The Lakers are still young and I see them being the team in the Finals for the West for the next few years.

kobe, gasol, odom and fisher are not "young." sure their window is open for a couple more years but the wear and tear is going to catch up to kobe, then it's downhill for them.

The Kobe/Gasol/Bynum nucleous is going to be a force to reckon with for at least 5 years.

Actually, that's not true. Kobe is 30 and Gasol is 28. Who cares about Odom and Fisher? They are interchangable parts.

I know, I know . . . Kobe is an "old" 30 in that he has a lot of milleage - been playing 82 reg season for 13 years plus all of the playoff battles. Well, he doesn't look like he's lost anything to me. Wishful thinking. I'd love for that guys knees to explode![]()
Gasol has been the most consistent player on the Lakers this year, Bynum will have more years experience, Kobe already has cut down on slashing to the basket, he has a killer jumper, he will adapt

ok then, let's call a spade a spade and throw out bynum and gasol as well cause kobe is the one that makes that team go. i think it's safe to say without him that team is a shadow of itself. looking at kobe and his #'s, he's nearing that 1200 game plateu where many players start to see that downhill slide. will he be the same? i don't know but odds are he is at his peak now. sure he's got at least 2-3 years of decent play left in him but check back in 2011 and i think you'll be watching a different kobe.
He may adapt, but he won't be the same player in three years as he is now, and his performance is already declining gradually. He's still one of the best players in the game, but his scoring is down for the third consecutive year and the lowest since 2003-04.
He has a better supporting cast than at anytime post-Shaq, but as his individual dominance fades, he will need to depend on them more and more. He's not going to start sucking any time soon, but he will decline.
BNM
you guys are so black and white about things. these two teams will be making a run for the finals for years to come, portland has a great core of young guys, who are great players, the lakers have bynum, another great young player, along with ariza, farmar, powell. could bynum be great? sure, will he? we don't know, but the rest of the players you listed are nice role players but nothing special.lakers also have kobe and pau, two extraordinary players, who arent going to fade anytime soon.you can keep telling yourself that kobe will play like this til he's 50, doesn't mean it will come true. he's going to decline, facts are facts. jut because kobe is scoring less, doesnt mean he has declined, if you truly beleive that then you havent learned enough about nba basketball, look at the game, not the stats. look at how jordan transformed his game, at a young age he was a highflying acrobatic scorer, later in his career, he began to defeat opponents with his knowledge of the game, he outsmarted players, making it possible to score just as well with jumpshots rather then penitrating the lane. he also became a better playmaker, and used all of his knowledge of the game, and of life to find a way for hi team to win. thats why he's the greatest, he adjusted to every obstacle in his path. wholeheartedly agree with this, but then the question is, did Jordan/Kobe begin doing this because they realized they couldn't dominate for 82 games plus the playoffs anymore. with age comes maturity but also dimnishing physical tools.
kobe is so blatantly using this same 'technique' in his career, look at how much he has matured in the lat few years, he's not a kid anymore, and he is so widely respected all around the league, even lebron looks up to him. he is doing what jordan did, he has always been a student of the game, but now he's watching even more game tape, using strategie much more effectively, he is one of the smartest players in the game. he doesnt need to be the high flying, 30 points per game guy he has been his whole career, even though he is still 3rd in points per 48 minutes. and look at his defense, fantastic as always, maybe even better. kobe looks ahead of himself, he sees what difficulties lay before him and he works his way around them. plus he is like the biggest health nut, the way he has looked after himself (well maybe not his hands, lol) as of late is astounding, he is so immensly fit, this isnt any other 30 Y/O bball player man.
anyway, what about the hornets? the hornets are good but i don't see them as a GREAT team, but a great player who makes everyone around them better.you know theyre gonna be around for a while. you cant say that portlaand are going to be the bees knees because PTI said soi don't think anyone here thinks that because Mike Wilbon said it then it is fact., what the hell do they know anywayi'd say wilbon is pretty knowledable when it comes to the NBA. he doesn't get everything right but he's better than most and seems to be a student of the game unlike many commentators who say things to get attention.. saying something like that is completely ignorant and really arrogant, and that isnt going to get your team any further. chill out man, nothing anyone says here is going to do the team any good or harm, it's fans discussing.the way i see it, the lakers are going to be just as good, if not better, by the time portland come around, just look at how bostons toughness and experience earned us a loss in the finals. it will be the same story, book it! all you have to do is look at the history man, and you'll find your answer.
