Was watching last night's courtside and Barrett said he talked to Przbyilla last week and that Przy said he's a month and a half ahead of schedule and is on track to starting running in April.

Good news. Sounds like he'll be ready to go by training camp.

Mike has guy love for Joel. Joel could have his leg amputated and Barrett would report that Joel has lost weight and will be quicker when he returns.

The bottom line is that injury is very difficult to come back from, especially at Joel's age. I don't expect him to be the same player when he returns. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm kind of on board with this... They know the players hear what they say and they sometimes make statements accordingly.

We need to be hoping for the best, planning for the worst in this case,

I think he'll be fine. Joel never depended on superior athletic gifts anyway. He's a hard worker with great length and he's very active. As long as he doesn't have too much pain I think he will be back to the same old Joel.

While you're right about Barrett being an obvious homer, I certainly don't see Barrett as someone who would spread false information just to get hopes up. Rice maybe, but not Barrett. He either reports the positive or doesn't say anything at all, and this is a positive.

You can come back from them, it's just key to make sure you don't re-aggravate it, which is what Antonio McDyess did.

My pessimism with Joel's injury is that it's one that will affect his jumping. Joel was never a skywalker, but he was a pretty quick leaper. Shotblocking is about timing. Joel is probably going to come back just a bit slower. That little bit could be the difference between blocking a shot and fouling someone.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong and he comes back 100%. I'm a big fan of Przy's.

I hope you're right. Joel's game really was based more on height, strength and timing over speed.

At worst, he'll basically be Arvydas Sabonis without any offense. (Kind of hard to imagine, I know.) Which ain't great, but is still serviceable in a backup center.

If he can deliver 6 hard fouls and twelve minutes of breather for Oden, it'll be enough. If (and it's a big damned "if") Oden can stay on the floor.

I concur and would like to add that MB attributed his news to Joel directly. It is not MB's oppinion, it is MB reporting what Joel told him. MB's man love for Joel plays no part in this report. I see this good news for Joel as bad news for Mixum.

Barrett also reported that Joel said if the Blazers got to round 2 he could maybe get in there, but that's probably unrealistic to say the least.

Again, just Barrett reporting what Przy told him, and he said Przy was dead serious.

someone should tell barrett we are in the 8th seed.

hmm maybe joel opts out of the last year

I wish Joel the best and I'd love to see him return to full strength in time for next season's training camp, but with the organization's track record of over estimating recovery timelines, and under estimating injury severity, I would say 'wait and see' especially when the team's resident sunshine pumper MB is the one spreading the news.

You'll have to pardon my lack of enthusiasm.

Glad to hear he's doing well. Obviously, we all take a wait and see on these things, but given Joel's work ethic, I'm not surprised that he's ahead of schedule.

Ouch . . . this team's medical staff has lost a lot of crediblity with fans. And the fact Roy went to get an second medical opinion might speak as to how much crediblity players are giving the staff these days.

Blake Griffin was ahead of schedule too until he actually had to do a workout outside of a pool.

So which players have had this injury before that had a hard time coming back from it?

I have seen other posters state that he would never play again. I am totally clueless on why this would even be a question. what is this based on?

Antonio McDyess for one, and it ended Damon's career.

Misinformation and a consistent pessimistic attitude, IMHO.

I don't know...I think there's legit concern on a lot of folks part given this list:
(from http://mobile.blazersedge.com/2009/12/8/1190861/patella-injuries-in-nba-history)

Torn or partially torn patellar tendon: A much more severe injury.

SF Cedric Ceballos, 1996-97, age 27, Lakers/Suns

Partial tear of the right patellar tendon in November 1996, expected to be out 2 months. He got reactivated in January, but it continued to bother him throughout the season missing several more games with a strained patella in March after a trade to the Suns. He continued to have s ome problems with his right knee (meniscus) and especially his wrists over the following years. Some drop in production, though he did have another strong season with the Mavericks in 1999-00.

PF Antonio McDyess, 2001-2003, age 27-29, Nuggets: Several fractures and tears

Subluxated left patella in March 2001 (partial/incomplete dislocation). Missed remainder of the season.

Initially there was no surgery, then in October 2001 he required surgery to repair what was then diagnosed as a partially torn patellar tendon. In addition he needed arthroscopic surgery on the right knee to clean out some loose debris and was expected to be out 3-4 months. In March 2002 he briefly got activated, but was deactivated quickly again when both knees got inflamed.

Next season: Joining the Knicks that offseason, he was immediately placed on the injured list with a "left knee inflammation", and then in October required another surgery to repair a fracture to the left patella. In April 2003 he needed yet another surgery on the left knee patella missing the entire 2002-03 season.

When finally returning to action, he played in 42 games in 2003-04 season. Then continued to play several seasons completely or close to. His statistics dropped significantly across the board before going up slightly again but never back to previous state. However as of now he is still active as a rotation player.

SF Glen Rice, 2001-02, age 34, Rockets

Partial tear in December required surgery on right knee a month later, out for the remainder of the season.

Next season: Appeared in 62 games, but he continued to have some problems with the right knee (strain, hyperextension, bruise). His stats dropped slightly, and at age 36 he was reaching his career end the following season where he appeared in his last 18 games.

PG Damon Stoudemire, 2005-06, age 32, Grizzlies

Surgery on torn right patellar tendon in January 2006 after injuring it just before the end of the year, out for remainder of the season.

He already had suffered from what was deemed 'left knee tendinitis' a decade earlier when on the Raptors missing the end of the 1995-96 season without going into detail which tendon. While with the Blazers he missed much of November with 2001 right knee tendinitis.

Next season: Played in 62 games. Stats dropped to level from a few years earlier while about maintaining efficiency. Career end after 2007-08 season where he played in another 60 games.

C Alonzo Mourning, 2007, age 37, Heat

Surgery on right knee to repair torn patellar tendon after 25 games, out for remainder of the season.

Update: He had already sustained a partial tear in the left knee in 1997 pausing for ca. 3 months (initial diagnosis was 8 to 12 weeks), and missed a few games in December 2004 with 'right knee tendinitis'.

Next season: Ended career

SG Kelenna Azubuike, 2009, age 26, Warriors

Torn patellar tendon in left knee after having appeared
in 9 games, out for the season. In the video of the injury it looked like someone had beaten him out of mid-air with a bat when he tried to go up on a drive to the basket.

thats a possibility. Of course being 30 and coming off a severe injury don't usually make a FA's price go up. The 7.4M he could receive by not opting out would be the largest payday of his career... hmmm

anyhoo, I guess this sticks a fork in your "LOLz at posters who think he'll play before Christmas 2010" posts eh?

in a new fiscal year where the cap is going to drop significantly and the max contracts will go down the same... I doubt Joel will want to try to get more money from another team, and I doubt it would be possible even if he were healthy. And since he is damaged goods... I think he plays it safe and stays with us for the money already virtually guarenteed by just taking it.

I want to hear that Greg is ahead of schedule. But than again, I want to hear that Greg is immune to injuries too.
