You do know that a 300% increase is a quadruple, not a triple, right? Without checking, I bet you screwed that up.

June 5 article.

Amid a dicey cleanup infiltrated by organized crime, still more massive radiation releases are a real possibility at any time. Radioactive groundwater washing through the complex is enough of a problem that Fukushima Daiichi owner Tepco has just won approval for a highly controversial ice wall to be constructed around the crippled reactor site. No wall of this scale and type has ever been built, and this one might not be ready for two years. Widespread skepticism has erupted...Meanwhile, children nearby are dying. The rate of thyroid cancers among some 250,000 area young people is more than 40 times normal...700 workers fled the Fukushima Daiichi site at the peak of the accident. Just a handful of personnel were left to deal with the crisis, including the plant manager, who soon thereafter died of cancer…

Fukushima’s General Electric reactors feature spent fuel pools perched roughly 100 feet in the air. When the tsunami hit, thousands of rods were suspended over Units 1, 2, 3 and 4...beginning in November 2013, Tokyo Electric Power removed about half of the suspended rods there. But at least three assemblies may be stuck. The more difficult half of the pile remains. And the pools at three other units remain problematic. An accident at any one of them could result in significant radiation releases, which have already far exceeded those from Chernobyl and from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At least 300 tons of heavily contaminated Fukushima water still pour daily into the Pacific. Hundreds more tons are backed up on site, with Tepco apologists advocating they be dumped directly into the ocean without decontamination…

The U.S. industry has also suffered a huge blow at New Mexico’s Waste Isolation Pilot Project. Primarily a military dump, this showcase radioactive waste facility was meant to prove that the industry could handle its trash. No expense was spared in setting it up in the salt caverns of the desert southwest, officially deemed the perfect spot to dump the 70,000 tons of high-level fuel rods now backed up at American reactor sites. But an explosion and highly significant radiation release at the pilot project last month has contaminated local residents and cast a deep cloud over any future plans to dispose of American reactor waste.

Cool. An underground ice wall, going down 10 stories. Let's hope it never melts, not even an inch down there. We don't want loose water way underground creating an unknown, unreachable radioactive stream. Nothing can go wrong. This will make it better, not worse. Neat pictures.

The author of the article:

James Conca

I have been a scientist in the field of the earth and environmental sciences for 31 years, specializing in geologic disposal of nuclear waste, energy-related research, subsurface transport and environmental clean-up of heavy metals.

...

Prior to my present position as Senior Scientist at UFA Ventures, Inc.. I was Director of the Center for Laboratory Sciences on the Campus of CBC, and Director of the WSCF at the Hanford Site. Before that, I was Director of the New Mexico State University Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center, the independent and academic monitoring facility for the Department of Energy's WIPP site, a little-known deep geologic nuclear repository for bomb waste. I came to NMSU from Los Alamos National Laboratory where I was Project Leader for Radionuclide Geochemistry and oversaw data input into the Yucca Mt Project license application. Before that, I was on the faculty at Washington State University Tri-Cities. At the California Institute of Technology, I obtained a Ph.D. in Geochemistry in 1985 and a Masters in Planetary Science in 1981, and received a Bachelor's in Science in Geology/Biology from Brown University in 1979.

Dude hasn't been to school for 30 years, so pretty much anything he learned was propoganda and has since been disproved. His livelihood depends completely on being allowed to hide industrial and nuclear waste.

So I'm going to say he's about the least credible source anyone could possibly find.

On top of that he is so incompetent that his website isn't even functioning.

From my post a few hours ago.

The rate of thyroid cancers among some 250,000 area young people is more than 40 times normal...Just a handful of personnel were left to deal with the crisis, including the plant manager, who soon thereafter died of cancer…

Kids and adults either have died or will soon. For about the next 10,000 years.

NaturalNews (formerly Newstarget) is a website operated by Mike Adams. It is dedicated to alternative medicine and various conspiracy theories,[2] such as "chemtrails",[3] the alleged dangers of fluoride in drinking water,[4] (as well as those of monosodium glutamate[5] and aspartame) and alleged health problems caused by "toxic" ingredients in vaccines,[6] including the now-discredited link to autism.[7]

It features guest authors such as anti-vaccinationist Joseph Mercola, and anti-vaccinationist and conspiracy theorist Jon Rappoport, and has featured interviews with Russell Blaylock, Sandor Katz, and others.

But June 17 the New York Times noted: “Inside the complex, there are three wrecked reactor cores, twisted masses of hundreds of tons of highly radioactive uranium, plutonium, cesium and strontium. After the meltdown, which followed a tsunami and earthquake in 2011, most of the material in the reactors re-solidified, in difficult shapes and in confined spaces, wrapped around and through the structural parts of the reactors and the buildings. Or at least, that is what the engineers think. Nobody really knows, because nobody has yet examined many of the most important parts of the wreckage. Though three and a half years have passed, it is still too dangerous to climb inside for a look, and sending in a camera would risk more leaks.”

...The wrecked reactors spewed enormous, unprecedented volumes of radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean where cesium levels near Fukushima ballooned to an astonishing 50 million times pre-disaster levels (and continue to do so, 3.5 years after it began).

That article is against Scott Walker, so I don't know why you cited it (even in the right thread). I got into Counterpunch looking for material for the Scott Walker thread after I wrote that I'd use a more biased site, but found little and then went to the World Socialist League or whatever it's called. Meanwhile, I found a new Fukushima article in Counterpunch and posted it above.

I'm not for Scott Walker. I'm for the will of the voter.

I think he's on the right side of the government union issue, but not so much on many of the other positions I've seen him take.

The article is fair. Unlike the one in the opening post.

Fish caught off the coast of Oregon have tested positive for radiation and the researchers that discovered this say Fukushima is to blame. An Oregon State University (OSU) research project found that radiation in albacore tuna has been steadily increasing ever since the nuclear disaster back in 2011, with average radiation levels now triple what they were before the consecutive meltdowns.

A team led by graduate research assistant Delvan Neville first began collecting tuna samples back in 2011 and ever since, has been collecting more to make comparisons. Based on what they observed, levels of radioactive cesium in the fish have increased by roughly 300 percent since the project first began, a direct result of radioactive bioaccumulation in the fish over time.

"You can't say there is absolutely zero risk because any radiation is assumed to carry at least some small risk," admitted Neville, who works in the OSU Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics.

Neville insists that the levels detected in the fish are so small that a person receives more exposure from other normal activities like sleeping next to another person, for instance, as humans emit radiation from the natural potassium-40 inside their bodies. But once again, this assumption fails to take into account the effects of concentrated doses of ingested ionizing radiation, which can have profound health effects.

According to the researchers, radiation was detected in all areas of the tuna's bodies, including in the loins, carcass and guts. Older fish were also determined to have higher levels of the damaging radionuclides than younger fish, suggesting that the older fish may have traveled across the Pacific Ocean and back several times, each time exposing themselves to more radiation.

Radioactive water from Fukushima will be 10 times stronger when it reaches US, say scientists
At the same time, other scientists are worried about the continued drift of radioactive water coming from Fukushima, some of which is expected to impact the West Coast. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the GEOMAR Research Center for Marine Geosciences warned earlier this year that when radioactive currents finally reach our shores, it will not be pretty.

A study published recently in the journal Science China Earth Sciences predicts that "pockets and streams of highly concentrated radiation" will soon hit the West Coast, covering the entire North Pacific and stretching as far south as Baja, California, in Mexico. This same study also anticipates that these elevated radiation levels will persist for at least a decade.
