I don't really get the point.

The first presidential debate will be held on Tuesday, September 29 at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. The format for the first debate calls for six 15-minute time segments dedicated to topics announced in advance in order to encourage deep discussion of the leading issues facing the country.

Chris Wallace, moderator of the first 2020 presidential debate, has selected the topics for that debate.

Subject to possible changes because of news developments, the topics for the September 29 debate are as follows, not necessarily to be brought up in this order:

The Trump and Biden Records

The Supreme Court

Covid-19

The Economy

Race and Violence in our Cities

The Integrity of the Election

All debates start at 9:00 p.m. ET and run for 90 minutes without commercial interruption.

First question for Donald Trump: "Mr. President, given the total lack of compassion and morality that you have shown during your first term, and given the multiple times you have put what's best for Donald Trump ahead of what's best for the country, what on earth makes you think the people of this country should reelect you?

First question for Joe Biden: "Mr. Vice President, Train A leaves Pittsburgh at 10:30 am travelling towards Baltimore at an average of 61 MPH. Train B Leaves Baltimore at 9:45 am travelling towards Pittsburgh an average of 59 MPH. At what point should someone at your age retire?

Of something other than teleprompted recorded speeches?
Trump can go up and shit on the stage and say this is what I think of my base, and he'd maybe lose 6 votes, but gain thousands for telling it like it is.
Yeah, I dont see the purpose of the debates at this point.

There has to be debates for this office. I want to see Joe clean his clock, but I also want to see him convey his plan and policy.

You have one guy who lies 99% of the time, and the other guy who struggles to keep up with all of them while responding.

What's the point? If you don't know who you're voting for at this stage, these debates won't help.

I'll be surprised if Biden can string two sentences together without forgetting what he's talking about or where he is.

Why, though? Is it just for entertainment's sake? I can think of many things more entertaining than 2 old ass white dudes talking over and insulting eachother. Is it to learn where they stand on something? I gotta imagine it's pretty easy to find all of that online. Is it to see how presidential they seem? Well....
I don't know what purpose they honestly serve. Like @illmatic99 said, if you don't know by now, what is gonna happen in the debates to help you along?

Im sure Hillary & Romney would both agree once the nation found out how they really felt about some demographics.
Not everyone watches TV all day or spends all day on the computer with political stuff. The debates give many the opportunity to see how the candidates feel about major issues. Plus there are many undecided's that will use the debates as a spring board in selecting a candidate. Trump will piss the American people off to the max with his low blows and Joe needs to be calm and focused on what he wants to say. he needs to be careful about not getting to radical with the police issue, green new deal, & energy.

Yes, I think people who pay attention to politics and the news often forget how many people don't pay attention at all. Debates are an easy way for these people to cram right before the test. Of course, many won't even watch it either.

If I was Biden, I would let Trumps body of work speak for itself and not even show up.
I have thought about that. What if Biden shows up and his first 15 mins just says "I will not give this Clown a platform" then plays a 14 minute video of all his stupid remarks and issues. Then for every 15 minute section simply plays it again and again. Even better he could probably come up with 14 minutes of idiocy for every subject.
