Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has asked the federal government to revoke a permit for what he described as an alt-right demonstration planned Sunday at Terry Schrunk Plaza across from City Hall.

Wheeler also said the city will not issue permits for such events, and appealed to the organizers to cancel them. He asked the federal government not to issue a permit for a second event, an anti-Muslim march planned for June 10th.

"Our city is in mourning, our community's anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation," Wheeler wrote on Facebook, referring to the stabbing attack on a MAX train Friday that left two men dead and a third wounded. "I urge them to ask their supporters to stay away from Portland."

Police have said the suspect in the stabbings was yelling slurs at two teenage girls on the train, one of whom was wearing a hijab, when the other men intervened to try to talk him down.

The purpose of the June 4th free speech rally in downtown Portland is to "bring back strength and courage to those who believe in freedom," according to the organizer's Facebook page. Vancouver-based Patriot Prayer has held other "free speech rallies," including one in Montavilla last month where the suspect in the Friday MAX train killings – Jeremy Joseph Christian – attended and reportedly yelled racial epithets and "Die Muslims!"

Not much of a leader. This just sounds like a partisan pot tender.
"Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has asked the federal government to revoke a permit for what he described as an alt-right demonstration"

This new habit of the left, of labeling those who disagree as hateful/racist or whatever, and using that as grounds to shut them down is something that has really turned me off to the left.

Unless there is more to it, like revoking all permits due to threat of increased violence, I agree that this goes against free speech and what in the end will defeat these assholes. If they follow the prescribed protocol to get a permit, their views shouldn't matter. Trust in the populous to pay them no-nevermind or run an anti-rally of their own. Let the alt-right-haters yell louder to drown them out, don't let government ever be the ones to shut peoples voices off.

I'm against the banning of this gathering...

but this event has been timed to coincide with the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade. That is going to leave police resources very stretched during their biggest event of the year. Between 300,000 to 500,000 people a year attend this parade and it is a very real potential terrorist target.

It would be best for everyone if the June 10th rally was moved to a different day.

So labeling it alt-right isn't smart, just asking for the permit to be delayed until police resources are freed up would have been sufficient,

This strikes me as one of those political moves where he knows he can't revoke the permit, and the protest will happen anyway, but he gets credit with all the liberals in this city for trying.

I think the thing that drives me crazy about a lot of liberals is the extreme hypocrisy.

I was reading yesterday about how a friend of the stabber tried to come to the court room to support him. The guy said that Christian had changed a lot but he wanted to let him know that he's still his friend. That guy was basically chased off by all the people who are furious over the stabbings. They called him a Nazi and a racist. What happened to "love over hate?" I don't understand how these people can't see the irony in their behavior. They laud the three men who stood up to the stabber because he was accosting a girl for being Muslim, and yet here are a bunch of people chasing off a man who just wanted to be there for his friend. Whether you agree with him or not, that's just extremely hypocritical.

They started to yell "Boo!" and "Get out!" That prompted the man to speed walk away, then stop to tie his shoelaces for a few minutes on a nearby bench as the group surrounded him.
Deputies had to separate the crowd from the man.

Some shouted: "Nazi" and "Facist Neo-Nazi" and pointed to the man's red shoelaces on his black boots as a symbol of what they said indicates support for white supremacy.

As nearby media cameras focused on the man, one supporter yelled: "Show the world what a hater looks like!"

The man said that wasn't true. A short while later, he said: "I'm not going to get into a debate with people. I know I'm a good person."

He was led down the stairs and outside the Justice Center by a deputy as people yelled from the top of the stairs that he should get out of Portland. Three people followed him to his bike, chained across the street.

He told a reporter with The Oregonian/OregonLive that he went to court to support Christian, a longtime friend.

I read about this yesterday on Yahoo. He's just another piece of shit mayor in a LOOOONG line of shitty Portland mayors. I'm beginning to actually think that Liberals are going to be their own downfall, especially if they keep electing morons like this clown shoe.

I saw the video of him being run off and it did not sit well with me. I kind of feel like a little common sense needs to be applied to all of this. Emotion is very raw. Violence is likely imminent. From that perspective, I agree that postponing the rally is a good idea. I also think Christian's friend likely knew exactly what he was doing and was trying to incite a reaction. He should have stayed away. That day.

I totally understand that people are upset. I understand that there is a lot of raw emotion and anger. It's just sad that you can go look at the memorial at the MAX station and there's all these messages of love, acceptance, and tolerance..... and not more than a few days later there's people from the other side who are chasing down and accosting someone they don't agree with. It's hypocritical. It's the same kind of shit that drove me away from Christianity. If you're going to say that you are about love and acceptance, then you should ALWAYS be about love and acceptance. Not just when it's people that you agree with.

Where were the people standing up for that guy's rights? Where were the people doing the right thing for him? We have seen this same hypocrisy for months now. People marching against Trump, carrying signs that say things like "Love Trumps Hate" and yet they quickly turn into an angry and aggressive mob if they see someone that disagrees with them. It's shameful.

There's a reason why people came up with the term "Regressive Left".

So people should tolerate intolerance?

Either he knew what he was doing, or the story as reported is incomplete, or he's a moron. Maybe all three.

He's a free man in a free country, violating no laws and going about his life.

Who are you to say he should have "stayed away"?

I agree with you that violence is likely imminent, since the same 2 dozen paid antifa clowns have been allowed to openly attack people and property over and over and over since the election. Several attack victims were completely within their rights to have killed their attackers in self-defense, but were either unarmed or showed remarkable restraint. Since neither Wheeler or Brown will enforce the laws and arrest and prosecute these criminals and the man who pays them, sooner or later one of their victims will be forced to use lethal force. I fully expected it to happen months ago.

You're the hero we need!

I stopped reading at the bolded part. This whole pay to protest narrative is some of the most psycho shit I've ever heard. Everything else you say I can't take seriously.

I moved AWAY FROM PDX largely to avoid criminals, not engage in combat with them.

There are no antifa "terrorists" here in Beautiful Central Oregon. Maybe it's the dry climate?

Very understandable.

It's the lack of falafel shops.

Anytime somebody starts saying bigotry in their statements as wheeler did is a warning sign. If it was a different kind of protest against trump or whatever he would allow it, but since it's some trump supporters it shouldn't be illegal. If anything watch for antifa to try and create the violence, a fucking trump protest in Portland is nothing but I have watched these other protests over the last year and it involved antifa fucking the city up while police were super late on arrival. I can't stand progressives. Freedom of speech isn't allowed to them. They talk about open dialogue but can't and won't speak to somebody with a different opinion. Berkeley already succeeded in ending free speech while screaming fascists to people like milo and Ann coulter. Meanwhile what they are doing is fascists because these idiots with the masks dont even know what it truly means. Society is getting out of control with the progressive movement and unfortunately it's the wrong path and can lead to a very dangerous time if people keep up with it

I'm just getting tired of the double standard and hypocrisy.

There's a rocket leaving for Mars soon, I think that's probably your only option to get away from it.
