OT Question about Whiteside

I guess I'm in the minority, because I'm not on the Whiteside bandwagon. He can block shots, but I don't think he's the savior some people seem to.

We threw serious $$$ to Kanter and to Monroe. Serious Question: How does a young Whiteside compare to those in your estimation?

Excellent question. My unscientific opinion is, I didn't want Kanter for what the Blazers offered, and was relieved he stayed with OKC. I was disappointed we didn't get Monroe, because I thought adding Monroe to the core of our playoff team would have been great. I guess it's a matter of how much he costs. I wouldn't break the bank for him, that's all. He could be a piece, but I think we need more pieces than just Whiteside to make a big splash.

I'd rather sign Horford and Pau Gasol this summer. Then we'd be contenders.

Gasol's best years are pretty much behind him I think regardless of the fact he is having a good year this year. He is too old to fit the mold of this team. Horford and Paul George? Horfords an UFA next year right? Sign him and trade for George.

Harkless/Kaman/Plums(or Davis), cash and 2018 pick for George?

Whitesides defense is so overrated. It's block or bust for him at the rim. He doesn't make players alter shots, and this is represented by his high Opp FG% at the rim. Another thing is usually blocked shots go out of bounds, where altered shots usually result in a defensive rebound. Essentially what I'm saying its people overrate him because of his block numbers.
I haven't seen him play enough to validate this opinion, but I will say that the reasoning behind the opinion is solid and I agree with it. The name Javale McGee springs to mind. Blocked shots are crowd-pleasing, but they do not represent good defense - many times they're a result of being late to the play or out of position.

And how many times have we seen guys so focused on trying to get blocks they leave their man open for a layup, either off a pass or rebound. Not saying this is happening with Whiteside, because I don't watch the Heat much, just a general observation to support the idea that blocked shots do not necessarily mean effective defense.

I will give this rook the benefit of the doubt because he is a vet like myself........ THAT SAID, going to take A LOT more then Whiteside to boost us to contender level.
I'm a vet...how did I lose out?

Whiteside just might be the next Ruben Patterson or mature into a guy of high character....sometimes being in a healthy culture can change a guy...some of these guys will never change..I haven't seen enough of him to evaluate his game. Seems he's fallen out of favor with the coach in Miami and it makes no sense at his price tag that they would move him...if ever a team needed a big guy...it's Miami so that raises a flag for me

Lol that was a good one, not even gonna lie.

Jokes on you though... PlayStation warrior!
dude...you're talking to a guy who's never even had a cell phone..I'm about as low tech as you can get..now my son on the other hand is a master thumb twiddler but I'll give him credit...he traded his Xbox straight across for a Martin guitar..made me proud!

I did try that Pong game when computers first came around

Whiteside has some concerns/flags, but they come with mega upside.

Two other center prospects that NO tried to sign also have concerns/flags, and they didn't have near the upside. Whiteside probably has less flags than the other two dudes.

So a computer is not even tech anymore?! :MARIS61:

Whiteside is having a pretty good game against San Antonio on TNT. Aldridge is having a pretty good game too.
Defensively, whiteside has done well. But it took him a little to get some offense (12 points at the half).
Aldridge did draw 2 fouls on him. But hate aside, Aldridge is legit so I can live with that if I'm Miami.
Right before the 1st half ended, spoelstra took whiteside out for another shooter. Wade turned it over. Spurs got last possession, and Aldridge had the easiest basket of the night. Should be a good 2nd half!

I don't know how good he is on defense either but I saw the end of a game a few nights ago when he had 10 blocks where the other teams PG wouldn't even go into the lane when he had the opportunity and the clock wound down and the other team took a horrible perimeter shot. So things like that don't go into stats but he was certainly effective in that case.

Just rewound to double check on the substitution. It was for Winslow. So definitely not a shooter.
