Exclusive Portland: Still Not a Destination

All we need to do is import thousands of young black people to Portland, and the culture necessary to make NBA players happy will follow.

Here's a picture of the guy that turned us down, in case you were confused:

I really hate to say it, but if I was Paul Allen and really wanted a winning Blazer team, I might really consider moving them to Seattle. I hate Seattle, but it doesn't have the same issues Portland does with reputation.

I hope he doesn't, but I would understand if he did.
They lost an NBA franchise to Oklahoma....we've never done that

That's scary considering he turned down $16m/per last summer!

Im guessing we're going to overpay to keep him.

I can live with an overpay of Turner but an overpay of Leonard is just too much. Turner can improve on his three point percentage and maybe start Meyers doesant have a stich of natural instinct in his body. Let's take a flyer on somebody cheap and weight till next year.

No matter how rich our owner is, and how nice our facilities are, most players apparently just don't want to be here. So we'll have nice teams, and a promising young player every once in awhile, but we'll never attract the kind of big name free agent that gets you a title.

I can't believe that after 46 years in the NBA, Portland is still considered a backwater hick town by most NBA players. No matter how rich our owner is, and how nice our facilities are, most players just don't want to be here. Which means that our odds of ever winning a championship again are very, very slim.

Draft lottery! I think we should tank it this year honestly. All this is pointless

Personally, I'd rather see battle scarred, playoff exits where our young team gains valuable experience, while I get to watch, hope and dream of some miracle ending such as being down 0-2 to the Clippers only to win 4 in a row. That's just me though.

Amen.
Tunchi kind of reminds me of younger brother in law that doesn't understand hard work and climbing to the top. Just wants to sit on the couch and do nothing until some company tosses a 6 figure salary at his feet.
Sorry. Work hard, earn your keep and sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. But you will always stay in shape and pay your bills, unlike becoming potentially homeless with nothing to show for your life but sitting around waiting for the slim chance to strike it rich.
Sorry. I'm more prideful than that and would much rather work hard and earn my keep, than lay down and have it handed to me.

I'm going to call Bologna to this not being a destination. Granted, this is not South Beach, LA, or anything hip if you will. But if you look at it closely, what has teams like the Lakers and Clippers have done the last few years in FA? What has the Heat done other than keep their own FA's? They are not places that are cleaning up the free agent market.

I don't think Destination is the right term for it. I think it's competence and execution. If you have someone competent enough to do the job. Even Portland can bring in marquee players. Trader Bob was the last person in that position that had the complete competence to do what was needed to build a winner. We haven't had that since him. He was a lot of things but he could do everything the job description requested of him. Include recruit free agents come play here.

I just think it's a lil less about destination and more about execution. And Neil, like I said there are some positives there. But he has wasted a lot of opportunities from a player personal stamdpoint. You bring the right guy in here and I don't mean Bob but the right guy. He can get it done.

I'd like to think your are right. Perhaps it is just having the right GM with the needed backing.

It's been done.

Despite the influx of people the last few years, Portland remains TV ratings death. It's still one of the smallest markets and no one but those from the NW care 1 iota about the Blazers. Coming off a finals matchup that featured a rematch clash of the league's 2 biggest marketing stars, I still believe the league tilts the calls in favor of the guys who move the most product.

Players, especially established difference makers, want to compete for titles. They recognize whats what with the league and act accordingly in Free Agency. Maybe Durant resigns with OKC for a 1 year deal, but if I know my NBA he'll be headed to a big market for a chance to win soon. Sucks

You know what. I am tired of people putting this on our city. The fault lies with Olshey. The Blazers had a great turn around after Aldridge left. We had a winning season, went to the second round. The Blazers hired the best of broadcasters, are in the process of signing a hell of a TV deal that will enlargen the market....the Blazers are awesome...Portland is awesome...Neil failed to sale it

They don't even visit our city to see our nice facilities. Everyone is gone in the first 72 hours. It's a fucking buyers market.

Who knows what the reason is but it certainly seems to exist and existed long before Neil got here.

I think Portland's best bet is to aim for quality depth. We're not going to land those stars unless we draft them (or trade for them before they develop).

And then once we develop them, they leave

I have to be honest. I am stunned by how many NBA free agents are rejecting Portland. I mean, I know we're not a glamorous destination, but neither is Memphis or Salt Lake City or Dallas, and they all made significant editions. What the hell is going on, Olshey?? This is downright embarrassing. You would think Portland doesn't even exist.

Portland has not had many years with cap space, and there's a lot of competition for free agents, but what is our record in competing for guys? The only battle I can remember winning when multiple teams were going after someone is Jamal Crawford. Of course, we don't know the story behind every signing, but that's the only clear cut case I can think of, maybe you can think of others.

But what really makes you think, is when we get spurned in favor of places like Toronto (Turkoglu), Charlotte (Hawes, a guy born in the northwest), Memphis (Parsons). It's like WTF.

Parsons:

Text message from Chandler Parsons on why he chose the Grizzlies: "I really believed in Coach Fiz. Nobody in the league has coached better wings than him. I trust [assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff] with my life. They have nobody like me, and their veteran, experienced players are a perfect fit with me. "Toughest decision of my life though. Portland is incredible."
