Looking at Whitmore, one of the things that stands out to me is how powerful he can be getting by defensive players without throwing his elbows out.
It seems more and more in the NBA that players are getting offensive fouls for elbow motions that are part of a natural shooting motion, when defensive players crowd the driver/shooter. Whitmore doesn’t need to throw his elbows out because of his size and strength, at least against players around his size.

See at the 2:10 mark where Cam drives from the 3-point line, goes up and dislodges the defender draped over him with his body first, gets the bucket and is fouled.
At 2:40 on a fast break, Whitmore dribbles through the contact of a defender (which should have been a foul, the dude is leaning into him to no avail) and even though the defender is attached to him is able to lay in the ball without throwing out his arms.

Defender actually leaning into Whitmore to try to stop him from scoring, to no avail.
Whitmore keeps his right arm straight ahead while the defender pushes his face into it, then powers through and scores.
Definitely a foul on #1 and #15 could have been called for putting his hand in the cookie jar even if there was no contact.

Maybe, or maybe not. Oden was the consensus #1 pick but we still hear some stories and some fans say how the Blazers made a mistake and should've drafted Durant.

Although now that Durant has bailed on 3 teams including where he won titles it seems that talk has lessened.

I’m not hearing anyone talk about drafting Scoot over Wemby. I hear more talk about Miller over Scoot.

There was a decent amount of talk of people wanting Durant over Oden.

I kinda understand what you're thinking from afar.

Not sure how we would match salary to get Gobert without giving Minnesota way too much talent.

I recall a poll the said 29 out of the 30 GMs said they would've picked. I believe the one who wouldn't have was the Magic and that is because they had a 21 year old all-star, Dwight Howard.

Had Oden been some dominate HOF center and Durant turned into Jonathan Bender, I'm fairly confident the 2023 narrative would have been "Oden was the clear #1 pick."
 
I would think offering our first pick this year less #1, with Simons & Nurk and some could, bring a star player of need.

They are both kind of awkward also. And Gobert so weak that he can't finish a dunk when there is contact. And KAT generally avoids contact.

While I'm not sure he's the best player projected 2-8, he's probably the best to fill immediate needs on this roster. I'm definitely intrigued... hope he measures at the combine

I don't disagree that Jody would probably pay the money, but you have to match salaries to make the trade work. That will be very difficult to do without giving up better players, on better contracts, to get Gobert, who is a worse player, on a worse contract. Dame doesn't want to give up better players to get a worse one; or at least he hasn't indicated that is his desire.

We need to have the Olshey salaries (Turner, Crabbe, Festus, etc) on the books to trade for someone like Gobert.

My bad.... Yes, given how many fans are in the world, there will also be some that want to go against the grain. I'm confident you'll be able to find fans who want Scoot over Wemby when it gets closer to draft day as well.

I mean, I really don’t think it’s comparable.

What Scoot did in the G league is not even comparable to what Durant did at Texas.

Durant averaged a double double with nearly 30 points and was a defensive force. He was shooting 50/40/not sure on his FT%. Once again, not even comparable to Scoot.

There was a legitimate case for Durant over Oden with those numbers. There really isn’t a case for Scoot over Wemby.

As I said before, there is more talk about Miller or Scoot.
 
Long story short: Anyone who says Scoot over Wemby is doing it solely to go against the grain.

Durant over Oden was legitimate based on the numbers. Oden was only superior in blocked shots (not even rebounding).

Agreed there is no value in comparing college numbers and G-League numbers. Two totally different animals; and frankly, two different eras.

The similarity between the two situation is that there is/was a clear #1 among league executivies in the 2007 and 2023 drafts. Fans will always cover all scenariors.

Correct. But Portland would be giving up the best player with the best contract, and picks, and a center, for the worst contract.

If anything, Minnesota should be giving Portland multiple firsts in this scenario. From a talent, the trade makes Portland worse, and they are worse off contract wise. I don't think Dame wants that.

Shooting 50%/40% translates pretty well. Rarely does a guy shooting 27% then start shooting 40% from 3.

Conversely, rarely does a guy shooting 40% start shooting sub 30%.

But yes, there is a clear favorite among executives.

That’s not what I responded to, though.

I can find plenty of news articles that say Oden v. Durant…

I doubt you’ll find one that says “Wemby or Scoot? The debate rages on!”
