still in his prime.

I think the most likely scenario is that Dame has accepted that it might be impossible for Portland to build a contender in the next 3 years or so and he's OK with it

yeah, it's possible he'll ask out, but he's smart enough to know there would be no guarantee he'd ever play in the finals if he was traded

I think there are definitely multiple paths to get there but I don't know if Joe is capable or if the team wants to leverage all of their future picks to get there. I don't think Dame needs us to be betting favorites to win the title I just think he needs to see us as having the best chance at getting there that we've had since he's been here which again, I'm not sure current ownership and management is capable of doing that or even if they're seriously interested in it.

I guess we'll see in a few months.

That's also possible. I really don't have a good read on him at this point.

yeah, it's kind of difficult to get a read. I'm pretty sure though, that he'll really be reluctant to shift to a trade demand

I certainly can. What insider knowledge does he have? What is his source?

speculate?? How about report news instead of stir up gossipy drama? I can 100% blame him. This isnt reporting. This is fox/cnn news bullshit. We went through it last year. Shams wants to lead the bullshit charge this year. fuck that guy…

Shams was the asshole that said that the Blazers were forcing Payton to get Toradol shots in his abdomen. He said that and when it came out it was false he never printed a retraction. It was his false assertions in that article that was primary in leading the trashing of the Blazers...based upon lies and bad info

fuck shams
Yep and he never walked it back like a solid, quality reporter would do when found out he reported incorrectly. Fuck him.

We should be happy he's all in. Many would have bolted. No surrender in his bones. I doubt we ever see this loyalty again. Sure the dollars are great, but all top athletes get the dollars. But most don't hang around through the tough times. He has fortitude. I admire him so much for that.

In the second paragraph it says Dame underwent Abdomen surgery in February "Charania said on his podcast that Lillard, who underwent surgery for an abdominal injury in February". It is like they are combining some from last year and some from this year. I can only imagine how tired Dame is of dealing with this every year.

Now that Dame is shut down for remainder of year. Did we see Dame play his last game in Blazer uniform? As much as we all say he’s not going anywhere I think there’s still a decent chance he may have played his last game as a Blazer. Some things that might cause him to want to be traded.

1. Blazers don’t move up in draft
2. Cronin isn’t able to pull off a trade for difference maker
3. Team returns basically same group we had this year (5th worst team in league)
4. We lose Grant in free agency
5. Team decides to rebuild

any combination of these 5 things could lead to Dame deciding it’s time. Yes I know he’s said he’s not leaving but everyone has their breaking point. Not trying to stir drama just a realist, sad to think this is even a possibility.

I take Dame at his word that he wants to stay but I have said before this summer is going to be stressful IF the Draft and offseason does not go well for the blazers. I am not worried Dame will pull a 180 and ask for a trade between now and early July BUT I am worried around late July / early August IF things do not go well in the offseason. This is the most likely time this would all go down unless the team tells him they are going to rebuild then all bets are off but as long as the team talks like they are going to continue to try for a ring chances are things will be fine barring a total offseason disaster so I expect one more year from Dame.

I don't think Dame will do anything until July free agency is finished. If the Blazers get Wemba or a rookie Dame is real high on it might be enough for him to stay. If Grant leaves Dame might want out regardless. Maybe Dame is in regardless, but I feel like if he knows it's another lottery year he might want to move on.

Does seem like there is a real chance we've seen the last of Dame as a Blazer. The team doesn't have a feasible way to contend soon, and seems much more likely we fall short in free agency as has nearly always been the case for 20 years.

Wouldn't be shocked if Dame stays or they trade him. However I would be surprised if we hear any discussions or rumors on it. I think it stays confidential untill it actually is finalized.

So OTHER than last year, he never missed more than 10% of the games when he was younger? I don't understand how that adds up to "always". haha

If you didn't see him getting injured this year, then you weren't paying attention. And you probably thought this team was going to be good. And that Cronin was going to build a good roster.
