You have to feel worse for another center who became the No. 1 overall draft pick because he had the potential to dominate games with a combination of size, agility and skill. Portland's Greg Oden last month endured microfracture surgery on his left knee, wiping out another season before he played a single game.

By season's end, Oden's career will consist of 82 games over four full seasons.

“I feel especially bad for Oden,” Ginobili said. “That's even tougher. He's never even had a good season, in three or four years of playing time.”

The Spurs, who went into Saturday's game against the Grizzlies with the same starting lineup they've had all season, understand the good fortune they have had during the Tim Duncan era. Their big man has suited up for 1,002 of the 1,059 regular season games (94.6 percent) the Spurs have played since he first donned a silver and black uniform.

“Nobody's won a lot of games or championships with unhealthy players,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “It's part of the deal. If they're not healthy, you're not going to win.”
