Pretty sure Californians are a big chunk of the visitors. Your solution would cost more than the smoking ban.

that was one of the biggest flaws in McCall's famous slogan. Basically, "fuck you california. we want your money, but don't ever move here". my response would be "you know what? Washington looks like they want my tourist money"

It never did.

Obama's big mouth cost them conventions and a lot of visitors.

Nah. Las Vegas had lots of people before the Californians came and speculated the real estate market into the ground. One example of their change to the city was a ballot initiative to ban smoking in bars and restaurants. No way the casinos would let their business be killed over that social agenda.

Smoking Ban Costs Las Vegas Airport Millions
(Obama and his big mouth cost Vegas $billions)

It never did.

You don't know that Obama is a smoker?
That's how the thin guy has a deep voice.

his big mouth regarding what?

(Steve Wynn is one of the good guys. He was an Obama supporter, even. His company is well known in the area for taking care of its employees. He's invested and attracted $billions into the city at all levels.)

Sure it did. Because convention planners are skittish like that. One stray comment from the president, and they just cancel the convention.

Obama said:
You don’t blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.

So your position, Denny, is that people should blow a bunch of cash in Vegas instead of saving for college? And that people used to do exactly that, but stopped when the President told them not to?

I seriously don't get what the issue is. This is trumped up crap like the "cracks about the Devastating Texas fires" bullshit. Why do people seem to make up issues?

Smoking allowed in public places never kept Californians from going to Las Vegas.

It's not one stray comment from the president, it's the president who takes over companies, fires the board of directors, fires the CEO, and threatens executives everywhere not to spend money in Vegas.

Vegas is one of the premier convention hosting locations in the country. It has a number of convention halls and a lot of hotel rooms, plus the entertainment.

Wow. You have TWO democrats and Obama supporters in those links furious with the president for damaging the city's (and state's) tourism business.

Oh come on, quit being hyperbolic.

do you honestly feel that a comment telling people not to spend their savings on gambling really made a sizeable dent on the Las Vegas economy?

People look for all sorts of reasons to complain about stuff. I'm going out of business because XYZ happens (instead of admitting you were a poor businessman or that your business plan sucked).

He said to not waste money earmarked for other things. Oooh the bastard.

Again, the Democrats in two of those links who were strong Obama supporters don't agree with you.

Even Harry Reid took offense:

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politi.../Obama-slams-Las-Vegas-again-Reid-upset-again

Regardless, embattled Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took offense.

"The President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money," Reid said in a statement. "I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas.

Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley concurred with Reid although to illustrate her level of ire, she threw in an exclamation point.

"Enough is enough!" Berkeley said in a statement. "President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars."

What's surprising is that the Vegas line made it in his speech again. Perhaps it was a different set of speechwriters this year. Or perhaps they just didn't recall the firestorm from last year.

gee, people who live in Las Vegas taking umbridge with a trumped up outrage over a "slight" against people wasting money in their state.

Wow. Burn the summabish!

Because they feel inadequate debating genuine issues that have serious consequences.

It's the Republican Outrage of the Day. They'll commit suicide if they can't walk around angry.

By the way, this guy Oscar Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas whom Denny loves, was the famous lawyer for all the Mafia bigwigs before becoming Mayor.

You mean, like how in Ohio and Oregon it's not the President's policies that cause restaurants to close, but a smoking ban (post 9)...but in Vegas, it's neither a smoking ban nor the President's comments or policies?

Or how we need to stop using nuclear power and fossil fuels b/c of all the "millions killed" by radioactive zoomies and global warming, but ingesting secondhand smoke isn't a "serious consequence."

Hard to adequately debate against someone who won't take a consistent position. :dunno:
