I certainly am not skeptical of any claim you might make, you always stick to the facts and avoid hyperbole - but exactly how is that possible? I'd like to know the programs and the payout amounts, and the family size that creates a $1M overall income from public assistance. I look forward to the data.

Well, the air is thinner in beautiful central Oregon, so maybe thats where he pulled that figure out of.

Here in Beautiful Central Oregon there is a very public wage war going on throughout the fast food spots, with them all advertising multiple positions on their reader boards. Wendy's is the lowest at $10.50, Mac's is $11.00 and BK is $11.25. Wendy's actually had to shut down the dining inside for a couple weeks due to lack of help. Dairy Queen seems to be the best employer as they have not joined in the fray, apparently retaining their employees.

I drive up and down 97 quite regularly and am surprised you didn't mention Taco Bell.

It just depends on where you live right? Shit we'd be balling out of control if I lived in Hermiston but scrapping by in LA most likely.

So you're scraping by most of the year.

Pisses me off that my sons upcoming college financial aid basically punishes us for working hard and earning a good living. He'd get more free help if my wife and I chose to be lazy and have shitty jobs or not work at all and get government assistance.

We are in a different situation. My wife works and her checks as little as she thinks they are is at least consistent income we can count on year round.
I on the other hand, ,my work is VERY seasonal. I'm slammed from October they May 1st.......then barely work the rest of the time. So it has taken us years to find a balancing budget. How to stay "above water" in late summer early fall. Portland and our neighborhood is expensive as shit, and we know if we moved out to the burbs, we would be doing much better, but its a sacrifice we have been willing to make to be where we want to be.

You know, sometimes people just make less money than others and it's not a result of being lazy, or having a shitty job or whatever else you said. #mindblown

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider the "burbs"?

Is that out of the Portland area, or do you just consider anything outside of Northeast Portland the "burbs"?

I figured you live in East LA.

I appreciate who you are HCP. I enjoy reading your posts.

Growing up I thought it was anything east of 82nd and south of Laurelhurst park! HA! During this home remodeling we've been doing, I actually looked at houses for sale in diffent areas, just to see what we could get if we sold our house as is.....shit........ found beautiful brand new houses in Troutdale, The 'Couv and Tigard and other places like this that would be great to live in.

I get it, but why on earth does anyone have to appreciate it?
You said I was the laughing stock of this forum last night. I never asked why you said this. I usually see that term used in a negative light. Were you?

If everyone joking about sleeping with your wife and making you mow their lawn doesn't make you the 'laughing stock', then okay. I didn't necessarily mean it as a negative. I even admitted that you do bring positive things to the boards.
It's comedy.

EDIT: I've known him a long time and he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

I don't doubt it. However:

He's shown none to many people around here, in my opinion.

HCP takes a lot of shit, being the end of countless lawn mower jokes and HCP wife jokes. He takes it in stride and dishes it out some, too.

I personally stopped with the HCP wife jokes because I once googled "Mrs. HCP" and the number of results and how rude it all looked wasn't cool.

I think I just miss Doug, and that's why I keep bringing this all up.

Funny how the Mrs. Jokes started. It was all because of THIS pic I posted years ago......from that point on it just took over like wildfire.

Probably.....I DID hook up with Mrs. Beer a couple times is college is why!

He said the same thing about Mrs. HCP when you're on the road.

At least that's my first memory of the jokes...

Ha!
You know, it's true!
When my daughter graduated from High school, I took a year off work and we all went sailing for the year. Down to Mexico, over to Hawaii and back. It knocked my income way down for two years, but in the end it was not too much of a loss. She got all kinds of help with school cost when we got back, where my son got nothing two years later. And I avoided hitting the 65% brackets or more two years running.
While you won't pay that kind a tax anymore, help with school costs is even a bigger deal.

It is quite possible to receive over $1,000,000 income value per year solely from public assistance. More if you're not a Caucasian male and even more if you are not a US citizen.

We talking gross, net, after-tax, pre-tax, earned vs trust-fund, under the table, over the table, foreign donations to the MARIS61 FOUNDATION...? :dunno:

This is the dumbest shit I've ever heard.
