Free Agent Portland Mayor Chooses Oakland Officer as Next Police Chief

I agree with dviss on this. Given great qualifications, I'm glad to see a woman of color be given a leadership role. Not because I hate white men, but because minorities and women need to be getting more opportunities like this when they have the qualifications for it.

But if I say something like this, I hate white people....

This is an interesting story.
When the search for Chief began, the salary range cited is $143,312 to $205,379 a year. The out going chief made $173,000 according to another article.

Then another article says, the lady from Oakland will be paid $210,000 a year. Damn! A pretty good boost from the $129,000 she made in Oakland.

Portland has well over 1000 police officers. Can it be true that none are qualified to serve as Chief at the starting salary level for Chief?

This new lady is coming in from the outside, promoted from Lieutenant in Oakland to Chief in Portland at just over salary range for the Job!

Wow! What a find! She must be better than Batman.

Wonder why the NYPD doesn't take this route, hire a superstar? They alway promote from within. You guys in Portland must be just blessed to have such clairvoyant and righteous leadership.

Probably parsing words here, but there is a minor difference between "I'm glad to see a woman of color be given a leadership role" or "minorities and women need to be getting more opportunities like this" and "I'm glad they didn't hire another white man."

It's of course good to be supportive of members of a historically-marginalized group; it's generally considered less so to be in opposition to members of a historically privileged group specifically because of that status.

Personally, I'm just glad they hired someone qualified, and will assume that they hired the best candidate, and hope she does an exemplary job.

Well, it's a bit like being Secretary of State or Attorney General or something. Each President installs their own--the position carries a lot of power and influence, but it's ultimately subject to the general direction/vision of the executive (mayor in this case, President in my examples).

She needs to recuse herself from the investigation into meetings with the Warriors.

 not sure why you are including me. I have repeatedly said i felt she was more than qualified for the job and don't know what the fuss is about.

I was responding to your quote not including you. :)

*Edited above*

If i felt someone wasn't qualified i would say so. I don't feel like Kate Brown is qualified. I don't think marshman was doing a great job so i'm happy for the change.

Many people feel trump is doing an awful job, he is a white man.

Who cares? I literally do not care she is a woman or black. Her qualifications were top notch. It's commendable how much she has accomplished at her age. A role model to all.

Just the back and forth complaining about her being black and comments about hating white people are not productive from either side.

Can't we all just get along?

We could if people weren't making those comments I quoted.

I hired a black lady as a development manager once. Didn't have to bring her in from the outside though, she was already in the organization.

Is this going to be like that Vice Principals show on HBO where a black lady comes in and takes the principal job the two VPs wanted, and probably does a better job than they would have, only with cops?

Man, I'm too busy working on an old ass Mini Cooper to go see all the quotes I got. I'll have to check back later. I'm sure it is all good.

Nope. That's not human nature. We argue. We fight. We have different opinions. We kill each other.

Sadly, I don't see that changing anytime soon.... although I don't really want to see us stop disagreeing. I think disagreement is important. If everyone agreed with each other all the time, this would be a boring place.

I don't disagree with you.

I like having arguments.

But when people start arguing with people about stuff they can't change, like the color of one's skin, it really grinds my gears. Who the fuck cares if the most qualified person was a woman, black, muslim, asian, christian, white, latino. If they do a good job, then awesome. It's better for all of us.

I just hate how anything and everything today turns into a white vs POC, republicans vs. Democrats type argument.

This shit is everywhere you turn now and it gets really old, why can't we just go back to all being American and on the same side?

It's definitely not constructive when nobody is willing to budge.

With that said, would it really be so implausible, or even just downright savvy, on the part of the mayor to hire a black person? Or even more so, a black woman?

This city doesn't have a great reputation on policing the black community. We have seen countless protests over the past year about police violence against black people. If I'm the mayor and I'm wanting to improve relations between my police force and the black community, I'm going to hire a black chief. Seems pretty straight forward, and I don't see anything wrong with it.

Notionally, I completely agree with you. However, I think Muhammad Ali had a great response to why he refused to fight for America (with heavy implications, in the question, about why he didn't feel patriotism and a desire to pull together with him fellow Americans in a time of war): "I don't have anything against the Viet Cong--no Viet Cong ever called me a nigger."

In a similar vein, it's hard for everyone to feel on the same side, when various groups feel like they're marginalized or discriminated against. The reality is, our country was never created as a "single side" and that has filtered down through the generations. Even aside from the white/black issue, for as much as we've prided ourselves on being a melting pot, there's been (right from the start) a lot of oil and water factions that simply never mixed well.

Mr. Ali was very misinformed then. I get his sentimate. But i have a vietnamese stepmom who lived in Vietnam during the war.

Based on the stories she has told me, the vietnamese hated black people back then. She still has a lot of scaredness and dislike for black people today.

For the record she dislikes most white people too. She thinks all whites want to get her in trouble.

You're misunderstanding what he was saying, IMO. Ali wasn't saying that Vietnamese aren't racist--humans are racist, regardless of nationality. His point was, as I read it, the problems he encountered were created by Americans, not Vietnamese. So why would he take up arms for America to kill Vietnamese?

I truly don't give a fuck what any of you think about this. Any of you. You only start having these questions when somebody black gets hired. We don't have these questions when a white male gets hired. I don't need to be tagged in this to get the black person's perspective. I don't care. I'm happy that she's a black woman. Black women from Oakland don't take no shit.
black women from Oakland don't take no shit...lol. Okay? I see this as a PC move. The mayor is white as fuck but also a little pussy. It's fucking Portland, one of the most PC progressive cities in the country. Come on

Only to Drumpf voter minds. Besides, why do you care? You're the one bringing it up. You seem kinda upset about it.

For the record:

I'm GLAD they didn't hire another white man.

#yesisaidit.
That white man gon get ya. The devil himself.

the shit you are taught. Great job Portland!!!

And you know what black people teach their children? How? You don't realize how stupid that sounds...

I am just saying man nobody said she isn't qualified but if you don't think this is a typical Portland PC ultra left diversity bullshit move then you lost it

The fact that you don't think that's saying she's unqualified says a lot about you.
