President Obama today released his 2011 federal income tax, with he and his wife reporting an adjusted gross income of $789,674. The Obamas paid $162,074 in total tax – an effective federal income tax rate of 20.5%. The Obamas also reported donating approximately 22% of their income to charity — $172,130.

President Obama has been making a big political push for the “Buffett Rule,” which would require millionaires to pay a minimum of 30% of their income in taxes. To illustrate the point, the president has pointed out that billionaire investor Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than does his secretary.

President Obama’s secretary, Anita Decker Breckenridge, makes $95,000 a year. White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage tells ABC News that Breckenridge “pays a slightly higher rate this year on her substantially lower income, which is exactly why we need to reform our tax code and ask the wealthiest to pay their fair share. ”

It should be noted that president would not be impacted by the Buffett Rule, though he would see his taxes go up if the so-called Bush tax cuts on higher income wage-earners were allowed to expire, as the president says he wants.

Other than, LOL, the only other obvious response is that he's upped the "rich are those who make $250K or more" to $1M or more so it wouldn't apply to him.

LOL

LOL

Buffett is the one who came up with the $1m figure, but then you knew that.

By constantly battling to end the Bush taxgifttotheuberwealthy, Obama walks the walk.

Meanwhile Republicans merely talk the talk.

And a flat tax takes care of this for everyone.

You make more money, you pay more taxes. Period.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

How about the "Buffet's Secretary Rule?" That we might cut her tax rate to below Buffet's doesn't occur to the guy who wants to leach our wallets.

This thread is a statement against Republican tax policy, and confirms that liberals are right--the rich don't pay enough taxes.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

six figures as a secretary? i doubt she's complaining

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

What a fucking idiot. He has his life subsidized right now and he's going to make tens of millions of dollars when he leaves office. It's an election year. Why wouldn't he just take what he made and pay 30% or 40% on the gross amount in taxes. It would cost him perhaps an extra $100-200K, but you couldn't buy the goodwill and positive advertising he'd receive for overpaying his taxes. He then grabs the moral high ground. Instead, he's just another limosuine liberal hypocrite.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

This thread is a statement about how a hypocrite whines about someone else paying less than his secretary while he is paying less than his.

The Moonie paper is being funny! Did the South Korean Buddhists in the pointed hats give the Editor his orders? Looks like the Reverend Sun Myung Moon is getting daffy in his old age. Maybe he'll make the paper Confucianist.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

Since when is the Washington Post a "moonie" paper?

Like if he say, donated 100k to charities?

Donating to charity means you believe the charity is better suited to doing welfare than the govt. is.

LOL

Not really. First of all, lots of charities don't have anything to do with welfare. Secondly, it's not possible so far as I know to donate to the federal government and earmark your donation to a specific program or cause (although I suppose if you were talking billions something could probably be arranged). Thirdly, one might choose to donate to a welfare charity because it specializes in a particular area or population group or problem - you can't direct government money that way.

So we agree that govt sucks.

No, we just agree it isn't a private charity.

Then maybe we agree that paying taxes isn't so good because you can't direct your money like you want to with a charitable donation. All those billionaires are forming charities instead of giving their money to the govt. because they don't want the govt. spending it.

Progressives seem to think govt. is the solution to all society's problems. If it is, then no point in donating to charity. Hence hypocrites.

Govt. is a charity for govt. employees.

Did you know that something like 15 of the 16 richest neighborhoods directly surround D.C.?

That's your tax money going from Portland (or wherever) to D.C. and not making it back in any reasonable fashion. That sucking sound is too much money making its way to D.C. for good.

And a bulk of the states that receive more money than they pay in taxes are republican states. What's your point?

The better question is, "what is YOUR point?"

It's simply different. You could also say that for-profit companies aren't so good, because you can't tell AT&T how to spend the revenue from your cell phone bill.

Strawman alert!

If it is, then no point in donating to charity. Hence hypocrites.

And if it isn't, then you've constructed your conclusion based on a faulty premise.

Govt. is a charity for govt. employees.

Did you know that something like 15 of the 16 richest neighborhoods directly surround D.C.?

And you want me to believe those neighborhoods are populated by government employees as opposed to lobbyists and corporate employees and the like?

That's your tax money going from Portland (or wherever) to D.C. and not making it back in any reasonable fashion. That sucking sound is too much money making its way to D.C. for good.

If only government employees were paid less, all our problems would be solved! What fraction of the total federal budget is for salaries again?

You don't have to buy a thing from AT&T nor give them $.01. Not true of government.

There's no strawman. You seem to want Obama to have their money to spend.

If someone believes govt. is the cure to all ills but goes out of their way to see their money go elsewhere, they're a hypocrite.

Govt. employees' pay is a strawman. I'm fine with them being well paid, just there shouldn't be many of them to be well paid.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

It is clear that Obama should have done joint tax planning with his secretary. By comparing budgeted tax returns before Dec. 31, she could have, just in time for the holidays, refunded thousands of her own salary to him, decreasing her income while increasing his, so that his tax rate would exceed hers. Then Republicans would not have been forced to suffer this emergency outrage.

Or maybe Obama should just shut up about the inequity of the tax code.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

Or maybe Obama should just shut up about the inequity of the tax code.

Have you ever considered that he did this on purpose to demonstrate that what he's been saying is true?

If Romney mentions this in speeches, he will only prove Obama right. So he won't.

Why should Obama shut up when he just finished proving himself right?

Has it ever occurred to you that Obama paid 3x or 4x what his secretary did?

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

Of course. But your complaint is about rate, not amount.

Re: President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Didhttp://abcnews.go.com

Whoa, so AT&T is not the government? My mind is blown.

There's no strawman. You seem to want Obama to have their money to spend.

If someone believes govt. is the cure to all ills

There's the strawman, right there. No one believes that.
