I guess GQ is not quite right, but DQ might have been confusing

speaking of the threats to "de-fund" the police, those threats may already be having an impact where they are directed:

"The Minneapolis Police Department will withdraw from police union contract negotiations, Chief Medaria Arradondo said Wednesday in announcing the first steps in what he said would be transformational reforms to the agency in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
Arradondo said thorough review of the contract is planned. He said the contract needs to be restructured to provide more transparency and flexibility for true reform. The review would look at matters such as critical incident protocols, use of force, and disciplinary protocols including grievances and arbitration.

He said it’s debilitating for a chief when there are grounds to terminate an officer and a third-party mechanism works to keep that person on the street.

“This work must be transformational, but I must do it right,” Arradondo said of reforms

"Arradondo sidestepped a question about whether he thought union head Bob Kroll, often seen as an obstacle to reform, should step down"

Kroll is extremely confrontational, obstinate, antagonistic, and a big believer in military police tactics and "active killer" training for police (includes the tactic used on George Floyd). He is one of the police union leaders that needs to be moved aside in order for true reforms to happen. And he represents the kind of obstacle that may only be overcome by the threat of de-funding.

Another guaranteed loser continues an endless succession of guaranteed losers picked by proven losers.

DRAIN THE FUCKING SWAMP ALREADY.

people always talk about draining the swamp....but what do you drain it into?

"Defund" is being used accurately. The movement is about reducing the budgets of police forces. Now, you could say that there's more to it that's being lost in the word "defund," which is true, but "Start a review and overhaul of how we address public safety and reduce both the scope of police work and the number of police while we put more money into revitalizing neglected communities, more social workers who know how to connect with people and other measures that might better reduce crime rates" doesn't fit on a sign, nor is it an efficient rallying cry. It's better as the preamble for a website or policy paper. No single word is going to describe everything going on in a complicated issue, but "defund" isn't being used incorrectly.

Anyone who actually cares to consider the issue in a good faith way will look into why and how people want to defund the police. Anyone who doesn't want to consider it in a good faith way will just keep saying "Sure, get rid of all the police and watch crime rates skyrocket."

LOL what a crock of shit! All I see is generalized statements, nothing specific.

Did you ever read about Camden, NJ?

I think you're referring to a town where they reduced the financing of the police and focused it on other areas and the crime rate went down. I think I read about it at some time or another.

That's not exactly right but I think it's as close as we're going to get you.

Damn, I called that one!

Go read about Camden, NJ. They defunded their police department years ago and then expanded the county sheriff's office. There has been some good and bad and I'm not providing links because it's something that you should look for in your favorite news sources. Google it, read about it.

Now that you read an opinion from a source you like you should look into it a little more for a more complete picture.

I wasn't setting policy, I was explaining how defunding police is neither about not having police nor about investing less into public safety.

I expect your complete powerpoint presentation to be posted in this forum by morning.

because getting into ridiculous semantic arguments is easier than debating the issue
Semantics matter. The problem with the English language, and probably with any language, is the nuances of meanings that often need clarification. I've seen huge arguments on multi Billion dollar projects because representatives of two major functionals misunderstood something. These were very high level meetings I was in and very important people representing Boeing Aerospace, Boeing Electronics, Boeing Computing and so on would get into fist shaking arguments over simple misunderstandings. Now, add to that the fact that forums such as this are even less clear that spoken language and you've got yourself a myriad of pitfalls.
I've always been of the sort that says you can never make something too clear. However, in this case I thought it was being carried a bit too far although I don't fault the attempt.
Your insight into this does have it's merit, so thanks for that.
