Free Agent Portland Mayor Chooses Oakland Officer as Next Police Chief

I truly don't give a fuck what any of you think about this. Any of you. You only start having these questions when somebody black gets hired. We don't have these questions when a white male gets hired. I don't need to be tagged in this to get the black person's perspective. I don't care. I'm happy that she's a black woman. Black women from Oakland don't take no shit.
When a white guy gets hired us white guys wonder who he was buddies with. If you think I think they always pick the best person you're nuts.

No fucking way.

As I said, I think she's probably awesome. Without knowing anything about her or the other candidates I have no reason to say one deserves it over another.

Goes back to the whole hiring of Becky Hammon. People were up in arms because they didn't think men could be lead by a woman.

Yeah, in my opinion, there's an unspoken belief among many that women simply can't be qualified for jobs traditionally held by men--that if they're chosen for the job, it must be a "diversity hire."

He only got the job because of his name. He only is rich because of his father. I voted for him over a woman who was going to get the job because of her sex and who she was married to.

Neither of them were the best of the best. See what I did there?

You're part of the problem.

Bullshit.. When Marshman was hired no one in here said anything. Was there even a thread about it? Riiiggght crickets....

But now that a black woman is hired you make your idiotic comment.

Did you make a comment about Marshman's buddies?

That's what I thought...

I'd go a step further.

There's an unspoken belief among many that people of color and women aren't qualified for jobs traditionally held by white men. That if they're chosen for the job it's a diversity hire.

In which I respond to people who think that way by laughing in their face.
Sorry if your safe-space was intruded upon by this new hire. But grow the fuck up.

Never heard of him before, did anyone link a story about him? Who's making idiotic comments? Why would I link a story about him? Don't read Portland news, don't live there.

You do, where was your outrage?

You deny that the comments in the story make it seem like her skin and gender were a factor?

Dumbest post ever.

I'll try to write one sentence at a time so you can follow.

1. I think she's probably a badass.
2. I only replied because someone claimed an accusation was baseless in reference to her skin and gender.
3. Nobody thinks she can't do the job because of some "unspoken belief about women"

You're part of the problem.
You're a much bigger part. If every question gets answered with your feelings taken into account.

The movie Hidden Figures was great because it was about math. She was right, she was better than the men at math. She wins.

That's what is great about my job for example, if you can fix the cars right they don't care if you're 80 or a woman or deaf.

You guys should all work for Google, a safe space for all of you against evil cis white racist males.

I don't know why I added racist, I'm sure you all add that word in your heads.

You're not allowed to call a post dumb, when you've made a thread about how fat people should be shamed.

If you don't think it's a thing for you. Then cool.
But there are people who posted in this thread, and the Becky Hammon thread who clearly believe one thing. Women shouldn't have positions of leadership.
If you don't believe me I'm sure a bump of that thread could be made to happen.

Clearly though I struck a nerve.

I don't care that she's a woman or black.

I'm a little perplexed on why they need to hire people from outside of Portland though. It seems to me that policing a city is as much about understanding the culture of the city as it is about police training and experience.

Was there no one on the Portland Police Force that was adequately qualified?

Maybe she has a different perspective that will help our cause? Frankly, I have never really cared who they hire. A cop is a cop is a cop. They're not black. They're not white. They're blue, and they care more about the thin blue line than they do about the people they're supposed to be protecting.

I'm just sick of people shitting their pants over anybody getting hired with great qualifications.

Obviously she is more than qualified.

If someone is qualified there should be no bitching about ethnicity, gender etc.

Really the only thing i dislike about the hiring is it's another californian moving here.

Portland should be a cakewalk compared to Oakland.

I hope she does an awesome job. They can start by actually giving a shit about the deep eastside.

Only to Drumpf voter minds. Besides, why do you care? You're the one bringing it up. You seem kinda upset about it.

For the record:

I'm GLAD they didn't hire another white man.

#yesisaidit.

I kinda wish they'd post the interviews of key public positions like police chief, or school superintendent. I'm curious what questions they ask them and what the chosen candidates answered to those questions.

I support this selection if only for the reason that an Outlaw now runs the police department.

Other than that - she seems well qualified - hopefully she is a great hire.

Sigh.

This is why these conversations are never productive.

I'm not saying you aren't wrong in retaliating against some of the comments in this thread.

The world is just fucked right now.

Fuck this bullshit. None of these folk said SHIT when any of the white guys were hired.

BLACK don't CRACK

Stupid. She was hired just because she's a black woman. Nice PC move Mayor.

Guess what, having black police chiefs, black city councils, black officers, a black president and a black head of DOJ STILL didn't quell baseless accusations of "systemic racism".

But it sure seems like she wouldn't have got the job if she wasn't a black woman.

I'm just guessing about her other than I read an old story where someone said she was honest about OPD problems.

Old white guys suck too. The Police Chief Charlie Beck of LA fucking blows. Called it at the time, he just seems like a shithead.

I agree with dviss on this. Given great qualifications, I'm glad to see a woman of color be given a leadership role. Not because I hate white men, but because minorities and women need to be getting more opportunities like this when they have the qualifications for it.

Its more a function of Oakland being an out of control crime ridden shit hole that can't contain their own riots than her being black.

Nah, it's because she's extremely qualified. Oakland is also a pretty typical blue collar city--some extremely crime-ridden parts, some nice parts. Property values have been rising with gentrification, though, to the point that it's now only a bit cheaper to live there than in San Francisco's metro area.

Honestly, I have never followed the hiring/firing of our police chief. I didn't notice when Moose was the chief during the Katz era either. They seem to come and go without much fanfare. Each Mayor wants to install their own Chief. It seems like kind of a weak position. The Mayor has a lot of power over the police.

Well, it's a bit like being Secretary of State or Attorney General or something. Each President installs their own--the position carries a lot of power and influence, but it's ultimately subject to the general direction/vision of the executive (mayor in this case, President in my examples).
