For a second I thought you were talking about Powell and thought "holy Cow! This guy's played like Dame this month!"
Then I thought, haha, it's Dame.
Then I thought--wait, those aren't Dame's exact numbers...and all those losses...he HAS played like Dame this month.

I think he's a viable replacement if you can get something good in return for CJ.

I'm extremely curious as to what CJ's value is around the league.
I remember one article from last year that said "CJ for Aaron Gordon...who says no?" and laughing...wasn't even Fansided or BR or something...

Edit: Found it. The Ringer.

He said for years and years that Mark Few was going to jump ship for the Ducks. I emailed him a couple times saying it just won’t happen. He finally stopped writing about it after a decade.

He’s a douchebag
Could he jump ship for the Blazers?!?!

We need a wing or a power forward. I'm not sure who... I have no idea who's going to be disgruntled or available, but I'd like to get someone close to CJ's value at one of the forward spots.

From what has been on some "insider" podcasts and the like, TOR knew (much like we did) that Powell was headed for a big raise. He was going to be UFA, though, with his player opt-out. At least with Trent, they have his Bird Rights and can match.

From what I've also heard, there was no way we were paying Trent market value, so getting Powell for the next 3 months is a nominal upgrade.

The Blazers would acquire Bird rights on Powell with this trade, right? The opt-out doesn't change the fact that the Blazers can bid whatever is needed if they want to re-sign Powell. He's not restricted so it's his choice as to where he goes, but the Blazers do have the ability to make money not the issue if he chooses to leave. So, basically, this is the same kind of play that Toronto made in acquiring Kawhi, but with a lesser player. One thought that does occur to me is that if the Blazers are able to re-sign Powell, it gives them flexibility regarding trading CJ next summer. That flexibility is worth making this move, IMO.

Who thinks that Powell will walk in free agency because he get's a good payday and the Blazers cant afford him?
Hard to tell, he may like it here and its not like we couldn't give him decent contact. Can you not do a sign and trade also if he wants to move on?
I do think CJ if he recovers and finishes well could be on the market this offseason, so that too give the Blazers some options.

I think Ben Simmons is the natural answer here. CJ would solve a lot of PHI's problems, and Simmons solves a bunch of ours.
If the lineup is something like Dame/Powell/Simmons/RoCo/Nurk, you're now top-10 on D and have two defensive-minded ballhandlers in Simmons and Nurk that can get Dame the ball in space as he hits his late-prime. I'd love to see that team.

I generally agree with all of this. Yes, they got Powell's Bird Rights, so we at least have a shot at re-signing him. He'll likely take his opt-out, so they're in the same boat in terms of losing players.
I'm not confident enough in my player values to bet my life on it, but I think Trent gets paid more than Powell this year. Both get paid--don't get me wrong--but I think Trent being 5+ years younger and already showing out in his 3rd year gets someone to pay through the nose.

Wet dream. We need Philly to get swept in the first round so it becomes possible and we need CJ to ball out.

A LOT IMO will depend on how the rest of the season in Toronto goes, after a fast/hot shooting start his percentages were dropping significantly and IMO he was taking too many bad/forced shots, a weak rest of yr and his payday IMO is not so great, a strong close and yeah 15-20 mil per probably

I want to believe that removing hood gives nas more minutes, but last nights game was without both Trent and hood, and nas played his usual low minutes. Isn’t melo just going to soak up any extra hood minutes? :(
really liked the defense on Herro I saw last night from Nas, Simons was a chair compared to Nas guarding Herro

Do you know how long I have been clamoring for Simmons? He is my dream pairing with Dame.

I'm hoping Philly flames out in the playoffs and Daryl decides he needs to move Ben. CJ + Simons + picks to eternity for Simmons would be an insane coup for us for that very lineup you have posted. Powell would be a reasonable facsimile to CJ and we'd have a top level defense to go with it.

I agree. I think that Powell's price tag will be less than Trent's, which would be a better fit with the Blazers' salary situation. It may turn out that his price is still too high or that he simply would rather play somewhere else. Either way, I don't think either Hood or Trent were in the Blazers' plans for next season so it's a no cost flier on a more experienced player, IMO.

BTW, good to see you posting again.

Daryl covets 3 point shooters and he knows who has to beat. IM not sure Harris and Curry are the answers?

This is NOT a "minor" upgrade!

Partly because Ant played.

We’d be better off without Melo. His presence is stunting our young guys PT especially Nas... and Melo is overrated. Inefficient, ball hog, bad defender, bad rebounder. Every time Melo does something good on the defensive end he uses it as an excuse and goes one on two firing up a contested two pointer.

Imagine when Zach comes back.

What makes you guys think Melo won't be back next year? He's still chasing the points list and we seem to love his legacy.

Trent was not good for the Blazers this year. Bad defense and his advanced stats are brutal. He’s a -.1 in VORP this year. A complete liability. Let someone else over pay shorter Allen Crabbe, but without the defense.

I’m actually starting to not mind him much. There’s probably 3-4 games we would have lost this year if it wasn’t for him. His defense isn’t great but it’s not awful. The only time I really wish he wasn’t on the team is when his shot isn’t hitting haha. But that goes for everyone else on the team too

I think Simmons has a lot more value than CJ around the league. My guess is that if Philly put Simmons on the market, they'd get better offers.

Ironically, Simmons is probably the ideal type of player to play with CJ. CJ's issue is that he's a point guard sized player who, on top of not being good defensively, is additionally stretched having to defend wings (shooting guards, generally). But CJ can't really play point guard full time on offense. So he's a difficult fit next to an actual point guard. But a player like Simmons can play point guard on offense while allowing CJ to defend the opposing point guard since Simmons is better utilized defensively on the wing or against some power forwards.

So, CJ for Embiid? Who says no?

Just kidding. We don't need another center.

I wouldn't even do that. Knowing our luck with centers Embiid would be forced to retire a few months into his tenure with us.

I also think being in his good graces wouldn't hurt our recruiting. If Melo can reach out to some of these dudes and be like "Portland is dope." Maybe it will stick? :dunno:

Very possible. A lot of players these days grew up watching him and idolizing him. I think Portland might have added a couple ‘cool points’ having Melo on the team.

Zion was gushing about him. I think he was on the Redick podcast and they asked him about who he enjoyed playing against and he specifically mentioned Melo.

I think Terry realistically gets fired last summer if Paul was still here

Okay so now it's "I think Terry gets fired"
I can go with that. Now you are stating an opinion and I could not say you are wrong at all.
