Trade Powell to Portland!

Well this can give Olshey now reason to trade CJ in the off season because powell might be better along side Dame. But we will see how works out the rest of the season. Plus big Nurk will back tomorrow and maybe Zach might for the playoffs. Now the trade deadline is done now the players can focusing to play basketball.

I think Powell should be a starter. Yeah, he's "short"...but while wings can shoot over his head, can they shoot over his arms, when he has a 6'11'' wingspan?

PG: Lillard
SG: McCollum
SF: Powell
PF: Covington
C: Nurkic

I think that gets Portland's best five on the court, with three good defenders (granted, Nurkic's defense isn't ideal for containing pick-and-rolls) and plenty of shooting.

I expect this will be the closing lineup, except in those few games Stotts is senile and plays Melo over Nurkic.

To be honest I think

Lillard
Powell
Jones
Covington
Nurkic

May actually be better all things considered. But whatever. Will never happen.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Powell start over DJJ.

Along with Nurk returning it could give us much better defensive balance on the starting and backup units.

Nurk Kanter
RoCo Melo
Powell DJJ
CJ
Dame Simons

I think ultimately the team might be best with one of Kanter or Melo getting DNP.... Not sure how they can do that as Melo and Kanter have done whatever the team has asked.

Powell provides more offense, we need one bench scorer in Melo or Kanter but I dont think we need both.

Cautiously optimistic about the trade.

The good:
Multi-level scorer
great 3 point shooter
age fits Dame's window
high character guy
No more minutes for Rodney 5.6 PER Hood
Powell 17.65 PER, Gary 12.72, 13.77. PER is NOT the ultimate, but from a PER POV, it's a slam dunk.
Powell's defense is supposed to be pretty good. It's GOT TO BE better than Hood/Gary. Along with more NAS minutes, defense should improve.

The Bad:
undersized (though our chances improve in the 6'4" and under league :) )
Is a UFA and will be asking for $16 to $20 mil PER.
Helps the team in a place we didn't need help, which begs the question "are we going to get any help where we need help?" - e.g. defense, bigs.
Not a PG. IMHO, this will kill Ant's career (because he'll be stuck as a PG).

I'm sure others have more thoughts, but this is my immediate first take.

PERfect post!

Lillard has already started following Powell on IG

if it really meant something, he’d have done it before the deal.

like Gordon following a bunch of Celtics when it looked like he might be headed there.

Wait what happened to Little?

I would rather see a three guard lineup of Dame CJ and Powell rather then relying on Ant. Go with the SF of DJJ and Nas with Powell sliding in there on occasion too.

pretty obvious Powell is generally an upgrade over Trent

but he doesn't significantly alter Portland's trajectory. Maybe the Blazers can strike real gold in the buyout market that complements the addition of Powell

This is a total Neil move. Completely misunderstanding what's wrong with the team and flat out refusing to make the changes that need to be made.

tell us what’s wrong with the team. I saw horrible defense out of our backcourt - now improved - and we need depth and defense from a Center position. Too much hope being placed on Nurkic and I’d have hoped we could have napped McGee to help. But the buyout market may be where we get our help.

I didn't think Trent was as good as advertised on D, but is Powell better? Not according to his dire DRPM.

I
Don't know much about Powell's game. Looks to be a really strong and athletic guard the few times that I've watched him. Sorry to see Trent go. Didn't expect much when we drafted him, so it was nice to see him developed into a productive player.

With Hood gone, Nas should get more playing time so that's a positive.
look forward to watching Little’s growth these next couple of months!

I thought any Gordon trade would've required Hood + [Simons AND Nas] (Hood + Trent wouldn't have have worked under the cap), or alternatively Hood/Simons/Zach if staying under the tax really was a driver. To say nothing of picks, which we would've had to do a trade to guarantee this year's with HOU before sending any more out.

Yes, in a vacuum I think Gordon for all of our young wings may have been a decent deal and helped this year. Gordon as the 3rd or 4th best guy on a team is a good team. But if it ended up being Norman's next 3 months for Hood and Trent's (we weren't matching his RFA), then...ok, I guess?

[semi-joking, but it makes CJ-for-Simmons more palatable now]

(and is this the place where I ask why an armchair forum poster can't be smarter at the NBA than a real-life GM?)

But could you have signed Evan Turner to that ridiculous amount of money when no one else was CLOSE to offering that much?

And I’d swap Kanter for Nurkic in that Starting lineup

BRIAN! Long time, how the hell have you been?

I could not. But I would've known I had to clear cap space before offering it. Or lying and saying that I sent it to the League Office :)

Been Swamped, still swamped, still miss most of you clowns. Couldn't let today pass without a drive-by. Back to your originally scheduled programming...

Trail Blazers fans will love this stat about sharpshooter Norman Powell (yahoo.com)< The title should be "Thank You Gary Trent", "Thank You Rodney Hood".
The Raptors got two good players too.
From the Powell perspective>< It's a good trade because he is consistent, plays D and is a focused team player. Besides all that, we have another roster opening. Don't blame him on being small. Dame & CJ are in the same height range. He may be that factor in close 4 to 6 point games when it's under a minute to play when we need a sharpshooter or defensive asset.

Stotts will cure Powell of that playing D problem.

For the month of March, Little was already averaging 18-22 minutes per game before the Hood trade.
So I am not sure if Neil really forced Terry's hand here.

.... Portland is better and Powell is actually worth a large-ish extension, unlike Trent. I don't know if Portland actually will offer one, but it's still a better situation. Portland is now at no risk of getting Crabbed again.

I'm sure nobody wants to get crabs again.
