Bill Russell made it yet Walton didn't?!?

It's not like the Blazer team plane just wasn't in LA last night.

Walton's health has been pretty bad in recent years. If he couldn't make it, I'd guess he had a pretty good reason.

Well that was extremely well done - a fitting memorial service to a great Portlander.

Jeez that was sad.

David Lucas speaking and his brother crying was heart breaking.

I have pretty thick skin but this was tough. Especially when his son was talking about Luke's last days.

Huge props to Schonz and the Blazers!

Very well done.

Touching.

Thank you!

Probably up until 3-4mos ago Lucas would have made Walton's memorial.

I'm very disappointed in Bill Walton.

How can you say that without knowing why Bill didn't make it? He might have made it to the private memorial which might have been more important to him. Who knows? Easy to be critical without knowing.

This was a public memorial for the fans. There was already a private one. Guys like Johnny Davis and Lionel Hollins came up for it. Not sure if Walton did.

He was healthy enough

"Twenty years ago there was no way I would have ever said this, but I am a better and happier person because of what happened to me and what I had to go through," Walton says. "When you have been where I have been, when you have nothing and then you get better, things are never the same again."

Walton's recovery also has enabled him to return to broadcasting, as an analyst for some Sacramento Kings and Boston Celtics games. He left TNT two years ago because of his pains, but says, "I haven't been this healthy in 36 years."

personally I don't think he was probably mentally strong enough to go. that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Walton has crapped on this city and franchise before.

Lucas has not.

Walton should have been sitting next to Luke's family or Bill Russell.

I hope he does have a good excuse, I would like nothing more than to apologize for speaking harshly.

Walton just seems like an extremely emotional guy. going to a public memorial like this, he probably would have been expected to go up and talk and I think he would have been reduced to a vat of jelly.

First, I am so filled with emotion after attending the public memorial. The vibe was one of chills for most of the 2 1/2 hours.

Second, can we please not bitch about Bill Walton in this thread? I find it very rude and unnecessary.

Anyone know if they're going to offer it as a download?

My mother was one of 4 sisters, and the sister to whom she was closest was unable to fly cross country to her funeral.

Let's leave trashing Walton, fans, Roy, Nate, and anyone else out of this thread, you know, just for once, OK?

I'm glad some of us were able to attend.

The whole memorial service was well-done and kudos to the Blazers for putting it on for the public and those close to Coach Luke. O-Live has all of the speeches in full form. IMO, Brickowski and David Lucas were must-listen to, and seeing Dr. Jack back in town here is always special.

Really sad I missed this. My dad was a HUGE Lucas fan and while I'm not old enough to remember the championship (though I was a toddler at the time) my dad would constantly talk about Luke. I hope my dad is watching Maurice throw elbows in heaven. RIP Luke.

When they first announced Brickowski at the memorial I was like WTF?!? But he was great! Funny! Heart warming. Just a great guy.

David Lucas' address with gut wrenching. When his brother started crying it was almost too much to take.
